Over-voltage protection systems and methods are disclosed. In one aspect, a biasing circuit is added to a pre-existing clamp required by the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Type-C specification at a configuration control (CC) pin. The biasing circuit turns the pre-existing clamp into an adjustable clamp that dynamically adjusts to over-voltage conditions. In an exemplary aspect, the biasing circuit may include a biasing field effect transistor (FET) and a pair of switches that selectively couple the pre-existing clamp and the biasing FET to fixed voltages such that the CC pin is maintained at an acceptable voltage. In another exemplary aspect, the biasing circuit may omit the biasing FET and rely on two switches that selectively couple the pre-existing clamp to fixed voltages such that the CC pin is maintained at an acceptable voltage.

Over-voltage protection systems and methods

The present disclosure includes a method of charging a battery. In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving, in a battery charging circuit on an electronic device, an input voltage having a first voltage value from an external power source. The battery charger is configured to produce a charge current having a first current value into the battery. The input current limit and/or duty cycle of the charger is monitored. Control signals may be generated to increase the first voltage value of the input voltage if either (i) the input current limit is activated or (ii) the duty cycle reaches a maximum duty cycle. The charger also receives signals indicating a temperature inside the electronic device and generates control signals to decrease the value of the input voltage when the temperature increases above a threshold temperature.

Systems and methods for charging a battery

A multi-phase (e.g., dual-phase) concurrent configuration of a power management component supports higher current levels to peripheral devices while maintaining acceptable thermal limits. A dual-phase integrated circuit (IC) having a first input/output (I/O) port coupled to a battery and a second I/O port coupled to an adapter and a peripheral device implements the configuration. The dual phase IC includes a dual-phase voltage regulator that selectively provide power (i) from the first I/O port to the second I/O port to provide power to the peripheral device or (ii) from the second I/O port to the first I/O port to provide power to the battery. A controller activates a boost phase to power the second I/O port in response to detecting a demand current of the peripheral device exceeds a maximum current available from the adapter.

Dual-phase operation for concurrently charging a battery and powering a peripheral device

Systems, methods, and apparatus for testing devices adapted for connection to other devices using universal serial bus (USB) are disclosed. Devices to be tested are caused to enter a special mode of operation when resistance measured at one or more terminals of a USB Type-C connector have values associated with the special mode of operation. One or more operations of the device are automatically initiated when the resistance coupled to the at least one terminal of the connector has a measured value that matches one of a set of resistance values maintained by the device. The one or more operations may include configuring a power management circuit based on the measured value, and entering a mode of operation that controls startup of at least one processor on the device when the measured value matches a first resistance value.

Type-C factory and special operating mode support

Systems, methods, and apparatus for testing devices adapted for connection to other devices using universal serial bus (USB) are disclosed. Devices to be tested are caused to enter a special mode of operation when a resistance measured across across two terminals of a USB Type-C connector has a value associated with the special mode of operation. One or more operations of the device are automatically initiated when the resistance between the two terminals has a measured value that matches one of a set of resistance values maintained by the device. The one or more operations may include configuring a power management circuit based on the measured value, and entering a special or factory boot mode that controls startup of at least one processor on the device based on the measured value. Each of the set of resistance values exceeds a minimum open-circuit resistance value specified for the connector.

A power control device can generate control signals to control operation of power sources. Additional control signals control operation of load switches that can be connected to the power sources to provide secondary sources of power. The load switches can be turned in a gradual manner at rates that depend on the power sources to which they are connected. The outputs of the load switches can be monitored for overvoltage and undervoltage conditions relative to the power sources to which they are connected.

A charging circuit using a switch mode power supply to charge a battery from a connected external power adapter may periodically turn off the switch mode power supply and disconnect its input terminal from the switch mode power supply. A load may be connected to the input terminal. The input terminal is monitored for voltage collapse, indicating whether or not the power adapter is connected.

Prevention of output supply boosting upon removal of input adapter

A system and method is provided to accomplish distributed power sequencing function of a large electronics system with minimum number of signals in the sequencing network without compromising the flexibility and expandability. In one embodiment of the invention, the power sequencing function is accomplished with two signals of the sequencing network: power_on/power_off signal and SEQ_LINK signal. The power_on/power_off signal controls whether the sequencing is in power_on mode for turning on power to multiple devices in a predetermined sequence or power_off mode for for turning off power to multiple devices in a reverse sequence. The SEQ_LINK signal controls when the sequence counters, located in each participating device, are allowed to count to the subsequent state. Each sequencing logic circuit of these participating devices responds to a predetermined sequence position to enable the power on or power off of the power supply it controls.

Power supply sequencing distributed among multiple devices with linked operation

Embodiments of the present invention include circuits and methods for calibrating position displacement in a voltage controlled actuator. In one embodiment, a calibration circuit comprises an actuator having a control terminal for receiving a programmable control voltage to set a displacement, a switch that selectively decouples said programmable voltage from said control terminal and couples a reference current to said control terminal when the control terminal is decoupled from said control voltage, a comparator that senses a voltage difference between said control voltage and said control terminal, and a timer coupled to an output of the comparator. The timer measures a time period required to increase the control terminal voltage. The capacitance of the actuator may be determined and used to calibrate the position of the actuator.

Circuits and methods for calibrating actuator displacement

Embodiments of the present invention include charge pump circuits and methods. In one embodiment, a first charge pump receives a voltage and generates a first charge pump output voltage and current for supplying the power requirements of a circuit. A second charge pump is coupled in series with the first charge pump. The second charge pump generates a second charge pump output voltage and current for supplying different power requirements of the circuit. In one embodiment, the first charge pump provides a high current low voltage output to a first circuit and the second charge pump provides a low current high voltage output to a second circuit. Capacitors of the first charge pump may be external to an integrated circuit and capacitors of the second charge pump may be internal to the integrated circuit.

Charge pump circuits and methods

Embodiments of the present invention include circuits and methods for calibrating lens displacement in a voltage controlled actuator. In one embodiment, a calibration circuit comprises a programmable voltage source that provides a voltage to a control terminal of an actuator to set a lens displacement, a switch that selectively decouples said programmable voltage source from said control terminal, a current source that provides a reference current to said control terminal when the control terminal is decoupled from said programmable voltage source, a comparator that senses a voltage difference between said programmable voltage source and said control terminal, and a timer coupled to an output of the comparator. The timer measures a time period required to increase the control terminal voltage. The capacitance of the actuator may be determined and used to calibrate the position of a lens.

Circuits and methods for calibrating lens displacement

Embodiments of the present invention include techniques for charging a battery using a regulator. In one embodiment, the present invention includes an electronic circuit comprising a regulator having an input coupled to a power source for receiving a voltage and a current and an output for providing an output current, an input voltage detection circuit coupled to the power source, and an adjustable current limit circuit for controlling the input or output current of the regulator, wherein input voltage detection circuit monitors the voltage from the power source and the adjustable current limit circuit changes the input or output current of the regulator to optimize the power drawn from power source.
