Disclosed is a metal wood club head with a body having a crown a sole, a skirt and a strike face. The sole has a first cavity located rearwards and towards the heel of the club head and a second cavity located rearwards towards the toe of the club head and approximately opposite of the first cavity. The two cavities define a relatively flat ridge or land area extending from the front of the sole rearwards which forms a beam-like stiffening structure. A backweight may be attached to the body portion to redistribute mass more rearwardly in the club head and directly behind the stiffening ridge. The redistribution of the mass rearwards increases the dynamic loft and moment of inertia of the club head and its position behind the stiffening ridge enhances energy transfer upon striking of a ball. The disclosed club head is thus provided with an increased moment of inertia to resist rotation and enhanced striking efficiency without an increase in club volume.

Each shaft includes a reverse taper section disposed a distance from the tip section on each shaft. The distance of the reverse taper section varies along a number of shafts as the shaft length decreases. A golf club shaft is disclosed. The shaft includes a tip section, lower section, and an upper section. The tip section connects with a golf club head. The lower section includes a tapered section and a reverse taper section. The tapered section extends from the tip section. The tapered section increases in diameter in a direction away from the tip section. The reverse taper section extends between the tapered section and the upper section. The reverse taper section has a diameter that decreases in a direction away from the tip section. The shaft further includes a resilient plug wedged inside the shaft. The plug extends along the reverse taper section, the plug being formed from a sound absorbing material.

A golf club head, specifically a wood for use on the fairway or in trouble spots, such as sand traps, hard pan, or in the rough. The wood incorporates a metal sole plate which comprises a major portion of the lower face of the head and at least half of the total weight of the head. The sole plate has a pair of spaced parallel runners extending well below the plate and being of substantial cross section, the runners having inclined leading faces to ride or skid on the ground surface with minimum penetration. The weight and shape of the sole plate provides a low center of mass in the head, with the weight distributed over the lower face.
