A computer-implemented method for projecting hierarchical storage management functions may include enumerating objects stored on an endpoint system via an agent on the endpoint system. The computer-implemented method may also include transmitting, via a web service, information relating to the enumeration to a server. The computer-implemented method may further include receiving, via the web service, a hierarchical storage management policy from the server. The computer-implemented method may additionally include enacting the hierarchical storage management policy via the agent. Various other methods and systems are also disclosed.

Systems and methods for projecting hierarchical storage management functions

Systems, methods, apparatus and software can utilize storage resource locks to prevent modification (including relocation) of data in the storage resource while a third-party copy operation directed at the storage resource is occurring. A data transport mechanism such as a data restore application requests that a relevant portion of the storage resource be locked. Once locked, the data transport mechanism requests a data mover to perform a third-party copy operation whereby data is moved from a data source to the locked portion of the storage resource. When the third party-copy operation is complete, the data transport mechanism requests release of the lock on the portion of the storage resource.

Systems, methods and apparatus for creating stable disk images

A method and system for externally managed file versions. In shared storage environments file versions may be managed utilizing sparse data objects in storage devices. A file version may comprise a chain of one or more sparse data objects, where each object may represent changes compared to the data in other objects of the chain. New, empty sparse data objects may be attached to existing object chains to create new file versions. When providing file version metadata, a metadata server may provide information for the entire object chain. Write permission may be granted only for the front-most object in a chain, while all other objects in the chain may be write-protected. A storage device may expose the presence of holes in sparse data objects to help locate information in the object chain.

A system and method for cooperative application quiescence in a computing environment. In one embodiment, a system may include a storage device configured to store data, a plurality of applications each of which is configured to issue input/output (I/O) requests to the storage device, and a quiescence manager configured to coordinate quiescence of at least a portion of the plurality of applications in response to receiving a quiescence request, where quiescence of a given application may include completing outstanding I/O requests issued by the given application.

A target storage environment having one or more storage data objects is mapped to a data structure. Any subsequent disparate or remote but similar storage environment has direct or indirect access to the data structure such that one or more of the data objects are permissibly directly/indirectly referenced or replicated within the disparate or remote but similar storage storage environment. Changes to the data structure are communicated, thereby ensuring the reliable use of the representation for the target storage environment.

Methods and systems to backup data are provided. A first computing device identifies data to backup and stabilizes a frozen image of that data. Next, the frozen image is decomposed into physical storage addresses housing the data. The decomposed storage addresses are sent to a second computing device. The second computing device uses the storage addresses along with existing operating system I/O operations to backup the data to computer readable media.

Methods and systems to access storage objects are provided. A reference to a storage object is used to determine a storage stack level associated with the reference. If the storage stack level is not the lowest level of a storage stack, then the reference is translated to a next stack level reference and passed through to a next stack level associated with the stack. References are translated and passed through iteratively until the lowest level of the stack is reached, wherein an absolute reference to the storage object is obtained and propagated back to an original referencing module, thereby providing access to the storage object.

Methods, systems, and apparatus to interface with storage objects are provided. A storage object handle is provided on request and a storage object is mapped within a first storage environment. Further, a configuration identifier notifies client modules when the storage object's physical locations are altered in the first storage environment. API libraries provide client modules access to use the storage object, even when the client modules reside in a second storage environment.
