A device is provided for controlling the forward momentum of the front surface of an automotive air bag cushion during deployment thereof. A diffuser is installed inside the air bag cushion near the gets inlet and substantially perpendicular to the flow of gas from the inflator. The diffuser results in reduced forward momentum of the front part of the air bag cushion thus permitting the lower portion of the air bag cushion to deploy toward the occupant of the vehicle so that initial contact of the air bag is made with the lower torso of an occupant. The cushion is thereby moved into a lower position in front of the occupant's torso more quickly than an air bag cushion equipped without a diffuser. The diffuser of this invention also provides secondary filtration of particulate matter from the gas stream.

A guide device for directing the deployment of an automotive air bag cushion toward the torso of an occupant by means of a tether which is folded and attached to itself at a number of locations by rupturable seams. As the air bag cushion deploys the truncated tether or tethers cause the cushion to rotate about a point where the cushion is attached to the canister thereby moving the cushion in a downward direction. The cushion is thereby moved into position in front of the occupant's torso more quickly than an air bag cushion equipped with a tether without tearseams.

A passenger airbag module deployment door attachment system includes a molded plastic deployment door unit having a front wall providing a deployment doorway. Attachment legs extend rearwardly from the front wall for interlocking engagement with mating portions of walls of the airbag module. At least one band encircles the attachment legs for holding them in their interlocking engagement. Four attachment legs are shown surrounding a deployment passageway in encircling relationship. This passageway leads from an exit of the airbag module to the deployment doorway. The four attachment legs as shown provide four support surfaces effectively surrounding the deployment passageway for supporting and directing toward the doorway a high-energy expanding cushion (airbag) during its deployment. These attachment legs absorb impact energy and provide reinforcement for the front wall of the molded plastic unit. Each attachment leg has a band-receiving channel with a convex arcuate profile for causing tension 'T' in an attachment band to provide inwardly-directed clamping force 'F' distributed along the band-receiving channel for firmly securing interlocking engagement of the attachment legs to the walls of the airbag module.

A reaction canister for a vehicle passive restraint system has its side walls weakened in the regions adjoining edges which are adjacent automotive panels likely to be impacted by occupants in the event of a low speed collision. The resultant softening serves to prevent injury.

A chute guide device for directing the deployment of a passenger side air bag along a predetermined path to the inside of a rupturable instrument panel. The chute resists deployment of the air bag behind the instrument panel. Also, the chute shields the air bag module from foreign objects which may otherwise fall into the module.
