A polyester or polyester copolymer based composition, such as a polylactic acid based composition, is provided herein. The polyester or polyester copolymer based composition may include a plasticizer, such as an ether based, an ester based, and/or an ether-ester based plasticizer.

A fibrillar, nanotextured coating is deposited on a substrate by contacting the substrate with a reaction mixture comprising a reagent which is hydrolyzable to produced a cross-linked reaction product, and a first solvent which solvates the reagent and the reaction product. The reagent is hydrolyzed so as to provide a cross-linked reaction product which is bonded to the substrate. The substrate is then contacted with a second solvent which is a non-solvent for the reaction product so as to cause nanoscopic phase separation of the reaction product, resulting in the formation of a fibrillar nanotextured coating which is bonded to the substrate. The thus produced coating may be subjected to further chemical modification. The method may be utilized to produce superhydrophobic coatings. Also disclosed are coatings made by the method of the present invention.

Fibrillar, nanotextured coating and method for its manufacture

A method of oxidizing the surface of carbon microfibers that includes contacting the microfibers with an oxidizing agent that includes sulfuric acid and potassium chlorate under reaction conditions sufficient to oxidize the surface. The invention also features a method of decreasing the length of carbon microfibers that includes contacting the microfibers with an oxidizing agent under reaction conditions sufficient to decrease the length.

A method of modifying a surface is disclosed. The method includes contacting the surface with a hydridosilane under conditions and for a time sufficient to form a covalent bond between a silicon atom of the hydridosilane and the oxygen atom of a hydroxyl group on the surface. Graphitic nanotubes, which includes tubular fullerenes (commonly called &ldquo;buckytubes&rdquo;) and fibrils, which are functionalized by chemical substitution or by adsorption of functional moieties. More specifically the invention relates to graphitic nanotubes which are uniformly or non-uniformly substituted with chemical moieties or upon which certain cyclic compounds are adsorbed and to complex structures comprised of such functionalized fibrils linked to one another. The invention also relates to methods of introducing functional groups onto the surface of such fibrils.

Composites containing surface treated carbon microfibers

Methods are described for depositing a film of material on the surface of a substrate by i) dissolving a precursor of the material into a supercritical or near-supercritical solvent to form a supercritical or near-supercritical solution; ii) exposing the substrate to the solution, under conditions at which the precursor is stable in the solution; and iii) mixing a reaction reagent into the solution under conditions that initiate a chemical reaction involving the precursor, thereby depositing the material onto the solid substrate, while maintaining supercritical or near-supercritical conditions. The invention also includes similar methods for depositing material particles into porous solids, and films of materials on substrates or porous solids having material particles deposited in them.
