A multilayer recording element is suitable for the production of flexographic printing plates by digital information transfer and has, arranged one on top of the other on a dimensionally stable substrate, a layer (A) crosslinkable by actinic radiation, a layer (B) sensitive to IR radiation and, if required, a peelable cover sheet, the layer (A) crosslinkable by actinic radiation being capable of being washed out by means of a developer after imagewise exposure and consisting essentially of a mixture of at least one elastomeric binder, ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable organic compounds, a photoinitiator and, if required, further assistants, and the layer (B) sensitive to IR radiation being a layer which is soluble or dispersible in the developer and contains, in a film-forming binder having elastomeric character, at least one finely divided substance which has a high absorbance in the wavelength range from 750 to 20,000 nm.

Photopolymeric letterpress printing plates which are to be developed with water or water/alcohol mixtures after imagewise exposure and have, arranged one on top of the other on a dimensionally stable substrate, a layer (A) which may be bonded to the dimensionally stable substrate by an adhesion-promoting layer and is crosslinkable by actinic radiation, a layer (B) which is sensitive to IR radiation and, if required, a parting layer arranged between layer (A) and layer (B), and a peelable protective film applied to the layer (B), are produced by a process in which the layer (A) contains a mixture of at least one polymeric binder which is soluble or dispersible in water or water/alcohol mixtures, copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated organic compounds which are compatible with the polymeric binder and a photoinitiator, the layer (B) sensitive to IR radiation has an optical density.gtoreq.2.5 in the actinic range and contains a film-forming polymeric binder which is soluble or dispersible in water or water/alcohol mixtures and a substance which is finely distributed in this binder and absorbs IR radiation, and the layer (B) sensitive to IR radiation is structured by laser ablation and is then exposed uniformly to actinic radiation, developed and dried in a conventional manner. The novel process is suitable for the production of letterpress printing plates.

Photopolymeric gravure printing plates which are to be developed with water or water/alcohol mixtures after imagewise exposure and have, arranged one on top of the other on a dimensionally stable substrate, a layer (A) which may be bonded to the dimensionally stable substrate by an adhesion-promoting layer and is crosslinkable by actinic radiation, a layer (B) which is sensitive to IR radiation and, if required, a parting layer arranged between layer (A) and layer (B), and a peelable protective film applied to the layer (B), are produced by a process in which the layer (A) consists of a mixture of at least one polymeric binder which is soluble or dispersible in water or water/alcohol mixtures, copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated organic compounds which are compatible with this polymeric binder, a photoinitiator or photoinitiator system and, if required, further assistants, the parting layer which may be arranged between layer (A) and layer (B) is oxygen-permeable and the layer (B) sensitive to IR radiation has an optical density .gtoreq.2.5 in the actinic range and contains a film-forming polymeric binder which is soluble or dispersible in water or water/alcohol mixtures and at least one substance which is finely distributed in this binder, absorbs IR radiation and has a high absorbence in the wavelength range from 750 to 20,000 nm, the layer (B) sensitive to IR radiation is structured by laser ablation after the protective film has been peeled off and is then exposed uniformly to actinic radiation, developed with water or water/alcohol mixtures and dried in a conventional manner. The novel process is suitable for the production of gravure printing plates.

In a multilayer recording element which is suitable for producing flexographic printing plates by digital information transfer and has, arranged one on top of the other on a dimensionally stable substrate, a layer (A) which is crosslinkable by actinic radiation, a layer (B) sensitive to actinic radiation and, if required, a peelable cover sheet, the layer (A) crosslinkable by actinic radiation is crosslinked by imagewise exposure to actinic radiation of from 0.5 to 5 J/cm.sup.2 and can then be washed out by a developer and essentially comprises a mixture of at least one elastomeric binder, ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable organic compounds, photoinitiator, and, if required, further assistants, and the layer (B) sensitive to actinic radiation is a layer which is soluble or dispersible in developers and has an optical density of &gt;2.5 in the actinic range, undergoes a change the optical density by &gt;1 as a result of one or more laser pulses in the wavelength range from 254 to 532 nm with an energy of from &gt;5 to 50 J/cm.sup.2 and essentially comprises arylazophosphonate-containing compounds.

A photosensitive recording element comprises (A) a dimensionally stable substrate, (B) a photopolymerizable relief-forming recording layer and, if required, an adhesion-promoting layer arranged between (A) and (B), a release layer (C) applied to that side of the recording layer (B) which faces away from the substrate (A), and, if required, a cover sheet (D) applied thereon, the photopolymerizable relief-forming recording layer (B) containing b.sub.1) at least one polymeric binder, b.sub.2) at least one photopolymerizable olefinically unsaturated monomer which is compatible with b.sub.1), b.sub.3) at least one photopolymerization initiator and b.sub.4) at least one aryl alkyl ketone, and is suitable for the production of relief printing plates.

For the production of a recording element having a photopolymerizable recording layer comprising at least two individual layers having the same composition or different compositions, located one on top of the other and firmly bonded to one another, the components used for the production of the individual layers are melted together, homogeneously mixed and freed from gaseous constituents in a self-purging, twin-screw extruder. Thereafter, the component mixture is divided into two or more material streams in a manner such that at least one material stream is removed from the extruder, transported by means of a delivery pump to an adapter or to a multilayer die and bonded there with a material stream from the screw extruder after shaping in each case to give sheet-like structures. During transport of the separate material streams, further components may be metered into or mixed with said streams, so that individual layers having the same or different properties are obtained. The individual layers or the recording layer are or is subsequently calendered.

Storage-stable solutions of film forming carboxyl-containing copolymers, from 5 to 80% of whose carboxyl groups have been reacted with glycidyl (meth)acrylate, in an inert organic solvent or solvent mixture additionally contain a phosphoric ester of a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate and, if required, orthophosphoric acid, and photosensitive coatings which contain a photoinitiator, ethylenically unsaturated organic monomeric compounds which can be subjected to free radical polymerization and, if required, plasticizers, dyes, dye precursors and thermal polymerization inhibitors are produced in such storage-stable solutions.
