A UV-IR combination curing system and method for manufacture and repair of composite parts, such as for use in wind blade manufacture and repair. The system and method utilize UV and IR dual radiation sources to cure glass fiber reinforced laminates containing a photo initiator. The UV and IR dual radiation sources can be configured as discrete stand-alone UV and IR lamps used in a side by side configuration, a plurality of UV lamps with thermal IR radiation, a combined UV/IR lamp, or other forms of light sources providing both UV and IR radiation. To achieve high glass transition and complete curing of thick laminates, the IR radiation source is initially turned on to heat the laminate to close to 40&#xb0; C.-100&#xb0; C. before the UV radiation source is turned on. The IR radiation source can be turned off after UV radiation source is activated.

A resin infusion apparatus and system, layup system comprising the same, and methods of using these are provided. The resin infusion apparatus comprises a hollow cylinder having a plurality of pores perforating an arcuate surface thereof. The interior of the cylinder is provided with one or more flow restrictors that assist in controlling the flow out of the pores of the cylinder. Laminates made of prepregs prepared using the apparatus and/or system may thus be essentially free of voids.

Structural health monitoring using nuclear quadrupole resonance is disclosed. For example, in one embodiment, a method of monitoring stress is provided. The method includes scanning a composite using an NQR spectrometer, the composite having a polymer matrix and a microcrystalline material disposed in the matrix. The microcrystalline material includes molecules having nuclei with respective nuclear quadrupole moments. The method also includes determining microscopic strain distribution indices of the composite from the NQR scans to quantify stress and identify precursors to failure in the composite.

A method of assembling a wind turbine blade comprises providing a first blade segment comprising at least two first spar cap segments; providing a second blade segment comprising at least two second spar cap segments; inserting the second blade segment into the first blade segment wherein a spar cap cavity is formed between each set of corresponding first and second spar cap segments; injecting an adhesive into the spar cap cavities to bond the blade segments together, wherein a scarf joint is formed between each set of corresponding first and second spar cap segments.

Disclosed herein is an assembly for plasma generation comprising a cathode plate comprising a fixed cathode tip, the cathode tip being integral part of the cathode plate. The assembly further comprises at least one cascade plate, at least one separator plate disposed between the cathode plate and the cascade plate, an anode plate, and an inlet for a gas. The cathode plate, separator plate, cascade plate and anode plate are 'electrically isolated' from one another, and the electrically isolated cathode plate, separator plate, and cascade plate define a plasma generation chamber. The cathode tip is disposed within the plasma generation chamber.

Expanded thermal plasma apparatus

A system to coat a substrate includes a deposition chamber maintained at sub-atmospheric pressure, one or more arrays containing two or more expanding thermal plasma sources associated with the deposition chamber, and at least one injector containing orifices for each array. The substrate is positioned in the deposition chamber and each expanding thermal plasma source produces a plasma jet with a central axis, while the injector injects vaporized reagents into the plasma to form a coating that is deposited on the substrate. The injector orifices are located within a specified distance from the expanding thermal plasma source to obtain generally a coating with generally uniform coating properties.

The present invention provides a deposition process for plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition of a coating on a substrate. The process comprises detennining a target process condition within a chamber of an expanding thermal plasma generator; the generator comprising a cathode, a replaceable cascade plate and an anode comprising a concentric orifice; and thereafter replacing the cascade plate with another plate having a configured orifice to effect the identified target process condition. The plasma is then generated at the target process condition by providing a plasma gas to the plasma generator and ionizing the plasma gas in an arc between cathode and anode within the generator and expanding the gas as a plasma onto a substrate in a deposition chamber.

Disclosed are flame retardant resinous compositions comprising (i) at least one aromatic polycarbonate, (ii) at least one a rubber modified graft copolymer, (iii) at least one silyl borate ester, (iv) at least one organophosphorus compound, and (v) at least one fluoropolymer additive. The compositions exhibit improved surface properties in molded parts.

Flame retardant resinous compositions and method

Disclosed are flame retardant resinous compositions comprising (i) at least one aromatic polycarbonate; (ii) at least one of a second polymer having structural units derived from one or more monomers selected from the group consisting of vinyl aromatic monomers, monoethylenically unsaturated nitrile monomers, and C -C alkyl (meth)acrylate monomers; (iii) at least one rubber modified graft copolymer; (iv) at least one polymeric or non-polymeric organic phosphorus species; (v) at least one antidrip agent; and (vi) at least one perfluoroalkanesulfonate salt present in an amount in a range between about 0.01 wt % and about 0.25 wt %, based on the weight of the entire composition. Also disclosed are methods for making said compositions.
