Mold for the continuous casting of preliminary sections, in particular double T-shaped preliminary sections, such as beam blank sections or similar sections, wherein all the interior walls of the mold in a mold passage have a tapered course running linearly from top to bottom, this tapered course being dimensioned depending on the degree of shrinkage of the cast strand and produced by machining the interior walls. In this manner, it is possible to optimally adjust the diameter of the mold to the shrinkage process of the cast strand in the region of the mold passage, even for large-sized sections.

An apparatus for starting the casting of a continuous casting system has a mold () and a strand guide () comprising drive and guide rollers (). Moreover, a dummy bar () that can be introduced into the mold () by the strand guide () and be withdrawn from said mold is provided. A safety device () for the dummy bar () has an element () that can be engaged, with form fit, with the dummy bar () and limiting the speed of the cold bar (). It is thus guaranteed that a predetermined maximum strand speed can not be exceeded and that the dummy bar does not slide through.

Apparatus for starting the casting of a continuous casting system

In a system for sealing a dummy bar head in a mould of a continuous casting plant for casting large-format preliminary sections, a flat gasket () to seal the gap between the dummy bar head and the mould is provided, which is held on a packing plate () contained on the dummy bar head. Said packing plate has approximately the cross-sectional shape of the mould profile and covers the flat gasket (). The packing plate () is displaceable towards the centre of the mould by an amount which is a function of the conicity of the mould (). To this end, it consists of two plate halves () lying in one plane with respect to each other. This makes it possible, when inserting the dummy bar head, to compensate for the angled course of the mould with the contracting packing plate until the sealing gap between packing plate and mould remains uniform on all sides.
