A co-planar waveguide interferometric electro-optic modulator that reduces the bias point sensitivity of the modulator to ambient temperature and to applied RF is described. The modulator includes a first and second waveguide that are formed in an electro-optic substrate. A RF electrode is positioned on the electro-optic substrate between the first and the second waveguide. A ground electrode that may include a slot is positioned proximate to the second waveguide. A guard ground electrode is positioned proximate to the first waveguide to sink heat from the RF electrode and may also balance the thermal stress in the two waveguides. A dielectric material may also be positioned proximate to the first waveguide to balance the thermal stress in the two waveguides.

Electro-optic modulator with enhanced bias stability

An optical pulse generator having a high order transfer function that comprises a first and a second nested interferometric modulator, each modulator comprising an optical input, an electrical input, a first arm, a second arm and an optical output. The second interferometric modulator is optically coupled into the second arm of the first interferometric modulator. The optical output of the first interferometric modulator generates pulses at a repetition rate that is proportional to a multiple of a frequency of an electrical signal applied to the electrical input of at least one of the first and second interferometric modulator and at a duty cycle that is inversely proportional to the order of the transfer function of the optical pulse generator. The multiple may be any integer equal to or greater than one.

Optical pulse generation using a high order function waveguide interferometer

A method for making a fiber-optic bundle collimator assembly, comprising steps of assembling side by side a multiplicity of first bodies of cylindrical configuration and equal diameter and applying uniform compressive force to the first bodies to force the first bodies into a predictable hexagonal pattern of minimum diameter. Additional bodies of cylindrical configuration and having diameters equal to the diameters of the first bodies are inserted on each of the sides of the bundle of first bodies with each of the additional bodies abutting two of the first bodies. A plurality of the first bodies is then removed from the bundle. Each of the removed first bodies is replaced with a pair of cylindrically-shaped second bodies having diameters equal to the diameters of the first bodies, with one of the pair protruding from the bundle on a first face thereof and another of the pair protruding from the bundle on a second face thereof. A clamp is applied to exposed portions of the second bodies at one of the bundle first and second faces, to force the second bodies into an attitude parallel to each other, the second bodies causing the first bodies to align parallel to the second bodies and parallel to each other. An outer ring of the first bodies is locked in place and a second plurality of first bodies is removed from the bundle. A plurality of optical fiber bearing ferrules is inserted in the place of the removed first bodies.

Method for making fiber-optic bundle collimator assembly

A multi-channel fiber optic rotatable interconnection system for coupling tical signals from a plurality of diverse optical signal sources at a source location to a like plurality of optical signal receivers at a destination location rotatable relative to each other. The interconnection system comprises an input fiber and an output fibber both of which are comprised of step-index multi-mode optical fibers. The input fiber includes an input end which receives optical signals from the optical signal sources, the fiber forming a composite optical signal therefrom. The optical signal sources are positioned at diverse polar angles relative to the input end of the input fiber to provide a plurality of optical transmission modes having minimal crosstalk, so that the composite optical signal can be resolved into its component optical signals at the destination. A rotatable coupler is positioned co-axially between the input fiber and the output fiber thereby no allow the input fiber and the output fiber to rotate axially relative to each other. The rotatable coupler couples the composite optical signal from the input fiber to the output fiber. A signal detection arrangement positioned axially at the output end of the output fiber receives optical signals therefrom and separates it into its component optical signals for coupling to the receivers.

Multi-channel fiber optic rotatable interconnection system

A mode transition matrix measuring system for nondestructively calculating mode-dependent losses and coupling of a multi-mode, graded-index, connectorized, passive fiber optic component, the mode transition matrix measuring system comprising mode selective launcher means having a plurality of optical paths with varying launch conditions, input-output optic means having at least one reference optical path and at least one optical path for the passive fiber optic component under test, mode selective detection means having a plurality of optical paths with a variety of mode filters, and means for data storage and matrix calculation, wherein the mode transition matrix and the modal power vector are calculated using measurements of the optical power propagated through optical courses comprising the optical paths.
