A microwave applicator for insertion into living body tissue for use in microwave coagulation and ablation treatments includes a microwave transmission line extending between an attachment end of the applicator and an antenna toward an insertion end of the applicator with an outer conductive sleeve forming an enclosed cooling fluid space around the transmission line. Circulation of cooling fluid is guided in the cooling fluid space by a guide sleeve. A fluid circulation system provides a plurality of fluid supply connectors and fluid return connectors which can be connected and used with any number of applicators between one and the number of the fluid supply connectors provided by the system. A portion of the applicator inserted into the tissue can stick to the tissue to stabilize the applicator during treatment. A warning marking on the applicator can be used during track ablation to prevent ablation of the patient skin tissue.

Microwave coagulation applicator and system

Three-dimensional X-ray imaging systems are described in this application. In particular, this application describes a 3D dental intra-oral imaging (3DIO) system that collects a series of 2D image projections. The 2D images are taken at different X-ray source positions located on a circle that defines the base of a regular geometric cone with the intraoral sensor located at the apex of that cone. The application also describes a method for making a three-dimensional image of an object, comprising providing an X-ray source on a motion gantry on a first side of an object to be imaged, positioning a stationary X-ray detector on an opposite side of the object from the X-ray source, moving the X-ray source in a substantially-continuous, circular motion to multiple positions on the first side of the object to create a conical geometry between the detector and the circular motion of the X-ray source, collecting multiple two-dimensional 2D images of the object when the X-ray source is located in the multiple positions, and reconstructing a three-dimensional 3D image using the multiple 2D images. These X-ray systems and methods offer a quick method of imaging an object, such as a tooth, while at the same time using a low radiation dose.

Three dimensional X-ray imaging system

Three dimensional x-ray imaging systems are described in this application. In particular, this application describes a 3D dental intra-oral imaging (3DIO) system that collects a series of 2D image projections. The x-ray imaging system comprises a housing, an x-ray source attached to a articulating or motion gantry configured to move the source within the housing to multiple positions, an x-ray detector array located on an opposite side of an object to be imaged from the x-ray source, where the detector array is synchronized with the x-ray source to capture 2D images of the object when the x-ray source is located in multiple imaging positions, and a processor configured to accept the 2D images and reconstruct a 3D image. The multiple imaging positions can be located on a plane substantially parallel to the x-ray detector array. Other embodiments are described.

X-ray devices and systems are described in this application. In particular, this application describes x-ray devices and systems that are used for three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction with uncertain geometry. The x-ray imaging system contains an arm configured to be moved around an object to be imaged, a light weight, low power x-ray source attached to the arm, an x-ray detector configured to move complimentary to the x-ray source to capture multiple two-dimensional (2D) images in a solid angle path outside of a planar arc, 3D position and orientation tracking devices configured to capture the geometric position and orientation of the x-ray source and detector when each 2D projection image is captured, and a processor configured to construct a three dimensional (3D) image from the multiple 2D images using a reconstruction algorithm. These x-ray systems are lighter, more maneuverable, and less expensive than convectional CT x-ray systems because the geometry tracking devices combined with the processor and algorithm enable e generation of 3D images without the complex, precise, heavy, and expensive mechanical system that fixes the precise geometry of each 2D projection image to a high degree of accuracy. Sterile barriers or sterile drapes that can be used with medical devices, including hand-held or self-supported X-ray equipment, are described in this application. In particular, this application describes sterile drapes that can be used with a medical device, the drape comprising a closed end portion, a middle portion with a size sufficient to enclose a part of the medical device being used near a patient, and an open end portion, the end portion configured to be closed by a user once the middle portion encloses the part of the medical device being used near a patient, wherein the sterile drape creates a sterile barrier around substantially the entire medical device once the open end is closed. Using the sterile drape allows the medical device, such as a hand-held or self-supported X-ray device, to be used in a medical procedure that requires a sterile field near the patient without disrupting that sterile field. Clamping devices used to assist with operating small, portable x-ray devices are described in this application. In particular, this application describes clamping devices used to connect portable X-ray devices to external support structures. The clamping devices contain a cradle configured to support a portion of a C-arm of a portable x-ray device, the cradle comprising a restraint configured to fit in an upper opening of the C-arm, a mounting plate configured to support a bottom portion of the portable x-ray device, a registration insert configured to mate with an opening in the bottom portion of the portable x-ray device, the registration insert also configured to move laterally along the mounting plate, a connecting member configured to move laterally along the mounting plate, and an attachment device configured to move the connecting member and the registration insert to attach the portable x-ray device to the cradle. Clamping device for a portable X-ray imaging device

