Data bits are mapped to a lower number of slots than the number of slots available for a retransmission frame and control channels are transmitted in all available slots of the retransmission frame. The number of available slots in the retransmission frame is greater than the number of available slots in the original frame.

Method of re-transmitting an original frame

After a maximum noise rise for a cell is set, a maximum noise rise for each mobile station is allocated within the cell. The actual noise rise from each mobile station within the cell is measured at a base station and signaled to a network. When the cell uses enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH), the contribution to noise rise of E-DCH signaling is determined and received signal code power (RSCP) at the base station is measured. The RSCP measurement is decoded to determine contributions from mobile stations within and outside the cell; contributions from mobile stations within the cell are calculated; and the network is notified of the measured noise rise. In addition a compensation value may be applied to compensate for temperature induced noise.

Two power control loops for antenna switching transmit diversity are realized by a user terminal including two antennas (), one power amplifier () for amplifying the signals to be transmitted from each of the antennas, and a switch () switching the transmission power of the power amplifier from one antenna to the other antenna. Accordingly, the user terminal is enabled to alternately transmit data packets, with its two antennas. A closed loop power control mechanism in the user terminal is adapted to update, on receipt of a transmission power control command from a base station, the transmission power relative to the level of two slots previously.

The management unit () is provided with inputs () to receive measurements of external parameters (to). The management unit further comprises a processor () to process the received measurements and a traffic shaping function generator () to receive the processed measurements and generate a traffic shaping function. The management unit () inputs the generated traffic shaping function to the traffic shaping unit () via the feed path (), whereby the traffic management unit controls transmissions from the mobile device.

Resources are allocated in a communication system by setting specific time and frequency chunks within a band to provide localized and distributed resources for each of localized and distributed users. The signalling of resource allocation for each user is in the chunk at the same frequency range as the frequency range of the allocated resource, or a subset of the frequency range of the allocated resource.

A method of signaling on a downlink, information regarding scheduling resources allocated in uplink, is provided, wherein the information is contained in an uplink scheduling information message, which is formatted to contain a subset of content of any subsequent uplink scheduling information message in an ordered set of message formats. In a method of downlink operation in a communication system having a network controller, a base station and a terminal, one communication channel is scheduled by the base station; and one communication channel is scheduled by the network controller. The terminal listens to the channel scheduled by the base station at predetermined times known to the terminal and the network controller. Information is signalled from the network controller to the base station, relating to the predetermined times.

Scheduling of measurement occasions of a mobile terminal

A mobile terminal selects neighbor cell(s) to use in receiving a broadcast or multicast by deriving an estimate of cell quality for each neighbor cell; comparing the estimated quality with a minimum acceptable quality; and choosing those neighbor cells having the highest quality from the acceptable neighbor cells. The estimate of cell quality is based on a parameter of the difference between a common pilot channel transmit power and a secondary common control physical channel transmit power that is transmitted to the mobile terminal on a multimedia broadcast multicast control channel.
