A method of manufacturing a heat exchanger core from glass ceramic matrix composite includes placing one or more reinforcing fibers around one or more mandrels into a mold cavity. A glass matrix material infiltrates the one or more reinforcing fibers to produce an infiltrated core and the one or more mandrels is removed to create one or more passages passing through the infiltrated core.

The plurality of vertically built fins can extend between and connect to the plurality of parting sheets. The heat exchanger can include a plurality of layers of fins and parting sheets. The heat exchanger can include first and second flow circuits for allowing separate fluid flows to flow through the heat exchanger to exchange heat therebetween.

Additively manufactured heat exchangers and methods for making the same

An additively-manufactured heat exchanger includes fluidly-separated alternating first and second layers having respective flow channels which can include one or more features that is either a riblet or a turbulator. A riblet includes a riblet peak and/or a riblet valley, which has a riblet slope, and the riblet peak and/or riblet valley has a riblet axis that is generally parallel to either the first fluid flow direction or the second fluid flow direction. A turbulator includes a turbulator peak and/or a turbulator valley, which has a turbulator slope, and the turbulator peak and/or turbulator valley has a turbulator axis that is generally perpendicular to either the first fluid flow direction or the second fluid flow direction. The respective slope angles are generally 25-65 deg. relative to build-axis, thereby resulting in improved surface roughness and uniformity control during the build process.

Heat exchanger riblet and turbulator features for improved manufacturability and performance

A heat exchanger includes a heat exchanger body having a first end and a second end opposed to the first end along a flow axis. A plurality of flow channels is defined in the heat exchanger body extending axially with respect to the flow axis. A first set of the flow channels forms a first flow circuit and a second set of the flow channels forms a second flow circuit that is in fluid isolation from the first flow circuit. Each flow channel is fluidly isolated from the other flow channels. The flow channels all conform to a curvilinear profile.
