Disclosed is a heavy metal removal media containing ferric hydroxide having unique levels of microporosity and mesoporosity/macroporosity, and/or a specific average particle size and/or granule size. The ferric hydroxide is made by simultaneously combining in a vessel at least one iron salt and at least one hydroxide compound, and then recovering the ferric hydroxide. The ferric hydroxide made by simultaneous mixing is effective in removing heavy metals, such as arsenic, from aqueous systems.

Arsenic removal media

Disclosed are formed composite material compositions suitable for use in the removal of heavy metals from aqueous systems, a process for preparing said composite materials and a process for the removal of heavy metals using said composite materials. Formed particulate composite material compositions are comprised of (A) at least one ion exchange material; (B) at least one activated carbon; and, optionally, (C) at least one binder material. The method for preparing said composite material compositions comprises first mixing components (A), (B) and, optionally, (C), then forming particles from said mixture. The method for removing heavy metals from aqueous systems containing one or more heavy metals comprises contacting said aqueous system with one or more of the composite materials until the heavy metals are substantially removed from the aqueous system.

Composite material, preparation and use thereof

Disclosed is a method for removing arsenic from aqueous systems containing arsenic which includes contacting said aqueous system with an adsorbent material comprising (i) activated bauxite and (ii) aluminum trihydrate, until the arsenic is substantially removed from said aqueous system. The adsorbent material is prepared by the steps including (i) mixing powders of activated bauxite and aluminum trihydrate in the presence of water to form granules; (ii) drying said granules; and (iii) calcining said dried granules.
