A composite fire resistant laminar cushioning material is disclosed. The material comprises a foamed polyphosphazene upper lamella and a foamed polyurethane lower lamella. The foamed polyphosphazene further comprises a lamelliform substantially unfoamed outer first layer and a substantially foamed second layer. The cushioning material is capable of passing the Cal-133 flammability test.

Fire resistant laminar cushioning material

2-Nitro-4-(4-pyridinyl)benzoic acids, such as 2-nitro-4-(4-pyridinyl)benzoic acid, are prepared by oxidizing the appropriate 4-(4-alkyl-3-nitrophenyl)pyridine with, e.g., potassium permanganate or nitric acid. The products are particularly useful in the preparation of antibacterial 1-alkyl-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-7-pyridinyl-3-quinolinecarboxylic acids.

2-Nitro-4-(4-pyridinyl) benzoic acids and derivatives

4-(4-Halo-3-nitrophenyl)pyridines, useful as intermediates in the synthesis of antibacterial 1-alkyl-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-7-pyridinyl-3-quinolinecarboxylic acids, are obtained by nitrating 4-(4-halophenyl)pyridines. The 4-(4-halo-3-nitrohenyl)pyridines may be converted to the antibacterial agents by reducing them to 4-(3-aminophenyl)pyridines and then subjecting the amino compounds to suitable known reactions.

Process for preparing antibacterial compounds

4-(4-Pyridinyl)isatoic anhydrides are prepared by reacting a 2-amino-4-(4-pyridinyl)benzoic acid, i.e., an acid, ester, or salt, with phosgene, preferably gaseous phosgene. The products are particularly useful in the preparation of antibacterial 1-alkyl-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-7-pyridinyl-3-quinolinecarboxylic acids.

4-(4-Pyridinyl)isatoic anhydride

N-alkyl-4-(4-pyridinyl)isatoic anhydrides are prepared by alkylating a 4-(4-pyridinyl)isatoic anhydride, suitably in the presence of sodium hydride and N,N-dimethylformamide. The products are particularly useful in the preparation of antibacterial 1-alkyl-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-7-pyridinyl-3-quinolinecarboxylic acids.

N-Alkyl-4-(4-pyridinyl)isatoic anhydrides

4-(3- and 4-chlorocyclohex-3-enyl)pyridines, useful as intermediates in the preparation of pesticides and bactericides, are prepared by reacting a 4-vinylpyridine with chloroprene.

Cyclic-keto-acids of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or a monovalent alkyl radical which can be either straight chain or branched having from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms and X=1, 3, or 4, are prepared by reacting a functionalized 1-bromoalkane of the formula: ##STR2## wherein R and X are as defined above and Y is a leaving group, preferably the halogens, in a liquid solvent medium with carbon monoxide at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a catalytic amount of a metal carbonyl compound and an alkali or an alkaline earth metal inorganic base.

Preparation of cyclic-keto-acids

4-(Chlorophenyl)pyridines in which the chlorine atom is in the 3- or 4-position of the phenyl group are prepared by reacting a 4-vinyl pyridine with chloroprene to form a 4-(3- or 4-chlorocyclohex-3-enyl)pyridine and then catalytically dehydrogenating the 4-(3- or 4-chlorocyclohex-3-enyl)pyridine to form a 4-(3- or 4-chlorophenyl)pyridine. The 4-(3- and 4-monochlorocyclohex-3-enyl)pyridines are novel compounds.

Substituted pyridines and their preparation

Lubricating oil dispersants are made by reacting an (a) alkenyl succinic anhydride, (b) an alcohol (e.g. pentaerythritol), (c) a hydroxy-substituted amine (e.g. tris-hydroxymethylaminomethane, (d) a polyoxyalkyleneamine, and (e) an alkenyl succinimide.

It is disclosed that water soluble salts of carboxyalkyloxy succinic acids can be obtained in a form containing less than usual contamination by alkaline earth metal and related substances by treating the contaminated salts with alkali metal carbonate and separating (e.g., filtering) at an elevated temperature and at a selected pH region. The most important factor in obtaining this improvement is the use of the proper separating temperature, preferably within the range of 70.degree.-125.degree. C., especially a temperature of about 100.degree. C. In addition, the use of certain conditions of pH minimizes side reactions.

Primary alcohol containing impurities which have internal hydroxyl groups is purified to cause removal of such internal hydroxyl groups with reduced formation of ethers by treating the impure alcohol with an alumina catalyst which has been contacted with a hydroxide of a Group 1-A element. Preferably the alcohol treatment is concurrent with or followed by a hydrogenation treatment the purpose of which is to improve the iodine number of the treated alcohol.

A process for preparing 2-benzimidazole carbamate compounds by condensing an alkyl cyano carbamate with an o-phenylenediamine produced by reacting an ortho-nitro-aniline with thiocyanogen followed by replacement of the cyanide with an alkyl group and then converting the nitro group to the amine.

It is disclosed that water soluble carboxyalkoxy succinate tetrahydrate salt can be precipitated in high purity from alcohol-water solvent systems when operating at temperatures from about 50.degree. C to about 100.degree. C using seed crystals of either tetrahydrate or pentahydrate form or a mixture thereof. Useful temperatures are from about 45.degree. to about 75.degree. C. Preferred temperatures are above about 55.degree. C up to about 65.degree. C where tetrahydrate product is obtainable even where pentahydrate seed is used.
