A piston ring that is pre-treated by grit blasting to a defined roughness, followed by PVD coating with a metal nitride to a thickness of at least 10 &#x3bc;m, leaving peaks and valleys in the coated piston ring. The coated piston ring is then lapped to remove the peaks without penetrating the coating, so that valleys and plateaus remain in the coated surface. The resulting piston ring exhibits superior coating retention due to the increased surface area created by the grit blasting, and yet also superior performance, as the cavities remaining increase the porosity of the coating and thus enhance the lubrication of the ring.

Piston ring and method for manufacturing a piston ring

A ring carrier for a piston for an internal combustion engine is formed by a carrier body having an outer circumferential surface, an inner circumferential surface, a top surface and a bottom surface, with at least one ring groove formed in the outer circumferential surface. An outer circumferential portion of the ring carrier is formed of gray iron, and an inner circumferential portion is formed of ductile iron. A transition region between the outer circumferential portion and the inner circumferential portion intersects upper and lower flanks of the ring groove, so that an outer circumferential extent of the flanks is formed of gray iron and an inner circumferential extent of the flanks is formed of ductile iron.

A piston ring is formed from a steel substrate consisting of the carbon in a range of 0.80-0.95 wt. %, silicon in a range of 0.30-0.55 wt. %, manganese in a range of 0.25-0.5 wt. %, phosphorus in a range of up to 0.04 wt. %, sulfur in a range of up to 0.04 wt. %, chromium in a range of 17-18 wt. %, molybdenum in a range of 0.70-1.25 wt. %, vanadium in a range of 0.05-0.15%, the remainder iron. The ring has been through hardened and tempered so that it has a hardness of 46-54 HRC. A coating is then applied via PVD or other suitable methods onto the ring surface to create the finished piston ring.

Coated steel piston ring

A cylinder liner for internal combustion engines has an outer roughened surface that has particularly good adherence properties. The surface has is covered with protrusions or spines of varying shapes and sizes, which are created by spraying the mold with a coating and then casting the cylinder liner in the mold. The spines are generally worm-shaped, with a length greater than a width, and a large spacing between the spines.

A method of forming a piston ring includes providing a base portion formed of a metallic material, the base portion having a first surface, and a second surface that is opposite the first surface, the base portion configured to interface with a piston ring groove. The method includes grinding the first surface to form a reference surface, applying a chromium layer to the second surface, and grinding the chromium layer to reduce a surface roughness of the chromium layer.

Exemplary oil control rings and methods are disclosed. An oil control ring may include an upper lamella having a first outer radial surface and a lower lamella having a second outer radial surface. An expander ring is in communication with the upper lamella and the lower lamella and generates an expander radial outward force on the lamellas. At least one of the first outer radial surface and the second outer radial surface is comprised of a first contact section and a first tapered section. The first tapered section is configured to generate a first radially inward force greater than or equal to the expander radial outward force when moved in a first direction and a second radially inward force less than the expander radial outward force when moved in a second direction.

A cylinder liner for internal combustion engines has an outer roughened surface that has particularly good adherence properties. The surface is covered with protrusions or spines of varying shapes and sizes, which are created by spraying the mold with a coating and then casting the cylinder liner in the mold. The spines are generally conical or needle-shaped, with the bases being larger than the tips. The spines have an aggregate cross-sectional surface area measured at 0.2 mm from a ground cylindrical surface that is between 50-90% of the total ground cylindrical surface area, and an aggregate cross-sectional surface area measured at 0.4 mm from the ground cylindrical surface that is between 20-45% of the total ground cylindrical surface area.

Exemplary pistons and methods are disclosed. A method may include depositing a scuff and seizure resistant material via a thermal spray method on the surface of a piston pin bore used in internal combustion engines. Exemplary pistons may have a crown and a skirt. The piston crown may define a combustion bowl and a ring land extending circumferentially around the combustion bowl, the skirt supporting the crown, the skirt including a pair of pin bosses, the pin bosses each defining a pin bore configured to receive a piston pin, each pin bore defining a pin bore surface extending circumferentially about the piston pin bore, the bore surface formed of a first material. The method may further include applying a coating comprising at least a second material different from the first material to the pin bore surfaces using a thermal spray process.

A piston ring for a piston of a reciprocating internal combustion engine. The piston ring comprises a body having an outer contact surface. A tribological coating is formed on the outer contact surface of the body. The tribological coating comprises a quaternary Cr&#x2014;V&#x2014;Ti&#x2014;N system. In one form, the tribological coating is deposited on the outer contact surface of the body as a stack of multiple layers.

A piston ring and a method of forming a piston ring. A masking agent is applied to a selective area on an exterior surface of a piston ring. The masking agent inhibits the subsequent application of additional coatings to the selective area on the exterior surface of the piston ring. In one form, the masking agent may inhibit the subsequent application of a nitride layer to the selective area on the exterior surface of the piston ring. A recess may be formed in an outer peripheral side of the piston ring, and a thermal spray coating may be formed within the recess in the outer peripheral side of the piston ring.

Exemplary piston rings are disclosed, comprising a base portion formed of a metallic material, and an outer contact surface extending between opposing side faces of the piston ring. The piston ring may include a coating layer applied to the outer contact surface, with the coating layer including an inner layer and an outer layer. Exemplary methods of making a piston ring are also disclosed, comprising providing a base portion formed of a metallic material, applying an inner layer to an outer surface of the base portion, and applying an outer layer on top of the inner layer.

Piston ring with dual coating

Various methods including applying a coating material with an additive to an article are disclosed. The coating material may be in a powder form before a thermal spraying used to apply the coating material. The coating material may comprise a chromium nitride, a chromium carbide, a chromium silicide, or a tungsten carbide. Additional materials may be added, e.g., a molybdenum alloy such as molybdenum-chromium. In one aspect, thermal spraying includes melting the coating material, propelling the molten coating material toward the article to be coated, and coating the article with the molten coating material. In another aspect, the coated article is one or more piston rings.

A system and method for reducing microwelding of a piston ring installed in a circumferential groove of a piston, wherein the ring has at least one piston groove engaging surface which is coated with a polyaryletherketone polymer. This composition provides critical lubrication during the piston and piston ring break-in period and prevents localized high pressure, and high temperature areas that promote microwelding.
