A system for configuration of vehicle applications includes a display and a processor. The processor is programmed to provide, to the display, a user interface including an active application area configured to display an active application, and a dash card area adjacent the application area configured to display one or more dash cards, each dash card representative of a minimized application, responsive to a first selection of a resize control, increase a dimension of the active application area and decrease a dimension of the dash card area, and responsive to a second selection of the resize control, decrease the dimension of the active application area and increase the dimension of the dash card area.

Responsive to a first selection input to a physical knob control, a menu is displayed at least partially surrounding the physical knob control, the menu having a plurality of menu item each associated with a respective action, the menu overlaying at least a portion of the onscreen controls and extending off-screen the touchscreen to allow menu items to be loaded from the sides of the touchscreen as the menu is rotated. A selection of the menu is set to an exit menu item to allow a second selection input to the physical control to dismiss the menu. Responsive to rotational input to the knob, the menu is rotated about the physical knob control to change the selection of the menu. Responsive to receipt of the second selection input, performing the action of the menu item at the selection.

Touch input from a user may be selectively ignored. Responsive to receipt of touch input to a physical control, the physical control at least partially overlapping a touchscreen configured to display onscreen controls, a size of an exclusion zone surrounding the physical control may be increased from a default size to an enlarged size greater than the default size, the exclusion zone representing an area of the touchscreen within which touch input to the touchscreen is not passed to an application executed by the processor. Responsive to a lack of receipt of the touch input to the physical control, the size of the exclusion zone may be decreased from the enlarged size to the default size, allowing touch input to onscreen controls outside the default size of the exclusion zone to be passed to the application.

A system includes a processor configured to detect an application initiation request. The processor is further configured to determine whether current vehicle connectivity availability is sufficient to support remote execution of the application. Also, the processor is configured to launch a local version of the application, responsive to determining that current vehicle connectivity is insufficient to support remote execution. The processor is further configured to request that a remote server launch an instance of the application, once current vehicle connectivity is sufficient to support remote execution.

The centralized access can be provided by a media control interface that receives user inputs and interacts with media programs resident on the computing device to produce graphical user interfaces that can be presented on a display device.

Various 'media-components' are provided in a 'multi-media center.' In modular architecture, a module-controller communicates with media-modules provided for various media-components. A media-module can include or obtain data pertaining to a particular media-component, identify media-player(s), and access information related to their media. However, the media-modules are isolated from each other, and the module-controller effectively controls output generated in response to user input. A user interface library is provided for the media-modules. Media-modules can obtain a template or other tools from the library and construct their user interface (e.g., menus). Media-modules can also identify a media-player that can be initiated in response to user input. Subsequently, the media-controller forwards user input to the media-player.

Techniques and systems for intelligent navigation of sequential media content are disclosed. The intelligent navigation is well suited to enable users to better control media playback with regards to a media playback application operating on a computing device. One embodiment of a method for playing sequential media content by a media playback application operating on a computing device includes at least the acts of: initiating playing of the sequential media content by the media playback application; receiving a user input requesting to start playing at a new position in the sequential media content; marking a current position in the sequential media content; thereafter initiating playing of the sequential media content at the new position; receiving a user input requesting to reset playing to the marked current position; and subsequently initiating playing of the sequential media content at the marked current position.
