A piston for an internal combustion engine which includes a crown having spiral features designed to increase swirl of combustion gases in a cylinder of the engine is provided. The spiral features can be located in a combustion surface or in a combustion bowl of the crown. The increased swirl of the combustion gases is expected to improve mixing of the air and fuel injected into the cylinder, and thus cause the fuel to burn more completely, achieve better efficiency out of the injected fuel, and reduce unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas.

A vehicle exhaust system including an exhaust pipe section, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst, and a burner assembly, connected to the exhaust pipe section at a position upstream of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst, for pre-heating the exhaust system prior to engine start-up. The burner assembly includes a burner with a combustion chamber and a connecting tube that extends between the burner and the exhaust pipe section. A metallic mesh filter element is located inside the connecting tube and/or a catalytic washcoat is disposed on an inner surface of the connecting tube to reduce emissions of the burner assembly at start-up. The catalytic washcoat comprises a mixture of a support material and a catalyst material that chemically reacts with emissions generated by the burner to reduce the amount of burner produced emissions released from the exhaust system during pre-heating.

Selective catalytic reduction catalyst pre-heating burner assembly and method of controlling burner emissions

An exhaust control system for a vehicle includes a temperature sensor positioned downstream of an exhaust burner and upstream of an SCR catalyst in an exhaust system. The temperature sensor is configured to generate a measurement signal indicative a temperature of exhaust flowing through the exhaust system at an outlet of a DPF positioned downstream of the exhaust burner. An exhaust control module is configured to turn the exhaust burner on to heat the exhaust, monitor the temperature of the exhaust based on the measurement signal, subsequent to turning the exhaust burner on, turn the exhaust burner off based on an upper threshold temperature of the exhaust, and, subsequent to turning the exhaust burner off, turn the exhaust burner on based on a lower threshold temperature of the exhaust. The lower threshold temperature is less than the upper threshold temperature.

Multi-tier exhaust burner control for SCR catalyst pre-heating

An exhaust control system for a vehicle includes at least one temperature sensor, positioned within an exhaust system of the vehicle, that is configured to generate a measurement signal indicative of at least one of an inlet temperature and an outlet temperature of a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). An exhaust control module is configured to turn on an exhaust burner on to heat exhaust flowing through the exhaust system, determine a total stored heat within the DOC based in part on the measurement signal, subsequent to turning on the exhaust burner, turn off the exhaust burner based on an upper threshold of the total stored heat, and, subsequent to turning off the exhaust burner, turn on the exhaust burner based on a lower threshold of the total stored heat, wherein the lower threshold is less than the upper threshold.

Exhaust burner control for reduced fuel consumption

An exhaust treatment assembly for receiving exhaust gas from a motor vehicle includes a mix pipe, a sheath, and a heater. The mix pipe at least partially defines a passage adapted to receive the exhaust gas and a chemical reductant. The sheath includes a first end fluidly sealed to the mix pipe. At least a portion of the sheath is radially spaced apart from the mix pipe to at least partially define a gap. The heater is disposed in the gap. The heater is adapted to heat a reductant impingement surface.

Electrically-heated mix pipe for processing diesel exhaust fluid in a selective catalytic reduction system

An exhaust control system of a vehicle includes a fuel injector configured to inject fuel into a combustion chamber of a burner of an exhaust system upstream of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst; an air pump configured to pump air into the combustion chamber of the burner; a spark plug configured to ignite an air/fuel mixture within the combustion chamber of the burner; a fuel control module configured to, while an engine is off before an engine startup, selectively actuate the fuel injector and begin fuel injection; a pump control module configured to, while the engine is off before the engine startup, selectively turn on the air pump; and a spark control module configured to, while the engine is off and before the engine startup, selectively apply power to the spark plug and begin providing spark.

Selective catalytic reduction catalyst pre-heating and exhaust burner air control

An exhaust control system includes: a temperature control module configured to, in response to a shutdown of an engine, turn on an air pump that, when on, pumps air into an exhaust system of the engine upstream of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst; a target module configured to, while the air pump is on and the engine is off in response to the shutdown, selectively determine a target rate of injection of a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) by a DEF injector based on increasing a present amount of ammonia stored by the SCR catalyst to at least a predetermined amount of ammonia; and a DEF control module configured to, while the air pump is on and the engine is off in response to the shutdown, control injection of the DEF by the DEF injector upstream of the SCR catalyst based on the target rate.

Engine off selective catalytic reduction catalyst loading

An exhaust after-treatment system that is configured to treat an exhaust produced by an engine, and includes a bypass passage including an inlet for receiving an amount of the exhaust from an exhaust passage. A first exhaust treatment component is located within the bypass passage, and a valve is located proximate the bypass passage that is configured to control the amount of the exhaust that enters the inlet of the bypass passage. A second exhaust treatment component is located in the exhaust passage downstream from the inlet of the bypass passage, wherein an outlet of the bypass passage communicates the exhaust treated by the first exhaust treatment component back to the exhaust passage at a location that is downstream from the second exhaust treatment component such that the exhaust treated by the first exhaust treatment component does not interact with the second exhaust treatment component.

Exhaust after-treatment system having an oxidation component bypass for low temperature SCR

The present disclosure provides a method of producing an insulation preform having graded porosity for an exhaust treatment component of a vehicle. The method includes obtaining a first granular insulating material having a first diameter, a second granular insulating material having a second diameter less than the first diameter, an inorganic binder, and water. The method further includes producing a slurry comprising the first granular insulating material, the second granular insulating material, the inorganic binder, and water. The slurry is introduced into a mold having at least one surface adapted for vacuum extraction. A liquid phase of the slurry is evacuated from the mold using vacuum extraction to produce a moist preform. The moist preform has graded porosity such that a greater concentration of the second insulation material is adjacent to the at least one surface than the first insulating material. The moist preform is heated to produce the insulation preform.
