A web-fed press includes at least two printing units and at least one drier for drying at least one printing-material web which is moved through the at least two printing units and printed on at least one side with at least one offset printing ink at each of the printing units. The printing-material web is dried at least after the first printing unit and before the second printing unit.

Web-fed rotary press and method for operating it

An apparatus and method for reducing oscillations in a web-fed rotary press are disclosed. The apparatus includes a form cylinder of a web-fed rotary press, having at least one clamping device for fastening at least one printing plate on the form cylinder. The clamping device has at least one clamping element which is positioned in a clamping channel. As seen in a circumferential direction, the clamping channel of the form cylinder has an effective clamping-channel width of at most 7 mm.

Apparatus and method for reducing oscillations in a web-fed rotary press

The rubber-blanket plate comprising a carrier plate () on which functional layers () are arranged. The functional layers () include a covering layer (), a woven-fabric layer () and a compressible layer (). At the two ends of the rubber-blanket plate (FIG.), only the ends of the covering layer () extend to the carrier plate (), whereas the functional layers end before that. As a result, effective protection of the functional layers () is attained, and it is possible to use a relatively narrow channel (FIG.) in the printing press cylinder upon which the rubber-blanket plate is mounted. Alternatively, all of the functional layers can extend to the end of the carrier plate.

A printing machine including multiple interactively arranged printing cylinders, at least some of which are directly-driven by induction motors. The induction motors have rotors that are connected to the cylinder mantle of the printing cylinder, and stators directly or indirectly connected to the side walls of a printing unit along substantially rigid axes, so that the respective rotors and stators associated with each printing unit are radially displaced from each other relative to the axes to define a gap between adjacent printing cylinders. The relative radial position of the printing cylinders is determined not by any mechanical mounting but, rather, by way of magnetic lateral forces of the induction motors. Each directly-driven printing cylinder is also provided with asymmetrical prestress means which holds the printing cylinder in the off (non-printing) position, eccentric relative to the on (printing) position, regardless of the electrical control and in such a way that a gap remains between the interacting printing cylinders.

To form a cellular surface layer in which the depth or shape of the cells is controllable, the layer is composed of a material which has a temperature-dependent shape retention memory, which is embossed or engraved, without material removal, on a carrier, such as a printing machine cylinder. The temperature of the layer is controlled during application of the embossing and, for example upon drop of temperature, it changes shape to a previously given shape. The depth, size, or presence of cells on the layer can thereby be controlled by controlling the layer temperature, for example by external heaters (9, 26) or by temperature controlling the carrier by a temperature controlled fluid circuit (38).

Printing machine system and inking method

To facilitate the manufacture of an anilox roller for an inker of an offset rotary printing machine, a cylindrical core has a layer of ink accepting material, for example copper, applied thereon. To form wear-resistant ribs (8) between which ink receptor depressions or cells (19) can be formed, the layer (3) of ink accepting material is formed with grooves into which a hard, wear-resistant material is applied, completely filling the grooves. The ink receptor depressions or cells are then formed in the ink accepting material, which is softer than said wear-resistant material. The thickness of the ink accepting layer (3) originally applied is greater than the depth of the cells which, typically, have a depth of about 0.02 mm.

Method of making an anilox roller or cylinder

To permit use of a yielding surface covering (16) on an ink application cylinder (7, 12, 32) offset printing machine, without slippage or rubbing between the ink application cylinder and an adjacent plate cylinder (5, 31), a drive is arranged between the plate cylinder and the ink application cylinder which provides for corresponding linear circumferential speed by changing the profile of engaged drive gears (6, 13) driving the ink application cylinder and the plate cylinder; the drive gears have the same pitch circle diameter. The yielding surface (16) on the ink application cylinder has a thickness of between 2-3% of the diameter of the ink application cylinder (12) and a durometer value of between about 60-70 on the Shore A scale; the ink application cylinder (12) has a diameter of about 99% of the diameter of the plate cylinder and in operation is engaged against the plate cylinder over an engagement zone of about 7-9 mm in circumferential length (1).

To eliminate the necessity of a hose connection between a chambered doctor blade unit (1) and an ink supply unit (14), the ink supply unit and the chambered doctor blade unit are, each, formed with an ink supply duct and an ink reception duct, respectively, which, when the chambered doctor blade unit is in operative position engaged against an ink roller (3), fits against the ink supply duct; upon rotation or sliding-away of the chambered doctor blade unit (1), the fluid communication between said ducts is released, thereby permitting ready removal of the chambered doctor blade unit, for example for cleaning or servicing.

