An electrochemical cell is described, including an anodic chamber and a cathodic chamber separated by an electrolyte separator tube, all contained within a cell case. The cell also includes an electrically insulating ceramic collar positioned at an opening of the cathodic chamber, and defining an aperture in communication with the opening; along with a cathode current collector assembly; and at least one metallic ring that has a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) in the range of about 3 to about 7.5 ppm/&#xb0; C., contacting at least a portion of a metallic component within the cell, and an adjacent ceramic component. An active braze alloy composition attaches and hermetically seals the ring to the metallic component and the collar. Sodium metal halide batteries that contain this type of cell are also described, along with methods for sealing structures within the cell.

High temperature electrochemical cell structures, and methods for making

The present application provides configurations, components, assemblies and methods for sealing cells of sodium-based thermal batteries, such as NaMx cells. In some embodiments the cells may include an integrated bridge member hermetically sealed to an electrically conductive case and a ceramic collar of the cell to hermetically seal an anodic chamber of the cell. In some embodiments the cells may include the ceramic collar hermetically sealed to an electrolyte separator tube of the cell to hermetically seal the anodic chamber of the cell. In some embodiments the anodic chamber may be defined, at least in part, by the case, integrated bridge member, ceramic collar and electrolyte separator tube. In some embodiments the cells may include a current collector hermetically sealed to the ceramic collar, and a cap member hermetically sealed to the current collector tube to hermetically seal a cathodic chamber of the cell.

Sealed sodium-based thermal batteries and methods of sealing same

A composition includes a metal precursor. The metal precursor may include an inorganic ligand and a metal cation. The inorganic ligand may include a carbamate group. An associated method is provided.

Composition and associated method

A method for forming a nanocomposite material and articles made with the nanocomposite material are presented. The method comprises providing a molten material; providing a nano-sized material, the nano-sized material being substantially inert with respect to the molten material; introducing the nano-sized material into the molten material; dispersing the nano-sized material within the molten material using at least one dispersion technique selected from the group consisting of agitating the molten material using ultrasonic energy to disperse the nano-sized material within the molten material, introducing at least one active element into the molten material to enhance wetting of the nano-sized material by the molten material, and coating the nano-sized material with a wetting agent to promote wetting of the molten metal on the nano-sized material; and solidifying the molten material to form a solid nanocomposite material, the nanocomposite material comprising a dispersion of the nano-sized material within a solid matrix.

Method for making materials having artificially dispersed nano-size phases and articles made therewith

A method for mitigating stress corrosion cracking of a component exposed to a high temperature water in a high temperature water system is provided. The method comprises the steps of lowering corrosion potential conditions to a desired low corrosion potential in the high temperature water environment; and introducing a first material comprising zinc into the high temperature water environment, such that the desired low corrosion potential facilitates transport of the first material into cracks in a structure communicative with the high temperature water environment.

Mitigation of stress corrosion cracking of structural materials exposed to a high temperature water

A method and system for reducing stress corrosion cracking in a hot water system, such as a nuclear reactor, by reducing the electrochemical corrosion potential of components exposed to high temperature water within the structure. The method includes the steps of: providing a reducing species to the high temperature water; and providing a plurality of noble metal nanoparticles having a mean particle size of up to about 100 nm to the high temperature water during operation of the hot water system. The catalytic nanoparticles, which may contain at least one noble metal, form a colloidal suspension in the high temperature water and provide a catalytic surface on which a reducing species reacts with least one oxidizing species present in the high temperature water. The concentration of the oxidizing species is reduced by reaction with the reducing species on the catalytic surface, thereby reducing the electrochemical corrosion potential of the component.

Application of catalytic nanoparticles to high temperature water systems to reduce stress corrosion cracking

A method for mitigating stress corrosion cracking in high temperature water includes introducing catalytic nanoparticles and dielectric nanoparticles to the high temperature water in an amount effective to reduce a electrochemical corrosion potential of the high temperature water.

Process to mitigate stress corrosion cracking of structural materials in high temperature water

A dispersion strengthening method for metallic melts that are used to form large articles. The method comprises adding nanophase particles into a molten metallic melt and dispersing the nanophase particles in the metallic melt. The nanophase particles comprising particles with diameters in the range of about 5 nanometers to about 100 nanometers. The step of dispersing the nanophase particles in the metallic melt spaces the particles from each other with an average interparticle spacing (IPS) in a range from about 10 nanometers to about 500 nanometers.

Dispersion strengthening by nanophase addition

A steel comprises additives including rare earth elements, boron and at least one of rhenium, osmium, iridium, ruthenium, rhodium. The steel exhibits resistance to embrittlement, oxidation and creep. The steel also comprises balanced amounts of nickel and cobalt to minimize a ratio of nickel to cobalt, and optimize aging embrittlement resistance with as tempered toughness. The steel comprises, by weight percent: at least one of rhenium, osmium, iridium, ruthenium, rhodium (0.01 to 2.00); rare earth element (0.50 max.); boron (0.001-0.04); carbon (0.08-0.15); silicon (0.01-0.10); chromium (8.00-13.00); at least one of tungsten and molybdenum (0.01 to 2.00); at least one austenite stabilizer; such as nickel, copper, cobalt and manganese (0.001-6.00); vanadium (0.25-0.40); phosphorus (0.010 max.); sulfur (0.004 max.); nitrogen (0.060 max.); hydrogen (2 ppm max.); oxygen (50 ppm max.); aluminum (0.001-0.025); arsenic (0.0060 max.); antimony (0.0030 max.); tin (0.0050 max.); iron (balance).

Steel alloys

A stainless steel comprises additives including at least one of rare earth elements and boron, so as to exhibit resistance to long term aging embrittlement. The stainless steel also contains balanced amounts of nickel and cobalt to minimize a ration of nickel to cobalt and optimize aging embrittlement resistance with as tempered toughness.
