A combined air turbine starter and flow control valve includes a turbine having turbine blades and a shaft rotating with the turbine blades. The turbine is received within a nozzle housing. The nozzle housing includes an inlet. A radially outwardly extending inner surface extends from the inlet and toward the turbine blades. A flow control piston is received to be movable along a rotational axis of the turbine shaft, and toward and away the radially outwardly extending surface of the nozzle housing. A control is programmed to direct a movement system to position the flow control piston relative to the radially outwardly extending surface to achieve a desired volume of airflow to the turbine blades. A gas turbine engine starting system is also disclosed.

Combined control valve and air turbine starter

An exhaust baffle component for an aircraft starter includes a plurality of frames arranged with one another as a single component. At least one of the plurality of frames may include an attachment flange extending therefrom and defining a receiving aperture. Each frame of the plurality of frames may include one or more louvers stacked relative to one another and spaced from one another to define an air opening therebetween. The attachment flange may extend from the frame at a substantially central region of an upper portion of the frame to substantially align the receiving aperture with a starter aperture of a starter component to facilitate securement of the attachment flange to the starter component.

A baffle component for a turbine starter includes a first baffle level and a second baffle level stacked with the first baffle level. The first baffle level and the second baffle level may be arranged with a starter assembly such that airflow entering the baffle levels is directed by the first baffle level and the second baffle level to exit the starter assembly.

Exhaust baffle component for an air turbine assembly

A standpipe assembly configured to connect to a starter that includes a housing is described herein. The standpipe assembly includes: a standpipe having first and second openings at opposite ends of a hollow passageway, wherein the standpipe, upon being connected to the starter, is oriented within the housing so that the standpipe drains oil through the standpipe when oil in the housing reaches an overfill level, and is oriented in parallel to internal oil flow in the starter to inhibit interference with the internal oil flow during operation of the starter; and an attachment portion, wherein the attachment portion is structured to attach the standpipe assembly to the housing of the starter and prevent movement of the standpipe assembly with respect to the housing of the starter.

Oil standpipe assembly for servicing and oil level maintenance of a starter in a gas turbine engine

A baffle is provided herein. The baffle includes a cylindrical baffle section. The cylindrical baffle section includes one or more holes. The baffle also includes a split line retaining section. The split line retaining section includes one or more mounting bosses. Each of the one or more mounting bosses receives one or more mounting bolts.

A planet gear for use in an air turbine starter is formed of a first part having a set of gear teeth at a first axial location. A shaft extends axially away from the first set of gear teeth. A second part is interference fit on the first part, with the second part having a second set of gear teeth. The second part is mounted on the shaft of the first part. An outer diameter of the shaft is selected to be significantly larger than an inner diameter of a cylindrical portion of the second part which is interference fit on the shaft. A ratio of the outer diameter to the inner diameter is between 1.0005 and 1.0100. A planetary gear system, an air turbine starter and a method of installing a planet gear are also disclosed.
