A novel polymer optical waveguide and method of manufacturing is presented herein. A digitally manufactured process is described which utilizes a micro-dispensed UV optical adhesive as the contour guiding cladding, a fused deposition modeling technology for creating a core, and a subtractive laser process to finish the two ends of the optical interconnect. The optical waveguide can be printed directly on a circuit board in some embodiments. Alternatively, using a slightly modified process including a step to bond the optical fiber to the substrate, the optical interconnect can be manufactured on a flexible substrate.

An apparatus includes a substrate and an electronic circuit comprising a plurality of conductive tracts forming a printed litz line on the substrate for distributing a signal therebetween in order to increase effective conductance relative to a single conductive line not divided into tracts. The plurality of conductive tracts may be formed by printing a pattern on the substrate and removing portions of the pattern to leave the plurality of conductive tracts. The removing portions of the pattern may be performed by a removal process such as laser cutting, milling, etching, or masking. For example, the removal may be performed by applying ultrashort laser pulses. The printing may be performed by a jetting process, a spray process, an extrusion process, a dispensing process, and/or other types of processes for applying materials.

In various embodiments, a three-dimensional (3D) printed tripolar antenna fabricated through additive manufacturing techniques to match the geometries of various commercial wireless node packages is provided. The antenna systems are designed to mitigate harsh channel conditions by implementing polarization diversity between three mutually orthogonal monopoles.

Disclosed is a phase shifter capable of achieving 360&#xb0; phase shifts. The phase shifter includes an active balanced-to-unbalanced (balun) circuit for splitting an input signal into two signals offset in phase. The phase shifter further includes an active all-pass network electrically coupled to an output of the active balun circuit. The active all-pass network can include an active tunable inductor. A variable-gain amplifier (VGA) is electrically coupled to an output of the active all-pass network.

In one embodiment, a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag includes a substrate having a top surface including first and second ends, a bottom surface, first and second end surfaces, and opposed lateral surfaces, a passive RFID integrated circuit (IC) chip mounted to the top surface of the substrate, a monopole antenna that includes a planar radiating arm that extends out from the RFID IC chip along the top surface of the substrate to the first end of the top surface of the substrate and a matching loop having two grounded matching stubs that surround the chip and a portion of the radiating arm, each matching stub comprising a longitudinal segment that extends along a longitudinal direction of the substrate and a transverse segment that extends along a transverse direction of the substrate along the top surface of the substrate to the radiating arm at a point located between the RFID IC chip and the first end of the top surface, and a ground plane formed on the bottom surface, the second end surface, and the top surface of the substrate, the ground plane wrapping around the substrate so as to extend from the second end of the top surface toward the RFID IC chip and being electrically coupled to the matching stubs and the radiating arm.

In some embodiments, a mechanically reconfigurable slot antenna includes an electrically conductive layer having multiple slots, multiple electrically conductive parasitic patches, each patch associated with one of the slots, and a rack-and-pinion mechanism adapted to simultaneously linearly displace at least two of the patches along their associated slots.

In one embodiment, a method for monitoring a structure includes associating a passive sensor with the structure, the sensor being configured to measure a physical parameter of the structure that is indicative of the structure's condition, associating a dual-channel transceiver with the structure, the transceiver having a sensing repeater that operates on a first channel and a reference repeater that operates on a second channel, wherein the sensing repeater is connected to the passive sensor, receiving with a receive antenna of the reference repeater an interrogation signal transmitted from an interrogation device, multiplying a frequency of the received interrogation signal with the reference repeater to generate a reference response signal having a multiplied frequency, and transmitting the reference response signal with the reference repeater to the interrogation device.

Compact dual-channel transceivers

In one embodiment, a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag including a substrate having a top surface, bottom surface, opposed end surfaces, and opposed lateral surfaces, a passive RFID integrated circuit (IC) chip mounted to the top surface of the substrate, a monopole antenna that includes a planar radiating arm that extends out from the RFID IC chip along the top surface of the substrate and a matching loop having two grounded matching stubs that surround the chip and a portion of the radiating arm, and a ground plane formed on the bottom surface, an end surface, and the top surface of the substrate, the ground plane being electrically coupled to the matching stubs and the radiating arm.

A flexible microwave antenna having a 'fish-scale' ground plane is provided. The approach represents a significant advance in the combined thickness and flexibility that can be achieved, especially when using relatively thick substrates which are important for optimum antenna performance. An increase in gain was observed when bent in a positive radius of curvature and further reduction of back radiation.

In accordance with the present invention, novel superparamagnetic magneto-dielectric polymer nanocomposites are synthesized using a novel process. The tunability of the dielectric/magnetic properties demonstrated by this novel highly-viscous solvent-free polymer nanocomposite that is amenable to building 3D electromagnetic structures/devices by using processes such as 3D printing, compression molding or injection molding, when an external DC magnetic field is applied, exceeds what has been previously reported for magneto-dielectric polymer nanocomposite materials.
