A first channel correlation is calculated for each pair of access terminals in a population of access terminals. A particular pair of access terminals is identified from the population of access terminals based on the first channel correlations. The population of access terminals includes a first access terminal of the particular pair of access terminals, a second access terminal of the particular pair of access terminals, and at least one remaining access terminal from the population of access terminals. A second channel correlation is calculated between the first access terminal and each of the at least one remaining access terminal. A third channel correlation is calculated between the second access terminal and each of the at least one remaining access terminal. One of the first access terminal and the second access terminal is selected to drop from service based on the second channel correlations and the third channel correlations.

Active user selection in massive MIMO

A central node of a MIMO system may transmit, to one or more communication terminals of the MIMO system, a long-duration downlink pilot signal carrying a pilot sequence having a first duration. The first duration may be equal to or greater than a quantity of antennas of the central node. The central node may receive retransmitted long-duration downlink pilot signals from the communication terminals. The central node may further transmit, to one or more communication terminals, a short-duration downlink pilot signal carrying a pilot sequence having a second duration. The second duration may be less than or equal to the quantity of antennas. The central node may receive a retransmitted short-duration downlink pilot signal from the one or more communication terminals. An uplink and downlink between the central node and one or more communication terminals may be estimated based on the received signals.

Frequency division duplex (FDD) MIMO backhaul for communication terminals

A central node may include a processor configured to empirically compute an approximation of power coefficients based on estimates of the channel coefficients such that a same one of the approximation of the power coefficient is assigned to each of a plurality of access terminals (ATs), and transmit components of a signal vector to associated access points (APs), the signal vector being based on at least the approximation of the power coefficient.

Apparatus configured to approximate a power coefficient in a cell-free massive MIMO wireless system and method of performing same

A communication method uses a distributed cell-free network of spatially independent service antennas. According to the method, pilot sequences are allocated to a user population of access terminals by an allocation procedure that imposes local relative orthogonality of pilot sequences. Channel coefficients for access terminals are determined by measuring allocated pilot sequences as received by each of the service antennas. In embodiments of the invention, the determination of channel coefficients is performed independently and the resulting channel coefficients are locally stored at the respective service antennas. At each service antenna, a processor independently uses locally stored channel coefficients to precode forward link signals or to at least partially decode reverse link signals.

System and method of wireless communication using large-scale antenna networks

A central node of a Massive Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) system includes a processor and a transceiver. The processor is configured to determine a number of active antennas to be used to serve users in at least one cell of the Massive MIMO system based on wireless network parameters for the Massive MIMO system. The transceiver is configured to transmit the determined number of active antennas to a Massive MIMO base station in the at least one cell.

Methods and apparatuses for configuring number of antennas for massive MIMO communication

In a method for transmitting data through a Massive MIMO backhaul system, a central node of the MIMO backhaul system transmits, to a small cell repeater terminal on the downlink, a downlink pilot signal carrying a set of pilot sequences that are mutually orthogonal in the frequency domain. Each pilot sequence in the set of pilot sequences corresponds to an antenna of an antenna array at the central node. The central node receives an uplink pilot signal carrying the set of pilot sequences transmitted by the small cell repeater terminal on the uplink, where the received uplink pilot signal is a frequency converted retransmission of the downlink pilot signal. The central node estimates at least one of an uplink channel and a downlink channel between the central node and the small cell repeater terminal based on the set of pilot sequences and the received uplink pilot signal.

Frequency division duplex (FDD) massive MIMO backhaul for repeater small cells

Systems and methods for assigning pilot sequences include randomly assigning pilot sequences to a population of access terminals. A first pilot sequence assigned to a worst performing access terminal of the population of access terminals is updated to a different pilot sequence that improves performance of the worst performing access terminal. A second pilot sequence assigned to a best performing access terminal of the population of access terminals is updated to another pilot sequence that reduces performance of the best performing access terminal.

Pilot assignment in cell free massive MIMO wireless systems

In one aspect, a compressive sampling encoder comprises matrix determination circuitry configured to determine a particular sampling matrix selected from a codebook comprising a plurality of sampling matrices. The compressive sampling encoder further comprises sampling circuitry coupled to the matrix determination circuitry and configured to apply the particular sampling matrix to a first signal to generate a second signal, and encryption circuitry configured to receive an identifier of the particular sampling matrix and to encrypt the identifier of the particular sampling matrix. The compressive sampling encoder provides at one or more outputs thereof the second signal and the encrypted identifier of the particular sampling matrix. Other aspects include a compressive sampling decoder, compressive sampling encoding and decoding methods, and associated computer program products.

