Red, blue and green lasers respectively emit a plurality of red, blue and green laser beams having respective output powers. The beams are optically focused and collinearly arranged to form a composite beam which is swept by a pair of scan mirrors in a pattern of scan lines on a projection surface, each scan line having a number of pixels. A controller causes selected pixels to be illuminated, and rendered visible, by the composite beam to produce an image. A safety circuit detects a malfunction of at least one of the lasers and the scan mirrors, and deenergizes the at least one of the lasers and the scan mirrors upon detection of the malfunction.

A unitary body of optical material and associated methods for reading indicia such as bar codes is provided. The unitary body can focus light from a light source into a beam, redirect light reflected from a target to a photodetector, and provide mechanical support for a light source, printed circuit board, or other indicia reader components. In comparison to conventional apparatus, the unitary body requires a reduced number of components and is therefore easier and less expensive to manufacture and assemble. The unitary design increases reliability and performance consistency while decreasing sensitivity to thermal and mechanical loading. Moreover, the unitary body reduces the overall tolerance budget of a reader and therefore facilitates mass production of optical apparatus and readers. The unitary body and associated methods may be implemented in a compact reader with the aforementioned advantages in the form of a pen, or can be integrated into an antenna of a wireless device, such as a cell phone or a PDA.

Molded imager optical packages are disclosed which are particularly adapted for use in miniaturized, linear sensor-based code reading engines. A miniature light beam scanner includes a moving optical element formed on a substrate with electrodes for driving the optical element and sensing its motion as indicated by a varying capacitance between the optical element and the substrate. Control and driver circuitry responsive to the variation in capacitance drives the optical element to move at a resonant frequency and predetermined amplitude.

An integrated optical module for an optical scanner has a lens spaced from a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) by a spacer of defined dimensions. The module, in an alternative embodiment, includes a wafer frame, a suspended mirror mounted for oscillation on the frame, a wafer substrate bonded beneath the frame and a wafer cover bonded above the frame. The cover includes a mirror travel stop to protect the mirror against shocks. A VCSEL mounted to the wafer cover produces a beam which is shaped and deflected by a diffractive optical element onto the oscillating mirror. The reflected beam passes out of the module toward an indicia to be read. Large numbers of such devices may be fabricated relatively cheaply using wafer-scale processing and assembly technology. Three large wafers are fabricated corresponding respectively to arrays of substrates, frames and covers. The large wafers are bonded together in a sandwich arrangement, and are then diced to produce the individual scan modules. The modules may provide either one-dimensional or two-dimensional scanning.

A combined range laser scanner and method for electro-optically reading indicia such as bar codes having parts of different light reflectivity which utilizes two laser diode optical illumination systems optimally focused for different working ranges. A first laser illumination system is optimized for contact operation and has a range extending to approximately two feet. The second laser illumination system is optimized for longer range scanning from approximately two to seventeen feet, and the two laser scanning systems are integrated into one combined range laser scanner. The combined range laser scanner incorporates therein logic circuitry which enables either laser illumination system as required for the particular scanning application. Depending upon which laser illumination system is selected, the laser spot speed (e.g. amplitude of the drive signal for the scanning motor) is controlled to limit the frequency of received light signals to that of standard signal processing and decoding circuits. Scanning is achieved with a common oscillating mirror element driven by a scanning motor, and the amplitude of the applied scanning motor driving signal is greater for the first laser illumination system optimized for contact or short range operation and less for the second laser illumination system for longer range scanning.

Combined range, turn parallel beam assembly with common focusing element

A bar code reader capable of working over a wider range of working angle and for a wider range of bar code densities, using improved optics and sensing elements. The optics and sensing elements and/or the associated circuitry are arranged to provide two channels of data derived from the scanned bar code. The two channels have differing resolutions. Analysis of the data from the two channels provides a single decoded result. As the working angle and density vary at least one of the resolutions will be appropriate for sensing all or most of the bar coded data. The data from the channel producing a valid result can be used, or if neither channel produces a valid result by itself, data from each channel can be analyzed and valid portions of the data from both channels combined to produce the single decoded result. The different resolution of the two channels can be provided using different size photodetection areas, e.g., small and large groups of active areas on a sensor array.

The method and apparatus of this invention facilitate operation of a bar code reader over a wider range of working angle and for a wider range of bar code densities. The invention includes improved optics and sensing elements. A dual motor speed control circuit for providing independent speed control of two motors in a laser scanning device is disclosed herein. This apparatus utilizes a single input signal having variable frequency and duty cycle components. The speed of the first motor is controlled by utilizing the frequency component of said input signal while the speed of the second motor is controlled by utilizing the frequency and duty cycle components of said input signal. Specifically, a DC signal is generated that is dependent upon the duty cycle component of said input signal and said DC signal is utilized to offset the speed of the second motor from the speed value as determined by the frequency component of said input signal.
