Novel catalysts are provided for the polymerization of olefins such as ethylene. The catalysts consist essentially of a chromium compound supported upon an inorganic carrier containing aluminum and phosphorus moieties, at least a portion of the chromium having a valence of less than 6. The inorganic carrier is an amorphous precipitate of aluminum phosphate or an amorphous precipitate containing aluminum and phosphorus moieties in an atomic ratio in the range of about 5:1 to 1:1. The catalysts are particularly useful for polymerizing ethylene in a Particle Form Process in that the catalyst has essentially no polymerization induction period and provides ethylene polymers having a desirably broad molecular weight distribution and a desirably high melt flow shear ratio.

A process is provided for the polymerization of an olefin such as ethylene in the vapor phase in a moving bed of particles of the polymerized olefin in which novel means are employed to feed the finely-divided solid polymerization catalyst to the polymerization zone. The process is carried out by pumping into the polymerization zone a Bingham fluid which has the finely-divided solid polymerization catalyst uniformly dispersed throughout a solid continuous phase, which is a mixture of a wax and a hydrocarbon which is a liquid at ambient temperature.

Vapor phase processes for the polymerization of olefins

A process is provided for the stereospecific polymerization of an olefin such as ethylene in a liquid medium in which a finely-divided solid polymerization catalyst is fed to the polymerization zone on a truly continuous basis to provide a uniform dispersion of the polymerization catalyst throughout the polymerization zone. The process is carried out by pumping into the polymerization zone a Bingham fluid which has the finely-divided solid polymerization catalyst uniformly dispersed throughout a solid continuous phase, which is a mixture of a wax and a liquid hydrocarbon.

Stereospecific olefin polymerization processes

An improved process is provided for incorporating additives into thermoplastic polymers. The desired additive(s) are dispersed in a continuous solid phase which is a mixture of a wax and a normally liquid hydrocarbon to form a Bingham fluid composition. These Bingham fluid compositions, while solid at ambient temperature and pressure, will flow under an applied pressure and can be pumped to feed the additive to a molten polymer. When this mixture is passed through a mixing apparatus such as an extruder, the additive is uniformly dispersed throughout the polymer. The process is particularly well suited to incorporate additives into a molten ethylene polymer either as, or immediately after, the molten ethylene polymer is discharged from the reaction zone in which the polymer is prepared.

Process for dispersing additives in thermoplastic polymers

A process is provided for the continuous high-pressure mass polymerization of ethylene in which novel means are employed to continuously introduce the free radical generating polymerization initiator into the polymerization zone. The process is carried out by pumping into the polymerization a Bingham fluid which has a free-radical generating polymerization initiator uniformly dispersed throughout a solid continuous phase, which is a mixture of a wax and a liquid hydrocarbon.

An improved process is provided for incorporating finely-divided inorganic additives such as diatomaceous earth into thermoplastic polymers. The desired additive(s) are dispersed in a normally liquid hydrocarbon to form a Bingham fluid composition. Processes for dispersing inorganic additives in thermoplastic polymers

Bingham fluid compositions are provided which contain a functional material such as a polymerization initiator dispersed in a solid continuous phase, which is a mixture of a wax and a liquid hydrocarbon. Such compositions are prepared by heating the wax and the liquid hydrocarbon to form a melt and dispersing the functional material in the melt. Upon cooling, the composition solidifies with the functional material being uniformly dispersed throughout the continuous solid phase. The compositions, while solid at ambient temperature and pressure, assume the flow characteristics of a liquid under an applied pressure and can be pumped to feed the functional material to a polymerization reactor or molten polymer on a continuous basis.

A vent plate for supporting a finger having a rivet portion is disposed intermediate adjacent core laminations in a dynamoelectric machine. A plurality of finger members secured to the vent plate cooperate with the core laminations to define a ventilation duct for circulation of a cooling gas through the core. The vent plate has a plurality of slot openings arranged to receive the rivet portions of each finger. The vent plate slots are characterized by a bow-tie outline defined by intersecting planar and curved side surfaces which permits variable orientation of rivet portions through a predetermined angular range.

The invention is directed to a pycnometer designed to measure the density of particulate porous polymer samples, particularly polymer samples having hydrocarbons and/or air absorbed in the pores thereof. The apparatus includes a sample cell of fixed volume fitted with a sample container of fixed weight, a gas reservoir of fixed volume, a valved line providing gas communication between the sample cell and the gas reservoir, a linear variable differential transducer to measure the weight of the polymer sample in the sample cell, a variable capacitance quartz crystal for measuring gas pressure in the gas reservoir, and a computer which calculates the density of the sample from the sample weight, and the volume of the sample determined by measurement of a super-atmospheric gas pressure in the gas reservoir when isolated from the sample cell and the equalized pressure established when the gas reservoir is placed in open communication with the sample cell. An output signal from the computer indicative of the sample's density can be fed to a light-emitting diode or a printer, or to a process control computer to make any required adjustments in a polymerization reactor to produce polymer within a preselected range of polymer density.

Pycnometer

A process is disclosed for the preparation of a polymerization catalyst useful for the polymerization of ethylene. The catalyst consists of a chromium catalyst supported on a silica aerogel having a surface area of at least 300 square meters per gram and a pore volume of at least 2 milliliters per gram, said values being determined by isothermal liquid nitrogen desorption. The silica aerogel is prepared by a modification of the method disclosed by Kistler in U.S. Pat. No. 2,249,767.

The catalysts consist essentially of a chromium compound supported upon an inorganic carrier containing aluminum and arsenate moieties. The inorganic carrier is an amorphous precipitate of aluminum arsenate, or an amorphous coprecipitate containing aluminum and arsenate moieties in proportions such that the aluminum and arsenic are present in an atomic ratio in the range of 5:1 to 1:1. The catalysts are particularly useful for polymerizng ethylene in a Particle Form Process in that the catalysts have essentially no induction period and provide ethylene polymers having a desirably-broad molecular weight distribution and a desirably-high melt flow shear ratio.