Secure compressive sampling using codebook of sampling matrices

In one embodiment, a cellular wireless communications network, such as a large-scale antenna system (LSAS) network, having multiple base stations is logically divided into overlapping, virtual, truncated networks, where each base station functions as the master of a different truncated network, and each truncated network also has one or more base stations that function as slaves to that master base station. Each master base station generates estimated slow-fading coefficients and a slow-fading post-coding (SFP) vector based only on the wireless units current located within its truncated network. In particular, to generate the SFP vector, the master collects estimated slow-fading coefficients and estimated uplink data symbols from its slaves. The master uses the SFP vector to update its own estimated uplink data symbols for the wireless units currently located within its own cell.

Distributed generation of slow-fading post-coding vectors for LSAS communication networks and the like

In exemplary LSAS (large-scale antenna system) networks, uplink signals are processed to compensate for pilot contamination. Slow-fading coefficients are generated for terminals in the wireless network, and postcoding matrices are generated based on the slow-fading coefficients and terminal transmit power levels. Uplink signals are received from the terminals, and M-dimensional postcoding is performed to generate estimated uplink signals from the received uplink signals, where M is the number of antennas at a base station of the wireless network. The postcoding matrices are applied to the estimated uplink signals to compensate for pilot contamination. The improved technique used to generate postcoding matrices depends on whether the M-dimensional postcoding involves matched filtering or zero forcing. Postcoding matrices generated using improved techniques work better than those generated independent of the terminal transmit power levels by inverting slow-fading coefficient matrices for LSAS networks having intermediate numbers (&#x3e;10 and &#x3c;1000) of antennas per base station.

Wireless communication with suppression of inter-cell interference in large-scale antenna systems

Systems and methods for communicating data over a dual-tier wireless communication system are provided. A dual-tier wireless communication system comprises an upper tier cell-free large-scale antenna system including a plurality of service-antennas distributed in a designated coverage area for providing wireless access service to mobile terminals, and a lower tier of one or more concentrated large-scale antenna system arrays arranged within a plurality of cells of the designated coverage area for providing backhaul service to the plurality of service-antennas. The upper tier and the lower tier operate in disjoint frequency bands with respect to each other.

Dual-tier wireless communication system

A base station servicing a cell of a cellular network provides power control of a cell independent of any other cell in the network. For downlink power control, the base station transmits information at its full power and applies a downlink power control factor to each downlink channel to equalize downlink throughputs of the mobile terminals in the cell. For uplink power control, the base station transmits instructions to have the uplink channel with the worst channel condition to transmit at its full power and the other uplink channels to transmit at that same full power. Each transmission is scaled by a corresponding uplink power control factor such that uplink throughputs for the mobile terminals in the cell are equalized. The base station applies an approximation of a rigorous capacity lower bound algorithm using propagation channel conditions and channel parameters to calculate the uplink and downlink power control factors.

Non-cooperative power control for large-scale antenna systems

Methods and apparatuses for slow-fading precoding for multi-cell wireless systems are provided. At a base station of a cellular network in which a plurality of terminals are served, the base station serving pluralities of same-cell terminals and neighboring-cell terminals, and the cellular network including neighboring-cell base stations that serve respective pluralities of same-cell terminals and neighboring-cell terminals, a same-cell and one or more neighboring cells within the cellular network are selected, the same-cell and one or more neighboring cells comprising a truncated network. A plurality of slow-fading coefficients is obtained, each of the plurality of slow-fading coefficients being associated with channel state information for communication within the truncated network between a neighboring-cell base station and one of the respective same-cell terminals or neighboring-cell terminals, and a set of slow-fading precoding coefficients is generated for transmitting signals within the truncated network to same-cell terminals and neighboring-cell terminals based on the plurality of slow-fading coefficients.

Decentralized slow-fading precoding for multi-cell wireless systems

A new method is disclosed for providing wireless fixed access from an array of service antennas to a population of local terminals. In implementations, a service transceiver station (STS) performs beamform precoding using channel state information (CSI) obtained from transmissions by the local terminals, and the STS performs power allocation using slow fading coefficients which are static over the service antenna positions and over a frequency range spanning at least some carriers used for downlink transmission.

System and method of wireless fixed access using a multiple antenna array

A multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) communication system is configured to utilize a variable slot structure. The system includes multiple terminals and at least one base station configured to communicate with the terminals. The base station is operative to determine mobilities for respective ones of the terminals, to arrange the terminals into groups based on the determined mobilities, and to utilize at least first and second different slot structures for communicating with the terminals of at least respective first and second ones of the groups. The system may be, for example, a multi-user MIMO system in which the multiple terminals comprise autonomous single-antenna terminals.
