An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas pathway that receives exhaust gas from the engine, a temperature sensor configured to generate a temperature signal associated with a temperature of the exhaust gas at a position along the exhaust gas pathway, and a reductant source. The system also includes first and second injectors in fluid communication with the reductant source. The first and second injectors are configured to inject reductant into the exhaust gas pathway at first and second rates. The system also includes a first treatment element positioned downstream of the first injector and within the exhaust gas pathway, and a controller in communication with the temperature sensor. The controller is configured to receive the temperature signal from the temperature sensor and adjust at least one of the first rate or the second rate based at least in part on the temperature signal.

An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas pathway configured to receive exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine, a first ammonia injector configured to inject ammonia into the exhaust gas pathway at a first rate, and a first treatment element positioned downstream of the first ammonia injector. A second ammonia injector is positioned downstream of the first treatment element. The second ammonia injector is configured to inject ammonia into the exhaust gas pathway at a second rate. A controller is configured to estimate an amount of particulate present in the exhaust gas and adjust at least one of the first rate or the second rate based on the estimate.

System and method for regulating exhaust emissions

An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust gas pathway configured to receive exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine, an ammonia source, and a first ammonia injector in fluid communication with the ammonia source. The first ammonia injector is configured to inject ammonia into the exhaust gas pathway at a first rate. The exhaust gas treatment system also includes a first treatment element positioned downstream of the first ammonia injector and a second ammonia injector in fluid communication with the ammonia source and positioned downstream of the first treatment element. The second ammonia injector is configured to inject ammonia into the exhaust gas pathway at a second rate different from the first rate. The exhaust gas treatment system further includes a second treatment element positioned downstream of the second ammonia injector.

A particulate and siloxane filtration system may include a housing and a filter media assembly. The filter media assembly may be disposed within the housing and positioned to filter intake gases to an internal combustion engine. The filter media assembly may include a particulate media configured to remove particulates from the intake gases and a siloxane media configured to remove siloxanes from the intake gases.

A Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) that includes urea, demineralized water and between 5 and 300 ppm formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propianaldehyde, or butyraldehyde, and this formulation of DEF include less than 0.6 ppm of phosphates, calcium, iron, aluminum, magnesium, sodium, and potassium, the formulation also includes less than 0.3 ppm copper, zinc, chromium, and nickel. This formulation of DEF reduces the accumulation of urea deposit in the diesel exhaust system relative to other formulation of specification grade DEF that include less formaldehyde.

Diesel exhaust fluid formulation that reduces urea deposits in exhaust systems

Aspects of the invention include Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) that include a layer of inert particles some of which are in contact with a catalyst and are associated with the surface of the filter. Particles associated with the inlet side of the filter are sized such that they coat portions of the inlet surface and portions of the channels that connect the inlet surface to the wall separating the inlet surface from the outlet surface. In some aspects the particles comprise alumina of between about 1.0 microns to about 40.0 microns and colloidal alumina particles that are between about 1.0 nm to about 10.0 nm. The coating is applied by contacting the filter body especially the inlet channels of the filter body with a washout that includes the different sized particles and at least one catalyst that facilitates the conversion of soot particles into gases.

A method for regeneration of a CDPF disposed in the exhaust stream of a diesel engine. The method includes a second phase operation following a first phase substantially as disclosed in the prior art. As the first phase ends, as indicated by a temperature sensor at the exit end of the CDPF, the temperature and oxygen content of the exhaust gas are increased at the entrance to the CDPF in an ensuing second stage. These increases cause oxidation of the soot remaining near the entrance and the sides of the CDPF, resulting in a cleaner and higher-capacity CDPF than is produced by a single-phase regeneration in the prior art. The sequential stages are implemented via an algorithm programmed into an Engine Control Module (ECM). A CDPF regenerated in accordance with the invention can have approximately 95% of its filtration capacity restored.

Method for improving regeneration of a catalytic diesel particulate filter

A method for triggering a new regeneration event in a soot-trapping particulates filter disposed in an exhaust gas stream of an internal combustion engine, comprising the steps of determining instantaneous engine speed and engine load; determining instantaneous mass fractions for wet soot and for dry soot in the exhaust gas stream for the instantaneous engine speed and load; determining instantaneous concentrations of wet and dry soot particles in the exhaust gas; determining the rates of accumulation of wet soot and dry soot in the particulates filter; determining the total amounts of wet soot and dry soot accumulated in said soot-trapping device during all engine operation conditions since the latest previous regeneration event; and triggering the new regeneration event when the total amount of wet soot and dry soot exceeds a permissible value.

Method for triggering a regeneration event in a particulates filter of an internal combustion engine

An apparatus and method to compute the trajectory of a moving object by remote, non-interfering sensors. The particular application computes the trajectory of a pitched baseball throughout its flight, including the ball's trajectory as it passes in the vicinity of a three-dimensional strike zone. The apparatus includes two pairs of video cameras, an alignment mechanism, video-storage means, a digitizer, a computer, output devices, and an operator's console. This apparatus is required to identify the ball, compute its position in three dimensions as a function of time, compute ball speed trajectory, and present the output via computer graphics to present the viewer with essentially any desired view of the pitch.
