In order to provide a method for the three-dimensional representation of a digital roadmap, which makes greater use of areas near the horizon of the visual representation and provides the user with supplementary information, a provision is made to draw in these areas navigation or orientation-related information as image elements.

A navigational device for guiding a vehicle within a network of traffic routes provides, for guidance purposes, a guide object that is shown in relation to the traffic route in such a manner that the guide object's movement represents driving maneuvers to be performed by the driver. The driver emulates the driving maneuvers shown to him/her and thus follows the previously calculated route.

In order to provide a method that uses the region of a visual depiction of a digital road map in the vicinity of and above the horizon to convey to the user an enhanced impression of depth, provision is made that a plurality of image objects are drawn in the region of the horizon and thereabove, the individual image objects shifting with respect to one another upon a change in the position or travel direction of the vehicle.

When requesting a page frame from the digital map base, data of geographical elements which extend beyond the edge of the page frame is transferred in such a manner that data pertaining to these geographical elements located outside of the requested page frame is also compiled and transferred.

A method, operating unit, navigation system and interface for displaying a predetermined section of a digital map database, which represents a real geographic area, on a display device are described. The digital map database contains data representing various geographic elements. An attribute, which defines a display priority, is assigned to each geographic element. An evaluation is then performed to determine whether or not particular geographic elements in the predetermined section to be displayed should or should not be visible on the display device. A particular geographic element is made visible on the display device when it is located in the predetermined section and when its display-priority-determining attribute satisfies certain selection criteria or selection rules. This method prevents display of too many geographic elements, which would otherwise make the display congested thus producing an unclear display.
