Sensor film for endoscopic instruments

The present disclosure provides a medical training simulation apparatus for training medical professionals, emergency medical support personnel, military personnel, parents or families of persons who have or will be undergoing neck or airway surgery, or any other persons requiring a simulator for learning the anatomy or practicing procedures or surgery of the neck and/or airway. The apparatus may include a simulated base that may be free standing or may rest on a mannequin and may have a hole for accessing the simulated airway, simulated skin, simulated fat, simulated lymph nodes, simulated neck musculature, simulated arteries and veins with simulated blood therein, simulated thyroid gland, simulated parathyroid glands, simulated laryngeal and tracheal cartilage including the hyoid bone, thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage, tracheal rings, epiglottis and arytenoid cartilages, mucosa, recurrent laryngeal nerves, trachealis muscle, esophagus and prevertebral fascia. The apparatus may include alteration or addition of one or more anatomical parts to simulate congenital or acquired anomalies. One or more parts of the simulation apparatus may be disposable or replaceable.

Simulator for practicing surgery or procedures involving the neck and airway and method of use thereof

The present disclosure provides a surgical shunt assembly tool that provides a more efficacious grip on the catheter tubes and prevent the tip of the catheter from buckling while the catheter is pushed onto the tip of the valve during installation of shunts during CSF shunt surgery. The tool includes standard handles such as used in a shodded mosquito tool having a clamping jaw integrated into the distal end section of the handle. The distal jaw includes two forcep jaw sections each having a proximal end integrally formed with a distal end of a distal end arm section of one of the two handle arms, and a distal end section extending away from the distal end arm section. The distal end sections of the forcep jaw sections are cylindrically shaped such that when the forcep jaw is closed by bringing the two forcep jaw sections together, a cylinder is formed having a diameter substantially equal to a diameter of a catheter tube to be attached to a shunt valve tip. The proximal ends of the forcep jaw sections are oval shaped and have a size such that when the forcep jaw is closed bringing the two forcep jaw sections together, an oval shaped opening is formed having a size smaller than the diameter of the catheter tube such that the catheter tube is squeezed closed to provide a firm grip of the tool of the catheter tube.

Surgical shunt assembly tool

A method for sensing at least one property with an instrument, wherein the instrument comprises an elongate shaft body; the method comprising the steps of: securing a sensor film conformally to the elongate shaft body, the sensor film comprising: at least one substrate core having a first surface and a second surface; at least one sensing element; a first conductive layer residing on the first surface, the first conductive layer having first solder mask coated thereon, and wherein the first conductive layer is grounded; a second conductive layer residing on the second surface, the second conductive layer having a second solder mask coated thereon, and coupled to the at least one sensing element; causing the at least one sensing element to measure at least one property and output a sensed signal and to convey the sensed signal via the second conductive layer to an electronics module.

A flexible elongate shaft assembly which includes an elongate flexible tube having at least one joint built into the elongate flexible tube, and the at least one joint comprised of at least one notch. Each notch includes a contact-aided compliant notch topology built into the elongate flexible shaft configured to cause each notch to mechanically interfere with itself and self-reinforce during bending of each notch resulting in an increase in stiffness of each notch to prevent buckling and plastic deformation of the elongate flexible shaft assembly, and assume a predetermined and designed bending shape of the elongate flexible shaft assembly. The flexible elongate shaft assembly is incorporated into a flexible articulate surgical tool that provides the needed stiffness in order to be able to manipulate tissue and bear loads in anatomically confined spaces. The surgical tool includes a clinician operated handle, the flexible elongated shaft assembly extending from the handle to a surgical tool with the flexible elongate tube having one or more joint sections located near the surgical tool. A flexible cable connects the handle to the surgical tool. The joint sections are configured so that when the clinician activates the surgical tool, a mechanical interference is generated in each of the notches and this mechanical interference not only increases stiffness throughout the articulation of the notch's range-of-motion but it also serves the dual purpose of controlling the bent 'shape' of the flexible portion of the notch.

Flexible articulate surgical tool

A surgical tool for compact articulating during surgical procedures includes a pitch cable, at least one yaw cable, a first link, a second link, at least one end-effector link, and at least one tensioning mechanism. The first link has a pitch joint end with a pitch joint pin and at least one yaw cable guide channel. The second link has a yaw joint end with a yaw joint pin. The second link is rotatably connected to the pitch joint pin. The at least one end-effector link is rotatably connected to said yaw joint pin. The yaw cables are coupled to the end-effector links such that the yaw cables can actuate the end-effector links about the yaw joint pin. The yaw cable guide channel is configured such that the yaw cables travel through a smooth trajectory to the end-effector links. The tensioning mechanism is configured to maintain a constant length.

Dexterous 4-DOF surgical tool for compact articulation

An endoscopic instrument for use with a trocar, said endoscopic instrument comprising an elongate shaft body having a proximal end and a distal end; an end effector assembly at said distal end operable by manipulation of actuator mechanism at said proximal end; a substrate core having a first surface and a second surface; at least one sensing element on said first surface, said at least one sensing element located adjacent to said distal end; an electronics module for receiving sensed signals from said at least one sensing element, said electronics module located adjacent to said proximal end; a first conductive layer residing on said first surface, said first conductive layer having first solder mask coated thereon; a second conductive layer residing on said second surface, second conductive layer having a second solder mask coated thereon, and wherein said second conductive layer coupled to said at least one sensing element relays said sensed signals from said at least one sensing element to said electronics module and said a first conductive layer is grounded.

