An AC or DC microdischarge device that comprises a fluorescent conversion material (FCM) and a multiplicity of gas filled microcavity cells, each cell being connected to two or more electrodes to cause a gas discharge in the cell, the gas discharge providing photons that excite the FCM such that the FCM emits IR. In one embodiment, the electronic circuitry for each cell comprises at least one integrated active component such as a transistor. Other active components may be included such as a high speed shift register, addressing logic, and/or control circuits. In another embodiment, the microcavity and active components are made from the same substrate such as the same silicon wafer. The microdischarge device may include one or more electrodes encapsulated in a dielectric. The electrodes are configured to ignite a microdischarge in a microcavity cell when an AC or a pulsed DC excitation potential is applied between the electrodes connected to the cell. The devices include linear and planar arrays of microdischarge devices. The microcavities in the planar arrays may be selectively excited for display applications.

Microdischarge display with fluorescent conversion material

Each Plasma-tube may be of any suitable geometric configuration and may be used alone or in any combination with one or more Plasma-shells, such as a Plasma-disc, Plasma-dome, and/or Plasma-sphere. Luminescent material may be positioned near or on each Plasma-tube or Plasma-shell to provide or enhance light output. A flexible base substrate may be used to wrap a layer or blanket of radiation detection Plasma-tubes about the selected object. The substrate base may comprise an elongated rod that is used as a probe to detect radiation from an object. An object may be passed through a ring or a cylinder of Plasma-tubes.

Hollow shell and method of manufacture

A positive column gas discharge plasma display device comprising one or more ionizable gas filled elongated Plasma-tubes. The display may be a dual substrate or a single substrate device. One or more substrates may be of a flexible material. The device comprises a multiplicity of parallel elongated hollow tubes filled with an ionizable gas. Each tube has at least one column electrode extended along its elongated axis with an array of row electrodes orthogonal to the column electrode. The row electrodes are arranged in pairs with an isolation bar between each pair to prevent spreading of the gas discharge.

Apparatus to eject on demand discrete hollow microsphere droplets that are characterized by a highly regular and predictable spherical shape, devoid of tails or other irregularities common in the prior art with a selected pure gas contained in the center. A variety of gases at various pressures including complete vacuums may be contained in the hollow microsphere. Microspheres filled with ionizable gas may be used as pixels in a plasma display panel. The inside of each Plasma-sphere may contain a luminescent material such as a phosphor and/or a secondary electron emission material such as magnesium oxide or a rare earth oxide introduced during the gas filling of the microsphere.
