A system for controlling a positioning unit in a motor vehicle includes various control units that influence the positioning unit coupled thereto. A drive slip control and an automatic transmission control both supply a control signal. Yet another control signal is dependent upon a driver request signal. For a period of time, the control signal from the automatic transmission control takes precedence over the other control signals.

The invention is directed to a system for electronically controlling (open loop and/or closed loop) an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle. By means of at least one measuring unit at least one signal is generated representing the position of a power-determining component and the measuring unit comprises several sensors. The measuring unit is associated with a power-determining component of the vehicle such as a throttle flap or the control rod and/or accelerator pedal. The sensors are checked with respect to their functional capability by comparing the signal values generated by the sensors to each other with respect to a pregiven tolerance range. When a fault of one or more of the sensors is detected, then that sensor or those sensors which is or are unaffected can be determined.

The invention is directed to an apparatus for influencing control quantities of an internal combustion engine by means of which vibrations of the entire vehicle in the lower engine speed range, particularly at idling, are to be eliminated. In order to damp jerking movements resulting at different power transmissions, a signal corresponding to the actual rotary speed of the engine is fed back into an electronic regulating circuit. Preferably, the feedback path includes a phase shifter. It is essential that the regulating action of the rotary speed be not delayed by the phase turning shifter. For this purpose, the electronic regulating circuit includes a PI stage and the fed back signal is applied to the regulating circuit only after its I-constituent has become effective.

A method and an apparatus are proposed for controlling the quantity of exhaust gas recirculated from the exhaust gas system of an internal combustion engine to its intake side. The aspirated air quantity is compared with a set-point value formed in accordance with load and rpm, and if the deviation is greater than a minimum amount, control pulses for two magnetic valves are formed, which are triggered alternatively depending upon the polarity of the deviation and which further cause pressure to be delivered from two pressure sources having different pressure levels into the work chamber of a pneumatically functioning adjusting member of a dosing valve for exhaust gas recirculation. The opening duration of a given valve is dependent on the magnitude of the deviation from the set-point, and the valve remains completely open until a counteracting correction takes place if the deviation from the set-point exceeds a predetermined maximum amount. The control pulses formed in the range between a minimum and a maximum deviation from the set-point are carried further to the magnetic valves after the elapse of a predetermined waiting period (T.sub.W). The waiting period may be made dependent on rpm.

Method and apparatus for controlling recirculated quantities of exhaust

A fuel control system for an internal combustion engine with correction for optimum values based on a variety of factors. Characteristic engine data is stored in preferably digital memories with capabilities for interpolation. Upon addressing the engine data fields with input signals related to current operational variables, for example the accelerator pedal position, the control system derives therefrom a nominal air flow rate which is used as the reference value in a control loop that sets the amount of recycled exhaust gas and the fresh air flow. As the actual air flow rate approaches the reference value, the fuel flow is adjusted to insure correct mixtures at all times. In another embodiment, the fuel is supplied on demand but cannot exceed a maximum value except under special override conditions. Several other embodiments and variants are presented.

Method and apparatus for fuel metering in internal combustion engines

An apparatus for damping bounce-induced oscillations in an internal combustion engine having a fuel metering control for supplying fuel to the engine in accordance with various operational signals, which includes an engine speed sensor for generating an rpm signal proportional to the engine rpm, a signal differentiation circuit for producing an rpm differential signal from the rpm signal, and a phase-shifting circuit, connected to receive the rpm differential signal, for supplying to the fuel metering control a bounce damping signal which is proportional to the rpm differential signal and which is phase-displaced with respect to the rpm differential signal so that the fuel metering control supplies fuel to the engine to countercontrol the bounce-induced oscillations of the engine. In a preferred embodiment, the phase-shifting circuit includes a controllable dead time element for varying the phase displacement in accordance with the bounce frequency so as to compensate for the total system transit time of the apparatus, to thus effect countercontrolling of the bounce oscillations which is correctly phased and correct in frequency.
