A flat glass is provided that exhibits high transmittance to electromagnetic radiation in a range of wavelengths from 200 nm to 1500 nm. The transmittance for the flat glass having a thickness of 1 mm is 20% or more at a wavelength of 254 nm, 82% or more at a wavelength of 300 nm, 90% or more at a wavelength of 350 nm, 92% or more at a wavelength of 546 nm, 92.5% or more at a wavelength of 1400 nm, 91.5% or more in a wavelength range from 380 nm to 780 nm, and 92.5% or more in a wavelength range from 780 nm to 1500 nm.

Flat glass, method for producing same, and use thereof

A light guide plate for guiding of visible light for the backlighting of a liquid crystal display is provided. The light guide plate has two parallel lateral faces and at least one edge face, which serves preferably as a light input face. The light guide plate is a glass that contains BOand SiOas components, wherein the total content of BOand SiOis at least 70 weight percent and the BOcontent is greater than 10%. The total content of metal oxide of divalent metals in the composition of the glass is less than 3 weight percent. AlOis contained between 1 weight percent and 5 weight percent in the composition.

The method of making borosilicate glass with a surface having reactive SiOH groups on it includes preparing a borosilicate glass melt and dissolving at least 30 mMol per liter of water in the borosilicate glass melt. The borosilicate glass contains from 70 to 87 percent by weight, SiO; from 7 to 15 percent by weight, BO; from 0 to 8 percent by weight, AlO; from 0 to 8 percent by weight, NaO and from 0 to 8 percent by weight of KO. The borosilicate glass with the easily modified reactive surface can be used as a substrate for chemically covalent immobilization of reactive substances. This substrate can be used to make a biochemical chip, such as a DNA or gene chip, or dirt-proof window glass.

The invention relates to an alkali-free aluminoboro-silicate glass which has the following composition (in % by weight, based on oxide): SiO >60-65; B O 6.5-9.5; Al O 14-21; MgO 1-8; CaO 1-6; SrO 1-9; BaO 0.1-3.5; with MgO&plus;CaO&plus;SrO&plus;BaO 8-16; ZrO 0.1-1.5; SnO 0.1-1; TiO 0.1-1; CeO 0.01-1. The glass is particularly suitable for use as a substrate glass in display technology.

Alkali-free aluminoborosilicate glass, its use and process for its preparation

A medical handpiece for transmitting energy from a laser beam into biological tissue. An optical fiber for conveying the laser beam to the handpiece and a light guide for radiating the laser energy into the tissue are arranged in a base body. Means are provided for aligning the optical axis of the light guide in relation to the optical axis of the fiber and means for aligning the optical axis of the light guide in relation to the base body are also provided. The light guide can be displaced in an axial direction in relation to the base body and the alignment can be set according to the direction of displacement or maintained. The light guide is easy to replace and the device is easy to clean in accordance with all hygiene requirements.

A method for photoablation in the field of dermatological medicine and to an arrangement for carrying out this method is disclosed in which the laser radiation and the outlet channel for the laser radiation are directed to a portion of skin to be treated during the treatment and the outlet opening is positioned near the treatment area. In this method, the area to be treated is subjected to a suction vacuum during treatment over its entire extent. In particular, the outlet opening communicates with a device for generating a vacuum.

Described is an alkali-free aluminoborosilicate glass with a viscosity of 10.sup.13 dPas at a temperature of above 700.degree.0 C., a processing temperature V.sub.A of less than 1220.degree.0 C., and very good chemical stability, which can be produced in a float unit and has the following composition, in % by weight based on oxide:

An alkali-free aluminoborosilicate glass preferably with a thermal expansion .alpha..sub.20/300 of about 3.7 .times.10.sup.-6 /K, an annealing temperature OKP of above 700.degree. C., a treatment temperature V.sub.A of less than 1220.degree. C., and very good chemical stability, which can be produced in a float unit and has the following composition (in % by weight based on oxide): SiO.sub.2 52-62; B.sub.2 O.sub.3 4-14; Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 12-20; MgO 0-8; CaO 4-11; BaO 0-2; ZnO 2-8; ZrO.sub.2 0-2; SnO.sub.2 0-2. The ratio of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 /B.sub.2 O.sub.3 is preferably equal to or greater than 3. The glass is especially suitable for use in display technology.

The invention relates to brownish, brown to black colored borosilicate glasses which have stepped grades of transmission in the NIR range or are fully non-transmitting. The borosilicate glass, primarily the borosilicate glass 3.3, is melted with defined additives of titanium carbide and/or metallic silicon. The glasses produced in accordance with the invention are to be used as filters, glass vessels and/or decorative colored glass in construction and for decorating because of their absorption/transmission characteristics. On the other hand, the glasses produced in accordance with the invention can also be used as absorbers in solar technology when the light transmissibility in the NIR/IR range is sufficiently low.

Colored borosilicate glass

The invention relates to gray, bluish, blue to black colored borosilicate glasses which have a stepped transmission grade in the near infrared range or are fully non-transmitting. The borosilicate glass with defined additions of titanium dioxide is melted together with a reduction agent such as Si(metallic). The glasses produced in accordance with the invention are used as filters because of their absorption/transmission characteristic or, if the light transmissibility in the near infrared/infrared ranges is sufficiently low, the glasses can also be used as absorbers in solar technology, as a glass used in areas of the home and/or as decorative colored glass in construction and for decorating.

Reducing melt borosilicate glass having a UV transmittance of at least 85% for ultraviolet radiation having a wavelength of 254 nm for a sample thickness of 1 mm and a water-resistance of less than 100 micrograms, advantageously less than 62 micrograms, Na.sub.2 O per gram of glass powder according to ISO 719 and a thermal expansion coefficient .alpha..sub.20/300 of from 5 to 6.times.10.sup.-6 K.sup.-1 and comprising from 58 to 65% by weight SiO.sub.2, from 18 to 20.5% by weight B.sub.2 O.sub.3, from 8.1 to 10.4% by weight Al.sub.2O.sub.3, from 0 to 1% by weight CaO, from 0 to 2% by weight BaO, from 0 to 2% by weight SrO, from 0 to 1.5% by weight Li.sub.2 O, from 5.5 to 8.5% by weight Na.sub.2 O, from 0 to 3% by weight K.sub.2 O and from 0 to 2% by weight fluorine. The sum total content of all of the alkali metal oxides present in the glass is not greater than 10% and the sum total content of the CaO, BaO and SrO is not greater than 3% and the molar ratio of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 : Na.sub.2 O is from 0.6 to 1. The glass is particularly suitable for EPROM windows, UV lamps, photomultipliers, spectrophotometers under difficult climatic conditions and protective tubes for UV lamps immersed in water in waste water treatment operations.