Supporting devices for small and portable X-ray devices are described. In particular, this application describes supporting devices for portable X-ray devices containing a movable base unit with multiple legs with different lengths and heights configured so that the legs have a nestable configuration, an adjustable member extending from the mobile base unit so the adjustable member has an adjustable height, an extension arm connected to the adjustable member so the extension arm collapses toward and extends away from the adjustable member, and a connecting member connecting the extension arm with a portable x-ray device so the connecting member can rotate up to 360 degrees in the x, y, or z direction. The connecting member can also connect the extension arm with a portable x-ray device so the portable x-ray device is removable from the connecting member and capable of being operated independently by hand. Support stand for a portable X-ray imaging device

Clamping mechanisms that assist with the operation of small, portable x-ray devices are described. A support structure contains a clamping device for a portable X-ray device having a C-arm and a bottom containing a cradle configured to abut and support a C-arm of the portable x-ray device, a mounting plate configured to support a bottom portion of the portable x-ray device. The mounting plate has length members with ridges and a width member extending between the length members, a registration insert configured to mate with an opening in the portable x-ray device, and two clamps configured to secure the portable x-ray device to a cradle and the mounting plate. This clamping device allows the portable x-ray device to be quickly and easily attached to, and detached from, the support structure using only a single hand, while simultaneously preventing the portable x-ray device from accidentally being removed. Clamping mechanism for a portable X-ray imaging device

Lead-free radiation shielding material and processes for producing and using the same are described. The radiation shielding comprising a heavy metal component, such as bismuth, and a polymer component while also being optically transparent. The bismuth can be bonded to the polymer component or can be embedded within the matrix of the polymer component without being bonded to the polymer. As well, the bismuth can be nanoparticles that are contained within the matrix of the polymer component without being bonded to the polymer. The bismuth provides a stable, environmentally benign alternative to lead, while blocking the radiation and also being optically transparent. Other embodiments are described.

A microwave applicator for insertion into living body tissue for use in microwave coagulation and ablation treatments includes a microwave transmission line extending between an attachment end of the applicator and an antenna toward an insertion end of the applicator with an outer conductive sleeve forming an enclosed fluid space around the transmission line. A fluid circulation system circulates fluid in the fluid space. A portion of or all of the circulating fluid can be injected into tissue that surrounds the applicator body from approximately the proximal end of a desired heating zone produced by microwave energy radiated from the antenna along the applicator body toward the proximal end of the applicator to hydrate and wet the tissue outside the proximal end of the desired heating zone to reduce the drying of this tissue and limit extension of the heating and ablation zone proximally along the applicator body.

A microwave applicator for insertion into living body tissue for use in microwave coagulation and ablation treatments includes a microwave transmission line extending between an attachment end of the applicator and an antenna toward an insertion end of the applicator with an outer conductive sleeve forming an enclosed cooling fluid space around the transmission line. Circulation of cooling fluid is guided in the cooling fluid space by a guide sleeve. A temperature sensor senses the approximate temperature of cooling fluid to indicate cooling fluid is circulating. A multiplexing and power splitting circuit provides outputs tuned for one or for more than one applicator to be attached and detects the number of applicators and correct connection. A cadence sound generator can be used in conjunction with depth markings on the applicator to provide substantially constant withdrawal of the applicator from the treated tissue after treatment to provide track ablation.
