A luminescent composition includes a host matrix sensitized by Ceand showing emission in the ultraviolet range. Typical host matrices include fluorides, sulphates, and phosphates, in particular A(YLuLa)F, A(YLuLa)F, BaCa(YLuLa)F, and Ba(YLuLa)F, wherein A=Li, Na, K, Rb, or Cs. One or more of these luminescent compositions may be applied as a ceramic or single crystalline converter for CT, PET or SPECT scanners, or as a luminescent powder layer for x-ray intensifying screens.

In the luminescent screen of a flourescent lamp an organic europium compound is incorporated for converting mercury radiation between 350 nm and 450 nm into red light. The organic europium compound is diluted in an organic polymer. When the fluorescent lamp is dimmed its colour point shifts into the red similar to incandescent lamps and not into the blue.

A light-emitting device comprising a UV-diode with a primary emission of 300 nm.ltoreq..lambda..ltoreq.370 nm and a phosphor layer including a combination of a blue-emitting phosphor having an emission band, with 430 nm.ltoreq..lambda..ltoreq.490 nm, a green-emitting phosphor having an emission band, with 520 nm.ltoreq..lambda..ltoreq.570 nm and a red-emitting phosphor having an emission band, with 590 nm.ltoreq..lambda..ltoreq.630 nm, emits high-quality white light. The color-rendering index CRI is approximately 90 at a color temperature of 4000 K. The color rendition depends only on the composition of the three phosphors, not on the relation between converted and non-converted light, and hence can be readily controlled and regulated.
