A method for measuring and displaying the flatness of a rolled steel sheet is disclosed that includes the steps of measuring tension in the sheet at a plurality of locations on the surface of the sheet and determining a plurality of tension ranges into which the sensed tension level can fall. A color is associated with each of the tension ranges, and a representation of the sheet is produced that is made up of a plurality of regions, each region having a color corresponding to tension range into which the tension sensed at the corresponding location on the surface of the sheet falls. A device for carrying out this method is also disclosed.

An applicator spreads a treatment agent, such as flux powder or granules, uniformly on the surface of molten metal during continuous casting. The flux is supplied to the applicator and argon or other gas under pressure is also supplied adjacent the applicator in at least two directions. A programmable controller controls the gas feed in each of the directions so that each gas flow is independently controllable. The applicator preferably is a frusto-triangular-shaped pan having a narrow end and a wider end with the narrow end connected to the supply of flux. The applicator is supported by a base having an upper surface with a series of channels defined by vanes so that the flux is divided along the channels and then exits at the wider end of the applicator. The base is either flat or domed.

A molten metal slide gate valve for use on a ladle or tundish. The slide gate valve uses a refractory plate or plates having a shallow groove all around the periphery of one or both surfaces of the plate. The groove surrounds the molten metal orifice in the plate. The base of the groove has a porous refractory insert connected to a source of nonoxidizing gas under pressure to provide a nonoxidizing gas seal all around the molten metal orifices in the slide gate valve and to prevent the aspiration of air into the molten metal orifices during discharge of the molten metal from the ladle or tundish.

Apparatus for retaining slag in a tundish or a ladle or similar vessel containing molten metal such as used in the steel industry. A refractory nozzle member and a refractory retainer member are secured to the bottom of the vessel around the molten metal discharge orifice. A refractory plug member of a density between that of the molten metal and the slag is positioned laterally within the retainer member but free to move vertically during discharge of the molten metal from the vessel.

A molten metal slide gate valve for use on a ladle or tundish. The slide gate valve uses a stationary upper plate having a groove formed in its lower face around the periphery of the plate. The groove is connected to a source of a nonoxidizing gas under pressure to provide a gas seal around the molten metal orifices in the slide gate valve and prevent the aspiration of air into the molten metal orifices during discharge of the molten metal from the ladle or tundish.
