A method of recovering phosphoric acid from process water includes directing a process water stream having a pH and a first concentration of phosphoric acid and at least one salt into a vessel, contacting the process water stream with a sorption agent in the vessel, the sorption agent adsorbing phosphoric acid from the process water, withdrawing a first effluent including a first concentration of the at least one salt and a second concentration of phosphoric acid from the vessel, and contacting the sorption agent including the phosphoric acid with water, at least a portion of the phosphoric acid desorbing from the ion exchange media into the water to form a second effluent having a third concentration of phosphoric acid.

This invention relates to ion exchange resins that have a reduced amount of physically adsorbed organic compounds, as well as methods of producing and using such resins. In particular, the amount of extractable total organic carbon on the resins may be less than about 200 parts per trillion by wet weight, as measured using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. This invention also relates to methods of treating water that use such resins.

The invention includes an operating method for the continuous purification of a liquid utilizing either single or dual ion exchange vessels, each vessel being physically divided into one or more discrete of ion exchange zones, each zone having an inlet and an outlet. A valving means at the inlet and outlet of each ion exchange zone provides communication between adjacent ion exchange zones as well as to feed, product, water and regenerant chemical streams. In one aspect of this invention a first vessel contains a discrete plurality of cation exchange zones and a second vessel contains a discrete plurality of anion exchange zones. In another aspect of this invention, a single vessel contains a plurality of discrete cation exchange zones and a plurality of discrete anion exchange zones. In another aspect of the invention, each ion exchange zone is contained within a single vessel.
