Transition metal ions have the ability to increase the oxidation performance of the inorganic peroxy salts at room temperature by possibly lowering their activation energy or by producing more reactive free radicals. When two transition metal salts are used together to decompose dipersulfate, it provides synergistic oxidation activity, better than obtained by dipersulfate or dipersulfate with either copper or zinc alone. The transition metals mentioned are the water soluble salts of copper and zinc. Oxidation performance of sodium dipersulface in presence of catalytic amount of copper and zinc salts was determined by measuring the destruction of crystal violet dye at a wavelength of 589 nm.

Catalytic oxidation of peroxy salts

A method for treating a recirculating water system which comprises introducing into said water system a multifunctional, multilayer tablet, wherein the multilayer tablet comprises a fast dissolving layer and a slow dissolving layer, wherein said fast dissolving layer releases a combination of active ingredients including a member selected from the group consisting of lithium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA), anhydrous sodium dichloroisocyanurate, sodium persulfate, potassium persulfate, potassium monopersulfate, sodium monopersulfate, and mixtures thereof, and at least one of a clarifier, chelating agent, sequesterant, algaestat, water softener, algaecide, corrosion inhibitor, scale inhibitor, flocculent, disintegrant, dispersant, colorant, dissolution control agent, fragrance, or surfactant and, wherein said slow dissolving layer includes a member selected from the group consisting of trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA), calcium hypochlorite, 1,3-dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DCDMH), 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DBDMH), 1-bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (BCDMH), 1,3-dichloro-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin (DCEMH), 1,3-dibromo-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin (DBEMH), 1-bromo-3-chloro-5-methyl-5-ethylhydantoin (BCEMH), and mixtures thereof, and at least one of a clarifier, chelating agent, sequesterant, algaestat, water softener, algaecide, corrosion inhibitor, scale inhibitor, flocculent, disintegrant, dispersant, colorant, dissolution control agent or surfactant.

Dual layer tablet, method of making and use thereof

A method of providing a solid oxidizer to a tank of water, while also providing a way to indicate when it is time to add more oxidizer. The preferred method includes providing the solid oxidizer in the form of an oxidizer shell with a coloring agent disposed therein. The coloring agent is substantially color stable when stored in the oxidizer shell, and the oxidizer shell is formed and shaped to enclose the coloring agent in a manner in which the coloring agent is prevented from dispersing into the water until the oxidizer shell is substantially dissolved.

Disclosed are trichloroisocyanuric acid compositions that have improved algicidal and/or fungicidal properties yet are relatively safe and non-corrosive. The compositions preferably contain between about 50% and about 95% TCCA, between about 0.5% and about 7% glycoluril, between about 2% and about 40% alum, and between about 2% and about 40% borax. The compositions generate substantially less chlorine gas than would be expected from the teachings of the prior art, especially when wet. The inventive compositions are therefore less toxic and less corrosive.

A slow-dissolving sanitizing and clarifying puck for use in water such as swimming pool water preferably includes about 63% to about 80% trichloro-s-triazinetrione, about 4% to about 12% sodium tetraborate, about 10% to about 22% aluminum sulfate, and about 1% to 5% glycoluril.
