A locking device with a holding device for a cover of a motor vehicle trunk is movable in a longitudinal guide and can be held in form-closed manner there by a movable projection. The projection is movable by an operating device and is rotatable about a fulcrum. The operating device includes an electromotive drive and a gear, which can be a non-self-locking gear.

A drive system for a covering device, which can be rolled up or folded, for motor vehicles is equipped with a control device. The control device has a current sensor for detecting the current applied to an electric motor of the drive system in the course of moving the covering device. The at least one coupling member is provided with at least one picking-up element that acts in transverse direction to the direction of movement of the coupling member and that entrains, releases or picks up the guide element with limited entraining force during movement of the coupling member. The protective device is usable for cargo area coverings, cargo area dividers and sun-protection roller blinds.