To associate the ink requirement of subject matter to be printed from a printing forme (6, 27) to the ink being supplied thereto by an ink application cylinder (5, 26), the ink application cylinder is provided with a jacket, sleeve or cover having a cellular surface, and in which the cell distribution or cell configuration of the surface is matched, at least approximately, and, for example, in zones or regions, to the subject matter to be printed from the forme. The ink can be transferred by an ink application roller, in which a plate cylinder carries the forme, and the ink application roller, the plate cylinder and the cylinder with the cellular surface cover all have essentially the same diameter and are all driven at the same speed. Pre-forming the cell distribution or cell configuration on a jacket or cover, which may be in form of a plate applied to the ink supplying cylinder, or a sleeve, can accurately meter ink for the forme cylinder, without requiring wear-causing engagement pressures of a doctor blade against the cellular surface.

Set-up method for a printing system, and resulting printing system

The chambered doctor blade unit has an anilox roller against which a doctor blade can be engaged. An ink trough, and an arrangement to transport ink from the ink trough to a chambered doctor blade unit or an ink application roller is provided, the chambered doctor blade unit or the ink application roller being, respectively, operatively coupled with the anilox roller. The ink supply trough, the ink application device, the doctor blade and the ink trough form a single structural unit which is located on a carrier structure on the printing machine, to be removable as a unit. A plurality of units are severably coupled to a common ink pump shaft on the printing machine. The printing machine carrier structure may be pivotable so that the entire unit can be pivoted away from an ink application roller of the printing machine, or away from the anilox roller; or, alternatively, the anilox roller and the support structure therefor may also form part of the single structural unit so that the entire inker can be removed as a unit, for example for exchange with inkers having different colors or different inks, and requiring anilox rollers of different surface configuration.

Chambered doctor blade inker system

A doctor blade holder has two holder parts (4, 5) to clamp a doctor blade (3) with a straight edge therebetween. The holder parts define opposed holder surfaces (6, 7), which, at least in part, form surfaces of an elliptical cylinder which has a cross-sectional form in the shape of an ellipse (Z) which has a longitudinal axis (B--B) which intersects the longitudinal axis (A--A) of the cylinder by an angle of inclination (.alpha.) which, customarily, is in the order of between 0.1.degree. to 1.degree., but may be substantially larger. The minor half-axis of the ellipse (Z) is equal to the radius (r) of the printing machine cylinder (1) and the major half-axis of the ellipse (Z) is longer than the length (1) of the printing machine cylinder against which the doctor blade edge is engaged.

To permit easy interchangeability of a doctor blade unit which could be a 'throw-away' or 'recyclable' item, the doctor blade unit and a carrier element (8) on the printing machine are formed with interengaging plug-and-socket connections formed, respectively, on the carrier element (8) and the rear wall (2) of the chambered doctor blade unit (1), in which the plugs can be hollow plugs or pipe stubs, secured to and projecting from the carrier element (8) snugly fitting into reception openings (13) formed in the rear wall (2) of the chambered doctor blade unit.

To control the amount of ink transferred between an ink application cylinder (2) and an ink supplying cylinder (1) having a cellular surface, such as an anilox roller or another roller or cylinder having ink receptor cells and/or a further cylinder (3) such as a plate cylinder, the ink application cylinder (2) is formed with a yieldingly compressible surface and the yieldingly compressible surface is pre-compressed by application of a surface compression roller (4) thereagainst. The surface compression roller (4) deforms the yieldingly compressible surface (14) which does not expand instantaneously; it may be located in advance of engagement with the ink supplying cylinder (1) or with the plate cylinder (3) by a distance shorter than the decay distance of the compression effected by the surface compression roller. A plurality of such pre-surface compression rollers may be provided, located axially adjacent each other, to control the amount of ink being transfered to the plate cylinder in axially adjacent zones.

To prevent escape of ink from a gap (A) between the edge surface (11) of a side wall portion (10) facing a printing machine roller (9) and the surface of the roller, the side wall (3), or at least the side wall portion, is upwardly, outwardly inclined, so that internal flow of printing ink within the chamber, upon rotation of the roller, will result in a resultant flow speed vector (V.sub.res) which is inclined at an angle (.beta.) which is less than the angle of inclination (.alpha.) of the side wall, and thereby push liquid away from the side wall and hence from said gap (A).
