A method of assembling a hand held electrically powered drilling and/or hammering tool having a tool housing and a drilling and/or hammering spindle mounted within the housing. The spindle has a forward end at which a tool or bit may be mounted. The method of assembly includes the steps of making a motor sub-assembly including a motor and a radial fan, the fan has a plurality of blades located on one side of the fan and non-rotatably mounting the fan on an end of the armature shaft of the motor at a first end of the motor with the blades facing away from the armature of the motor. The method further including balancing the motor sub-assembly, and mounting the sub-assembly within the housing, with the longitudinal axis of the motor armature shaft at an angle, preferably perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the spindle and with the first end of the motor closest to the spindle axis. Thus, in use of the tool, the fan rotates at the first end of the motor to draw air into its inlet via air inlets in the housing and so as to push air through the motor and out of air outlets in the housing in the region of the second end of the motor which is remote from the spindle axis. A drilling and/or hammering tool made according to the method is also described.

Method of assembling a drilling and/or hammering tool

A tool holder for a powered hammer includes a tool holder housing. An actuator is coupled to the tool holder housing and is moveable among a range of operating positions that include a first position where the actuator locks a tool within the tool holder by engaging a rib on the tool, a second position where the actuator locks a tool within the tool holder by engaging a recess in the tool, and a third position where the actuator allows a tool to be released from the tool holder. An actuator locking mechanism releasably locks the actuator in at least the third position.

A vibration reduction and lubricating mechanism for a powered hammer includes a power driven piston in a cylinder that reciprocatingly drives a ram, which repetitively strikes a beat piece, which repetitively strikes a tool received in a tool holder. The vibration reduction and lubricating mechanism includes a first chamber defined in a housing of the powered hammer. A second chamber is defined within an end portion of the cylinder facing the beat piece, forward of the ram. A passageway is in communication with the first and second chambers. A counter mass is mounted for oscillating movement within the first chamber. When the hammer is operated, the counter mass is caused to oscillate to counteract vibration in the housing and to cause lubrication fluid to move between the first and second chambers.

A hand held electrically powered drilling and/or hammering tool comprises a balanced motor sub-assembly including a radial fan mounted to the armature shaft at a first end of the motor with the fan blades facing away from the motor, and motor the sub-assembly is mounted with the axis of the motor angled with respect to the axis of the tool spindle and with the first end of the motor closest to the spindle, and an air outlet is located in the housing near a second end of the motor, and the above components are arranged so that rotation of the fan draws air into its inlet via air inlets and then pushes air from its outlet through the motor and out of the air outlets in the region of the second end of the motor which is remote from the spindle axis.

Drilling and/or hammering tool

An electrically powered tool having a dust collection unit powered by a motor, which unit can be releasably fitted to the tool includes a plug arrangement and a cooperating socket arrangement, one of which is formed on the tool and the other of which is formed on the unit. A first mechanical fixing arrangement is provided comprising a first projection and a first cooperating recess, one of which is formed on the tool and the other of which is formed on the unit. A second mechanical fixing arrangement is provided and comprises a manually actuable releasable latch arrangement and a second cooperating recess, one of which is formed on the tool and the other of which is formed on the unit. The first and second mechanical fixing arrangements cooperate to secure the dust collection unit to the tool in such a way that the plug and socket arrangements form an electrical connection.

A rotary hammer which comprises a tool holder (,), an air cushion hammering mechanism which comprises a piston (,) and a beat piece (,) slideably located in a cylinder (,&prime;) so that reciprocation of the piston in the cylinder will cause the beat piece to hit a tool located in the tool holder; and means for causing the cylinder to rotate in addition to, or instead of, reciprocation of the piston in order to cause a tool located in the tool holder to rotate. The piston (,) is formed from a plastics material and is sealed in the cylinder (,&prime;) by an annular seal (,) that is located within an annular groove (,) in the piston. The annular seal has an inner diameter that is greater than the diameter of the radially outwardly directed surface of the groove, and the groove has an axial dimension that is greater than that of the annular seal, so that when the cylinder rotates about the piston (without reciprocation of the piston) the seal (,) will rotate with the cylinder (,&prime;).
