Macrocyclic polyester oligomer compositions comprising alkylene isophthalate or terephthalate units or the like are prepared by the reaction of a diol with a diacid chloride in the presence of at least one amine characterized by substantially no steric hindrance around the basic nitrogen atom. The reaction is conducted under substantially anhydrous conditions and at a temperature from about -25.degree. to about +25.degree. C. The resulting macrocyclic oligomers may be converted to linear polyesters by contact with catalysts including basic reagents, stannous alkoxides, organotin compounds, titanate esters and metal acetylacetonates.

A process for the redistribution of an organic polycarbonate composition. The process involves melt equilibrating a starting polycarbonate composition (which may be a single polycarbonate or a mixture of polycarbonates, and may be or include recycled polycarbonate) having an initial weight average molecular weight in the presence of a carbonate redistribution catalyst and in the absence of branching agents, under conditions such that a redistributed polycarbonate composition is formed having a weight average molecular weight different from, and typically lower than, the initial weight.

The crystallinity of polyesters prepared from macrocyclic poly(1,4-butylene terephthalate) oligomers is reduced and cracking of molded parts suppressed by the incorporation therein of at least one other linear or macrocyclic poly(alkylene dicarboxylate) oligomer, such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) or poly(1,4-butylene isophthalate). It is preferably employed in macrocyclic form. The resulting compositions can be combined with inert fillers and polymerized.

The use of polyester oligomer mixtures is preferred, and they may be present in liquid or solid form. Block polyphenylene ether-polycarbonates are prepared by blending a mixture of at least one polyphenylene ether wherein all phenolic end groups are in the free phenol form; at least one cyclic polycarbonate oligomer, preferably an oligomer mixture; and a catalyst for conversion of cyclic polycarbonates to linear polycarbonates; and heating said mixture to polymerization temperature. The preferred catalysts are phenoxides, salts of polycarbonate oligomers and tetraphenylborate salts. Substituted phenols and phenyl carbonates derived therefrom, such as 2,4-dinitrophenol and 2,4-dinitrophenyl carbonate, are employed to inhibit the formation of linear polycarbonates from cyclic polycarbonate oligomers. When polymerization is effected by basic polycarbonate formation catalysts, the phenols or phenyl carbonates decrease reaction rate.

When polymerization is effected by basic polycarbonate formation catalysts, the Lewis acids can act as reaction rate accelerators or inhibitors depending on reaction parameters.

Cyclic polycarbonate mixtures containing units derived from spirobiindane bisphenols, preferably 6,6'-dihydroxy-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylspirobiindane are prepared from the corresponding bischloroformates or mixtures thereof with bisphenols. They may be homopolymeric or copolymeric; cyclic oligomer mixtures are preferred. Such oligomers may be converted to linear polycarbonates having high glass transition temperatures.

Copolycarbonates are prepared by ring-opening cyclic polycarbonate oligomers with various nucleophilic polymers. The latter include 'living' anionic vinyl polymers; polymers such as polyphenylene ethers or hydroxyaryl-terminated polyimides which contain deprotonated hydroxy or carboxy groups; polymers containing neutral nucleophilic moieties, such as secondary amine-terminated polyimides, polyethersulfones and polyetherketones; and anionic polymers of ring-opened compounds such as cyclic polysiloxanes, lactams and lactones.