A deployable and flexible tooltip camera is provided for integration within a shaft of an endoscopic tool. The tooltip camera includes a camera mounted to a distal tip of a curved tube which is capable of rotational and translational movement to provide a wide field of view of a tooltip of the endoscopic tool during an endoscopic procedure. The tube retains its curved shape when in use to provide a unique perspective view of the tooltip, but can then be withdrawn into a shaft of the endoscopic tool such that the entire tooltip camera and tube are retained within the shaft of the endoscopic tool and can pass through a cannula. The curved tube may be formed of a super-elastic memory alloy like Nitinol and pre-shaped into an s-curve using a two-step heat treatment process to attain the necessary curvature, and further laser-patterned with holes to attain the necessary flexibility.

Endoscope with deployable tooltip camera and methods of use thereof

A capsule shredding device is provided, which includes first and second housing sections. The first housing section has a chamber slightly larger than the capsule located in one end of the housing section so that when the capsule is seated in the chamber it cannot freely rotate in the chamber. A vial is releasably coupled to other end of the first housing section. One or more passageways extend from the bottom of the chamber toward the other end of the second housing section. The second housing section has an internal chamber with a spike extending into the chamber integrally formed on the interior upper section of the housing section. When the two housing sections are threaded together such that are drawn towards each other, the spike pierces the capsule, and upon further rotation the spike shreds the capsule thereby releasing the powder contained therein which flows through the one or more passageways into interior of the vial. Gaskets between the first and second housing sections and between the second housing section and the vial prevent powder or liquid in the vial escaping.

Capsule shredding device

This disclosure relates to device for providing continuous negative abdominal pressure (CNAP) which selectively recruits (inflates) the dorsal (spinal region) collapsed areas of the lung, while enabling the patient to remain in the supine (usual) position. The CNAP device includes a rigid frame configured to have a shape and size to envelop a patient's lower chest and abdominal area while in a supine position with the frame having opposed edges which sit on a surface on which the supine patient is resting. A series of panels are mounted in the frame such that the series of panels extend around the patient's lower chest and abdominal area. A flexible sheet wrapped around the outside of the panels and is long enough to extend up to the patient's upper chest and down to the patient's thighs and wide enough to envelop the supine patient's lower chest and abdominal area. Sealing members are to seal the flexible sheet over the frame and panels and around the patient's lower chest and pelvis, wherein a chamber is formed between the patient and said device when the patient is enveloped by the device. An air inlet coupling extends through one of the panels and is attachable to a suction source which is configured to generate negative pressure of between about &#x2212;5 to about &#x2212;10 cm HO inside the chamber.

Device for producing continuous negative abdominal pressure

This disclosure relates to device for providing continuous negative abdominal pressure (CNAP) which selectively recruits (inflates) the dorsal (spinal region) collapsed areas of the lung, while enabling the patient to remain in the supine (usual) position. The CNAP device includes a rigid frame configured to have a shape and size to envelop a patient's lower chest and abdominal area while in a supine position with the frame having opposed edges which sit on a surface on which the supine patient is resting. A pressure sensor is mounted to the frame for measuring a pressure inside the chamber and is connected to a display for displaying the pressure inside the chamber. An active pressure controller is connected to the pressure sensor, and a vacuum pump is in flow communication with inside the chamber and connected to the active pressure controller. The device includes a top up pump in flow communication with inside the chamber and connected to the active pressure controller which is programmed to instruct the vacuum pump to provide negative pressure in the chamber to start decompressing the chamber, and to instruct the top up pump to maintain the negative pressure in the chamber.

A modular reconfigurable surgical robot for use in association with a surgical tool is disclosed. The surgical robot includes a linear module for linear movement; a turret module for rotational movement, and elbow roll module for rotational movement, and a wrist tilt module for rotational movement. The turret module has a turret rotational axis. The elbow roll module for rotational has an elbow roll rotational axis at an angle to the turret rotational axis. The wrist tilt module has a wrist tilt rotational axis at an angle to the turret rotational axis and the elbow roll rotational axis. The linear module, turret module, elbow roll module and wrist tilt module are operably connectable together to form the surgical robot and one of the modules is operably connectable to the surgical tool. The surgical robot may include an arch device unit attachable to one of the other modules.

Surgical robot

Herein is provided an anastomosis device which includes a cylindrical support housing having a tapered section being formed of a plurality of compliant fingers integrally formed around the circumference of an end of the cylindrical section which can flex at their connection point to the cylindrical section. Each compliant finger holds a suture needle. The device includes a push rod having a cam head at one end of the rod section. The cam head is located adjacent to the tapered portion. In operation the anastomosis device is aligned with the anatomical tubular structure undergoing an anastomosis process. When a back end of the push rod is pushed towards the tapered section of the support housing, the cam head section bears against an inner surface causing each compliant finger to flex radially outwards forcing the suture needles to simultaneously pierce the wall of the anatomical tubular structure.

Device for performing end-to-end anastomosis

A folding endoscope with incorporated optical sensors and light sources includes a housing having first and second ends and a longitudinal axis and at least one channel extending between the first and second ends and associated ports at the first and second ends for inserting surgical instruments through the housing into a surgical site. The endoscope includes at least two elongate arms having proximal and distal ends and being pivotally connected at the distal ends thereof to the first end of the housing. A camera and light source are mounted on each of the elongate arms such that when the elongate arms are deployed the cameras have a field of view in a generally forward direction away from the housing. A linkage mechanism is connected to the elongate arms, and an actuator is connected to the linkage mechanism. The linkage mechanism, upon activation by the actuator, is configured to pivotally deploy the at least two elongate arms from a closed position in which the elongate arms are aligned along the longitudinal axis to an open position with the distal ends of the elongate arms radially spaced from the longitudinal axis.
