An improved interferometric modulator permits the reduction in size of optical transmitters. In one embodiment, the optical modulator includes amplifiers or attentuators as phase modulators. In another embodiment, two outputs from a combiner are fed to the modulator, thus avoiding the requirement for an input splitter in the modulator. Light passing through the modulator may be both phase-shifted and amplified or attenuated by optical regulator sections located in the modulator. In another embodiment, the transmitter is included as a multiple-wavelength optical communications source, where individual current sources are provided to actuate a number of light sources feeding into the combiner, a processor controls the operation of each light source, and a modulator driver receives a data input signal to be encoded on the output of the source. By combining a number of modulators, a gray scale modulator may be fabricated for producing a gray scale output, rather than a conventional binary level output.

The thermo-optic behavior of an optical path over a range of temperatures &Dgr;T is controlled by determining a figure-of-merit (FOM) for the optical path and including in the path a body of crystalline material that enables the conditions specified by the FOM to be satisfied. The crystalline material is highly transparent at a wavelength &lgr; of radiation propagating in the path, and it has a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and a refractive index n such that the CTE and dn/dT are mutually adapted to satisfy the FOM over the range &Dgr;T. In one embodiment, the CTE and dn/dT of an etalon compensate one another so as to perform frequency discrimination that is essentially temperature insensitive over the range &Dgr;T. In a preferred embodiment of the optical etalon the crystalline material comprises LiCaAlF .

Using crystalline materials to control the thermo-optic behavior of an optical path

A stabilized single-longitudinal-mode laser where stabilization is performed through a pair of Bragg reflector mirrors slightly displaced in wavelength to either side of the longitudinal mode selected for operation. Transmitted signals through each Bragg reflector are detected and used in an electrical servo loop to control the relative positions of the longitudinal mode selected for operation and the peak wavelengths of the two Bragg reflector mirrors.

The pump resonator may be of a distributed feedback (DFB) or a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) type construction, and may be combined with signal reflection apparatus of either DFB or DBR type construction that provides oscillation of the desired laser output wavelength. If used without a signal reflection apparatus, the invention may be operated as a resonant pumped fiber amplifier. A resonant pumped laser may use a wavelength stabilized pump source to maximize pumping efficiency, the stabilization being provided by optical feedback.

A fiber laser or fiber amplifier uses resonant pumping of the gain medium by providing a pump resonator that establishes a resonator cavity at the pump wavelength which includes the pumped gain medium. The pump resonator may be of a distributed feedback (DFB) or a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) type construction, and may be combined with signal reflection apparatus of either DFB or DBR type construction that provides oscillation of the desired laser output wavelength. If used without a signal reflection apparatus, the invention may be operated as a resonant pumped fiber amplifier. Multiple resonators may also be pumped by a single pump source by locating each in a different branch of a multiple branch directional coupler. If the resonators are constructed to couple their outputs away from the coupler, a plurality of different laser outputs each having a different wavelength and equal output powers is provided. If the resonators couple their outputs toward the coupler, a plurality of discrete wavelengths each at the same power may be coupled onto a single waveguide. The pumping of the resonators may be from a single source the output of which is coupled into the single waveguide toward the directional coupler using a wavelength selective optical coupler that prevents optical energy outside the wavelength range of the pumping energy from reaching the pumping source.

A method and device for obtaining a desired phase of optical characteristic of a Fabry-Perot (FP) etalon using multiple optical detectors which, while passively aligned at various positions relative to an incident light beam, detect different phases of light signal emerging from the FP etalon. An FP etalon and optical detector array constructed in accordance with the present invention may be used as a frequency discriminator in an optical system where the FP etalon optical characteristic is required to have a particular phase.

Method and device for obtaining a desired phase of optical characteristic of a fabry-perot etalon

An interferometer having semiconductor optical amplifiers in one or both arms of the interferometer converts information from a first wavelength to another predetermined wavelength. The original data signal (at the first wavelength) is coupled into the interferometer in such a way that it is confined to propagate, either co-directionally or contra-directionally, in only one arm of the interferometer together with the lightwave signal at the predetermined wavelength. This arm includes the semiconductor optical amplifier. In this way, the original data signal is utilized effectively to maximize the interference effect, which is required for wavelength conversion, while minimizing the problems associated with simultaneously saturating amplifiers in the interferometer structure.

The output signals from each laser stage may be coupled out of the series arrangement with wavelength selective optical couplers, each associated with a different laser stage.

The invention is directed to an optical transmission system employing an electro-absorption modulator operative that absorbs energy from light received from a source of light and modulates the received light with information signals received from a source of information and outputs the modulated light signal to an optical transmission line, and employing apparatus that controls the level of light signals provided by the source as a function of a control signal having a level proportional to the level of the absorbed energy.

Automatic power control for a wavelength selective EML module

A waveguide DBR laser or waveguide DBR laser array may be comprised of a semiconductor gain element, or a series of semiconductor gain elements, in combination with a waveguide grating functioning as a resonant cavity end reflector for lasing operation comprising either an optical fiber having a fiber grating (fiber DBR laser) or a planar waveguide (planar waveguide DBR laser). The gain element may be comprised of a laser diode which has high efficient AR coating on its front facet so that it functions as a modulated gain element in a resonant cavity established between its rear HR facet and the grating formed in the external waveguide. Disclosed are ways to form this resonant cavity so that gain element modulation rates can be carried out in excess of 2 Gb/sec with suppression of longitudinal mode hops and/or with trimming to compensate for wavelength changes, rendering the waveguide DBR laser or waveguide DBR laser array highly suitable for WDM transmitter, dense WDM transmission systems and other communications applications.

Thermal compensators for waveguide DBR laser sources

A system and associated method for determining if a channel signal carried by a discrete wavelength channel is properly centered for that wavelength channel. A signal generator is provided that superimposes a secondary signal over the original signal in a signal channel. Tone detectors are provided at a point after the superimposition of the secondary signal. The tone detectors detect the superimposed tone signal at wavelengths that are longer and/or shorter than the wavelength assigned to the wavelength channel. By measuring the degree of balance between wavelengths longer than the wavelength assigned to the wavelength channel and the wavelengths shorter than the wavelength assigned to the wavelength channel, it can be determined if the original signal is centered for that wavelength channel. If a predetermined degree of balance is not obtained, the original signal for the wavelength channel can be corrected or can be recognized as being non-compliant.

Method and apparatus for monitoring and correcting individual wavelength

An apparatus and technique for providing isolation for a signal source utilizing two or more modulators is described. In particular, the apparatus generates a timed sequence of 'open gates' that are synchronized to the data signal which permit transmission in a forward direction, and which attenuate a reverse direction signal. Another embodiment attenuates primarily reflected light signals by utilizing a passive waveguide and a modulator. The passive waveguide provides a propagation delay such that signals reflected from its end facet are attenuated by the modulator. The apparatus is suitable for use as an isolator for a light source in a high-speed optical fiber data transmission system.

Optical modulators as monolithically integrated optical isolators

A technique is disclosed for utilizing direct-write electron-beam photolithography and holographic optical exposure to form gratings in optoelectronic structures. The direct-write e-beam process is used to form rectangular grating teeth in a mask substrate, where the mask is then used as a phase mask to transfer the pattern to the optoelectronic device. Advantageously, the utilization of a direct write e-beam technique to form the grating pattern on the photomask allows for the formation of any desired number and location of abrupt phase shifts, multiple grating pitches, alignment fiducials, and any other desired features. Therefore, a single exposure of the direct write e-beam mask allows for a plurality of different grating patterns to be simultaneously printed.
