A coupling includes a housing having a wall defining an interior space and extending along a central longitudinal axis. A ring is movably mounted with respect to the wall. At least one moveable member has an engagement surface for engaging with an adapter that is positionable within the interior space of the housing. One or more ramps are defined on the ring for (i) moving the engagement surface of the moveable member toward the central longitudinal axis upon moving the ring in one direction in order to engage the coupling to the adapter, and (ii) moving the engagement surface of the moveable member away from the central longitudinal axis upon moving the ring in an opposite direction in order to disengage the coupling from the adapter.

Couplings for use with mating couplings with locking rings. A stem coupling may have a coupling head configured to attach with a head portion of the mating coupling, a stem mated to the coupling head where the stem has a threaded portion on an outer surface, and a retractable locking sleeve positioned on a portion of the coupling head. The retractable locking sleeve may have a locked position and an unlocked position for preventing and permitting the coupling head to attach to or detach from the mating coupling. The stem coupling includes a stem locking ring having a first position preventing axial movement of the locking sleeve and a second position permitting axial movement of the locking sleeve. The stem locking ring may also include at least one of a color and indicia to alert a user to a type of media for which the stem coupling is intended.

A quick action coupling is provided of male and female coupling parts in which spherical camming members are loosely retained in a multiplicity of circumferentially disposed openings extended radially through the wall portion of the female coupling member. An axially movable collar surrounding the cylindrical wall portion of the female coupling member has an internally disposed camming surface portion which is configured to cam the spherical members radially inwardly upon movement of the collar in the direction of the open end of the coupling member. The male coupling member is provided with an annular end portion interfacing with a compressible sealing ring in the female coupling portion and further has an upwardly open groove disposed in alignment with the spherical members when the end surface portion is in interfacing relationship with the sealing ring. Pushing the collar axially towards the open end of the female member applies a camming force on the spherical members which first locks the spherical members within the circumferentially disposed grooves and then forces the end portion of the male member axially so as to effect a compression of the sealing ring. A ring having detent recesses is rotatably mounted on the female coupling member for movement to a position in which detent pins on the collar interfit with the detent recesses. Locking means are disclosed to block movement to the uncoupled position.
