An improved vegetable protein adhesive binder which can be used in paper coating compositions at much lower levels than conventional vegetable protein adhesive binders while imparting to the paper coating composition rheological and other properties equivalent to conventional paper coating compositions containing higher levels of vegetable protein adhesive binders is prepared by forming an alkaline dispersion of a vegetable protein material and a polyacrylate, mixing the polyacrylate and the vegetable protein material at a temperature and for a time sufficient to achieve entanglement of the polyacrylate with the vegetable protein material, and co-precipitating the vegetable protein material and polyacrylate at the isoelectric point of the vegetable protein. The resulting vegetable protein material which is entangled with a polyacrylate can be advantageously employed as a vegetable protein adhesive binder in a paper coating composition comprising pigments, a polymer latex, and the vegetable protein adhesive binder.

A paper coating composition comprising a paper coating pigment and a protein adhesive. The protein adhesive contains a protein material and a dispersing agent, in an amount effective to adjust the pH of an aqueous solution containing the paper coating composition sufficiently to substantially solubilize the protein material, comprising a basic reagent containing a divalent cation and a cation binding agent. The cation binding agent is present in an amount effective to inhibit divalent cation induced gel formation and pigment flocculation.

A detergent composition and method may have the soil anti-redeposition properties significantly and unexpectedly improved by incorporating into the detergent composition an effective amount of an anti-redeposition agent. The anti-redeposition agent is a modified vegetable protein material such as a soy protein isolate which has been modified with an ionic monomer. Ionic monomers which have been found to be especially effective at improving the anti-redeposition properties of washing detergent compositions are cationic epoxide monomers, cationic acrylate monomers and cationic chlorohydrin monomers. Anionic or carboxylated soy protein derivatives have also been shown to be effective anti-redeposition agents.

A protein paper coating adhesive, and the coating composition using the protein adhesive, has increased room temperature stability and has improved whiteness. The adhesive is capable of producing high solids coatings compositions when the adhesive binder solutions are prepared either hot or cold.

A modified vegetable protein adhesive binder and a process for producing the same is disclosed wherein an alkaline protein dispersion is formed of a vegetable protein material and said dispersion is treated with a cationic monomer, preferably a cationic monomer selected from the group consisting of cationic epoxide monomers and cationic acrylate monomers, in an amount sufficient to modify the protein material. The modified vegetable protein adhesive binder has a greater affinity for pigments in a paper coating composition. This greater pigment affinity results in an improvement in the porosity of the final coating, thereby improving ink receptivity and printability on the coating surface.

A modified vegetable protein adhesive binder and a process for producing the same is disclosed wherein an alkaline protein dispersion is formed of the protein material and said dispersion is treated with a reducing agent in an amount sufficient to react with the disulfide bonds of the protein material in said dispersion. Initial treatment of the protein material with a reducing agent is followed by reaction of the treated dispersion with a carboxylic acid anhydride such as dicarboxylic acid anhydride, preferably phthalic anhydride in an amount sufficient to modify the protein material such that resultant alkali dispersions of the modified unhydrolyzed protein material have a relatively high viscosity but when used in paper coating compositions containing pigment and other materials such as latex produce relatively low and desirable coating viscosities. Improvements in pick strength, gloss, water holding and ink receptivity of coatings produced with the modified binder of the present invention is achieved.

A silicate containing adhesive is disclosed which is suitable for the production of laminated paper products comprising an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate together with soy polysaccharides in an amount effective to thicken the silicate solution, thereby providing a silicate adhesive which has good adhesive properties and may be used for bonding of two surfaces without excess penetration of the adhesive into either of the surfaces to be bonded.

A method of producing a paper coating composition containing a soy protein adhesive binder which is thermally sensitive or coagulates with heating is described wherein a soy protein isolate is solubilized to form a proteinaceous adhesive binder, said binder is mixed with a mineral pigment to provide a slurry having a solids level of at least about 36% by weight of the slurry, followed by control of the pH of the slurry to between about 5.7 to 6.2 and the addition of a salt selected from the group consisting of Zinc Acetate and Zinc Formate in amounts effective to cause heat coagulation of said slurry upon heating thereof. The coating is particularly used in cast coating processes, involving the application of heat to achieve uniform smoothness of the applied coating on paper.

Heat coagulable paper coating composition with a soy protein adhesive

A modified vegetable protein adhesive binder and process for its production is disclosed comprising; forming a slurry of a urease containing vegetable protein material having a proteinaceous solids content of 10 to 30% by weight and including in said slurry a quantity of water soluble silicate to minimize foaming during reaction of the protein material. Urea is then added which reacts with the urease to liberate ammonia from the urea and raise the pH of the slurry to above about 8. The slurry having an alkaline pH is reacted with an oxidizing agent to modify the protein, followed by heating of the modified protein at a temperature of 220-320.degree. F. The modified protein material is then cooled and dried to result in a protein adhesive binder with excellent rheological properties and good coating characteristics.
