A method is provided for distributing video content by a network operator. The method includes receiving media streams including programs having a prescribed duration; assigning a traffic index for each program contained within the media streams, each traffic index reflecting the volume of traffic expected to be associated with the program by client devices; selecting a predetermined number of programs to provide to client devices based at least in part on the traffic index for each program; encoding said selected program as individual adaptive bitrate streams; and streaming said encoded individual adaptive bitrate streams to client devices over the network as a managed bundle, wherein the adaptive bitrate streams in the bundle are multicast simultaneously to the client devices.

Systems and methods for multicast delivery of a managed bundle in service provider networks

A method () for a system () for delivering a content offering () containing one or more advertisements () includes identifying one or more triggers () indicating that one or more advertisement avails () occur in the content offering. After advertisements are obtained, portions () of the advertisements are multiplexed with portions () of the content offering occurring between a trigger and a corresponding advertising avail. Systems and methods are provided for minimizing cable and off-air signal detection on separate cable and off-air input jacks in a set-top terminal with two or more tuners. The systems and methods employ logic to progress through different scan configurations with different input jack/signal detection assignments to minimize signal detection delay. Tuners are pooled for a given input jack/signal assignment, scanned frequencies are queued and carried to the next scan configuration, and user input is employed, whenever possible. The systems and methods are of particular value for retail applications, where users may install cable, off-air, or both sources incorrectly to their set-top terminal's cable and off-air input jacks.

An interactive video menu system provides an economical method for the storage, transmission, and reception of data necessary for interactive video sessions, which allows high-resolution images to be broadcast to end users along with all the control information necessary to display and navigate through these images. A simple interpretive script is run on the end user's device which traps the broadcast information and allows rapid response time and control of the interactive session without requiring expensive high-bandwidth facilities. Buffer equalized coding is used so that still, picture-in-a-still; and moving video images can be compressed at rates below those typically used with the MPEG-2 standard and continuously transmitted as video backgrounds in a seamless loop saving bandwidth without degradation in video quality. Data that instructs the end-user device how to display the video backgrounds and what foreground text to overlay on the video backgrounds is broadcast simultaneously in the bit stream This creates the appearance of a dedicated connection to the server while minimizing bandwidth and equipment cost and complexity.
