There is described a method for the prevention or inhibition of gastric acid secretion, and/or the treatment of conditions involving excess gastric acid secretion, which method comprises administration of a compound of the formula I, ##STR1## or a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative thereof (as active ingredient), to a patient having, or liable to have, excess gastric acid secretion and/or a condition involving excess gastric acid secretion, or in whom a reduction in gastric acid secretion is desired.

There is described a method for the treatment of hyperuricaemia and/or gout, which comprises administering an effective quantity of 6,8-di-t-butyl-4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyran-2-carboxylic acid, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, as active ingredient, to a patient having hyperuricaemia and/or gout. There are also described unit dosage forms of pharmaceutical compositions containing the compound.
