An earth cutting tool can include one or more earth cutting devices. Each earth cutting device can include a plurality of inserts positioned within a body of the cutting device. The inserts can be tapered to correspond to a tapering of pockets defined in the body to facilitate insertion and attachment of the inserts to the body to avoid cracking of the body during brazing and/or heat treatment that may occur after the inserts are positioned in the pockets.

The present invention provides rotatable cutting tools having washers with changing thicknesses. One side of the washer has a tapered surface that increases the thickness of the washer from the inner radius towards the outer radius, resulting in a thicker portion at the outer edge of the washer. The rotatable cutting tool may also have a bit with a tapered surface. The tapered surface of the bit may be structured and arranged to engage with the tapered surface of the washer. The rotatable cutting tool may also include a holder such that the assembled rotatable cutting tool includes the washer between the bit and the holder with the bit inserted into the holder and washer.

A valve seat assembly includes a body having an insert pocket with an axially extending inner surface and a radially extending bottom surface. The valve seat further includes an insert disposed within the insert pocket of the body. The insert includes an axially extending outer surface and a radially extending bottom surface for mating with the axially extending inner surface and a radially extending bottom surface of the insert pocket of the body. The axially extending inner surface of the body is formed with a non-zero reverse taper angle, A, for securing the insert within the insert pocket of the body. The axially extending outer surface of the insert is formed with a reverse taper angle, A, equal to or greater than zero degrees. A valve assembly includes a valve and the valve seat assembly in reciprocating contact with the valve.

A compression milling cutter includes a shank and a front cutting portion that terminates at a leading end of the milling cutter. The front cutting portion has a first circumferential row of one or more insert receiving pockets proximate a leading end of the milling cutter, and a second circumferential row of one or more insert receiving pockets, each insert receiving pocket configured to receive a respective indexable cutting insert. The cutting insert mounted in the first circumferential row has a positive axial rake angle, A, and the indexable cutting insert mounted in an insert pocket of the second circumferential row has a negative axial rake angle, B. Because of the different axial rake angles, chips generated during a machining operation flow in opposite directions, thereby creating a compression zone disposed between the first and second circumferential rows. This compression zone replicates the cutting action of a solid end mill, particularly when machining fiber reinforced plastic materials.

A coolant spray nozzle for use in conjunction with a cutter with a coolant duct wherein the cutter retains a cutting insert with a cutting edge that engages a workpiece at an insert-chip interface having a length. The coolant spray nozzle includes a coolant spray nozzle body containing a bore and an adjustable fan spray nipple having a slot with a slot opening through which coolant discharges in a fan-shaped coolant spray so as to impinge the insert-chip interface along substantially the entire length of the insert-chip interface.

A cutting insert with a serrated topography includes a top surface terminating in a circular cutting edge, a bottom surface and a frusto-conical sidewall interconnecting the top surface and the bottom surface, and a plurality of serrations on the top surface uniformly disposed around the circular cutting edge and extending radially inward from the cutting edge in such a way that a bisector through each serration passes through a central axis of the cutting insert. The plurality of serrations are positioned in a cutting tool in such a way so as to reduce regenerative chatter during a cutting operation. A method of reducing generative chatter by positioning the cutting inserts in a particular fashion in a cutting tool is also disclosed.

A cutting tool includes a body having a forward end and a rearward end. The forward end includes an insert-receiving pocket with a threaded hole having a center axis. The cutting tool further includes a cutting insert with a countersunk bore with a center axis. The cutting tool includes an error proofing feature for preventing the cutting insert to be properly mounted in an insert-receiving pocket when an offset distance between the center axis of the threaded hole of the insert-receiving pocket and the center axis of the countersunk bore of the cutting insert is greater than a predetermined percentage of the outer diameter of the threaded screw.

A hydraulic coupling system includes an adapter, a shell mill, a threaded member, and a chucking membrane. The adapter includes a tapered pilot disposed on and extending from an end face. The shell mill includes a central counter bore for enabling the pilot of the adapter to be inserted therein. The threaded member includes at least one sealing member and is capable of being threaded into a threaded bore of the shell mill. The chucking membrane includes an intermediate portion disposed between two flanges and forms a fluid-tight channel for hydraulic fluid. The chucking member has a tapered inside surface. When the threaded member is threaded into the shell mill, the tapered surfaces of the pilot and the chucking membrane cause an axial force to seat the end face of the shell mill firmly against the end face of the adapter.

A metalcutting insert that is useful in chipforming and material removal from a workpiece. The metalcutting insert includes a metalcutting insert body, which includes a cutting edge having at least one discrete cutting location. The metalcutting insert body further contains a distinct interior coolant passage communicating with the discrete cutting location. The distinct interior coolant passage has a coolant passage inlet defining a coolant passage inlet cross-sectional area, a coolant passage discharge defining a coolant passage discharge cross-sectional area, and an axial coolant passage length. The distinct interior coolant passage defines a coolant flow cross-sectional area along the axial coolant passage length thereof. The metalcutting insert further includes a plurality of surface features for enhancing coolant flow to the cutting edge.

A cutting tool has a cutter body, which carries a cutting insert, and an adapter, which has a longitudinal adapter axis, wherein a locking screw attaches the cutter body to the adapter. A coolant volume is defined in a vicinity of a meeting of the cutter body, the adapter and the locking screw. The adapter contains an axial adapter bore. The locking screw contains a transverse locking screw bore in fluid communication with the axial adapter bore. The locking screw further contains a peripheral transverse locking screw bore passage in fluid communication with the coolant volume and the transverse locking screw bore. The coolant volume and the transverse locking screw bore are in fluid communication with the cutter body coolant passage.

An integral insert clamping mechanism for transferring clamping forces away from the screw hole of the insert to relieve stress at the screw hole by way of protrusions located on the bottom surface of the clamp plate. The clamping mechanism functions by a clamp plate being seated within an indentation on the top surface of the insert and a screw inserted into screw holes of the clamp plate and the insert and then threadably engaged with a threaded bore of a milling cutter. The top surfaces of the screw, the insert and the clamp plate being substantially coplanar. In an alternative embodiment, the clamp plate having a chip breaker.

A rotary cutting tool such as a helical end mill, having pockets arranged to overcome harmonic vibrations. The tool has at least two and in one embodiment all three of three spacing irregularities. In the first irregularity, columns of pockets, typically associated with flutes, are staggered circumferentially out of even spacing. In a preferred embodiment having three flutes, the flutes are mostly not centered on one hundred twenty degree intervals. In the second irregularity, at least some pockets are arranged at different radial rake angles. In the third irregularity, at least some pockets are arranged at different axial rake angles.

A cutting tool includes a tool body having a plurality of insert receiving pockets and at least one cutting insert mounted in each pocket. Each pocket includes a pocket base wall, a side wall and a stress relief groove. The tool body also includes a top surface including a first portion and a second portion, and a stress splitter that extends from the stress relief groove and intersects the first and second portions. The stress splitter may be in the form of a sharp peak or ridge, a radiused peak, rounded mass or protuberance, and the like. The stress splitter reduces a maximum amount of stress in an area of the stress relief groove during a machining operation.
