A method of predicting one or more resonance frequencies for efficient operation of an acoustofluidic cavity in an acoustofluidic device is provided. The method comprises the steps of i. providing a first liquid filling the cavity, ii. obtaining a first impedance spectrum, by measuring the electrical impedance of an ultrasound transducer connected to the acoustofluidic device as the transducer is driven at a range of frequencies, iii. providing a second liquid filling the cavity, wherein the second liquid differs from the first liquid in its acoustophysical properties, iv. obtaining a second impedance spectrum, by measuring the electrical impedance of the ultrasound transducer as the ultrasound transducer is driven at the range of frequencies, and v. predicting the one or more resonance frequencies for efficient operation of the acoustofluidic cavity by comparing the first and second impedance spectrum and selecting the one or more frequencies where the absolute value of the difference between the spectra, normalized by the absolute value of one of them, is largest. A method of driving an acoustofluidic device and apparatuses for predicting resonance frequencies and performing acoustofluidic operations are also provided.

Methods and apparatuses for predicting and using one or more resonance frequencies for efficient operation of an acoustofluidic cavity

The invention provides a micro scaled method and system for separating a subgroup of cells and/or particles from a mixture of different types of cells and/or particles in a suspension. The suspension is forced under pressure into an inlet and further into a pre-alignment channel wherein the suspension is subjected to a two dimensional acoustic force directed perpendicular to the length direction of the pre-alignment channel. The suspension is then forced into a second inlet and further into at least one separation channel wherein the mixture of cells and/or particles are forced towards the walls of the channel and subjected to a one dimensional acoustic force directed perpendicular to the length direction of the separation channel. Cells and/or particles having the same size and/or mass density and/or compressibility are collected through at least two outlets.

System and method to separate cells and/or particles

The invention relates to a biological microglia comprising at least two pores having a size adopted to allow cells, cell aggregates, tissue or other biological material to pass through said pores, and one or several slicing beams separating said pores from each other, wherein biological material is split/sliced/cleaved into at least two parts when passing said microgrid, a slicing device, an apparatus comprising said slicing device as well as the use of said microgrid, slicing device and apparatus.

Slicing device

The present invention provides a device and a method for separating particles from fluids using ultrasound, laminar flow, and stationary wave effects comprising a micro-technology channel system with an integrated branching point or branching fork, and a single ultrasound source. One of the characteristics of the invention is that the single ultrasound source, which generates the standing waves, excites the complete structure including the channel system. No special reflectors or the like are needed. Extremely thin dividers can separate the flow, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of the device. The device could be manufactured in silicon and the ultrasound energy could preferably be delivered by a piezoelectric element.

Device and method for separation

The invention relates to a method for etching an opening, and more precisely, to etching in a silicon plate for creating a nozzle opening. According to the invention, one side of the silicon plate ( ) is protected by a protective layer ( ), and a recess ( ) is made in the protective layer. Etching is made anisotropically through the recess so as to create a cavity ( ) in the shape of a truncated pyramid of a predetermined depth in the silicon plate. The cavity is doped so as to create a doped layer ( ) at the predetermined depth. The etching is then continued until the bottom surface of the cavity has passed the doped layer. Subsequently, etching is performed from the other side, while a voltage is applied to the doped layer, so as to free the nozzle opening at the other side. The invention enables an accurate control of the surface area of the nozzle opening. Through this, the amount of discharged fluid and the directional precision can be controlled very accurately.

Method of etching an opening

A fluid flow meter has a semi-conducting substrate and a number of integral flexible tines orientated across an aperture in the substrate to deflect in the direction of the fluid flow by an amount dependent on that fluid flow. Piezo-resistive regions are included on the respective tines to provide them with electrical characteristics which vary dependent on the degree of deflection. A monitor, operably coupled to the regions of the tines, is provided to monitor the changes in their electrical characteristics and to calculate the flow therefrom.

Fluid flow meter

A sampling cell of flow-through type and use of such a sampling cell. The sampling cell is preferably manufactured by etching of silicon wafers. It is especially useful for continuous picovolume sampling in an analytical flow. The pressure pulse generator (,) generates pulses directly into a flow channel (,). The flow channel (,) is preferably formed by a first basin (,) in a first structure (,) and a second basin (,) in a second structure (,). In a first embodiment the pressure pulse generator (,) comprises at least one piezo-ceramic disc and/or devices acting by way of magnetostrictive, electrostatical or electromechanical forces and/or devices acting by way of thermal expansion. Method of directing samples from a flow-through sampling cell by establishing a difference in electrical potential between the liquid in the flow-through sampling cell and the object to which the samples are to be directed. Use of a flow-through sampling cell for coating of surfaces, especially for achieving biospecific surfaces, for extracting samples from a continuous liquid flow, for extracting a precise sample amount by collecting a defined number of samples or for injecting samples for electrophoresis, especially capillary electrophoresis, and for electrochromatography.

Flow-through sampling cell and use thereof

A silicon-based carrier matrix having a high ratio of surface area to volume is intended for use in integrated microanalysis systems. The carrier matrix comprises at least one layer of microporous silicon on a body of monocrystalline silicon. A method for producing the carrier matrix comprises electrochemical etching of a body of monocrystalline silicon, thereby to form at least one layer of microporous silicon on this body. The use of the carrier matrix for chemical sensors in integrated microanalysis systems, as well as in various sorts of chromatography, is also disclosed.
