A method and a corresponding apparatus for carrying out a reference measurement on a sensor of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle during an overrun phase of the internal combustion engine, in order to detect measurement errors of the sensor. Provision is made that future overrun phases of the internal combustion engine, and the duration of the overrun phases, are predicted on the basis of route data; and that a reference measurement on the sensor is carried out only when the predicted duration of the overrun phase is long enough to carry out the reference measurement completely. With the method and apparatus presented, the functioning of sensors can be monitored during an overrun phase of a motor vehicle having an internal combustion engine.

Method and apparatus for carrying out a reference measurement on a sensor of an internal combustion engine

A method for operating an internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine has at least one cylinder, to which are connected an intake manifold having an air mass sensor, an exhaust pipe having a &#x3bb;-sensor and an exhaust gas recirculation line having an exhaust gas recirculation valve. The air mass sensor generates an air mass sensor signal. The &#x3bb;-sensor generates a &#x3bb;-sensor signal. The exhaust gas recirculation valve is adjusted by a control signal. A setpoint injection quantity is formed and the control signal of the exhaust gas recirculation valve is formed as a function of the air mass sensor signal. An air mass replacement signal for the air mass sensor signal is formed as a function of the &#x3bb;-sensor signal and the setpoint injection quantity. In the case of a faulty air mass sensor signal, the control signal is formed as a function of the air mass replacement signal.

Method for operating an internal combustion engine

The invention concerns a procedure and a device for an adaptation of a dynamic model of an exhaust gas probe, which is a component of an exhaust pipe of a combustion engine and with which a lambda value is determined for regulating an air-fuel composition, whereby a simulated lambda value is calculated parallel to that in a control unit or in a diagnosing unit of the combustion engine and an application function uses the simulated and the measured lambda value. According to the invention it is thereby provided that a jump behavior of the exhaust gas probe is determined during a running vehicle operation by evaluating a signal change at a stimulation of the system and that the dynamic model of the exhaust gas probe is adapted with the aid of these results.
