A system and method perform fine ranging on a plurality of cable modems in a network and distribute results. A CMTS grants access to a full duplex ranging probe to the plurality of cable modems, and probe results are distributed to the plurality of cable modems. A receive modulation error ratio (RxMER) uploaded from respective of the plurality of cable modems, and the CMTS identifies an interference group (IG) and bits/symbol for the plurality of cable moderns in a given sub-band. Full duplex operation is then performed in the given sub-band with known IG and bits/symbol.

Method and apparatuses are disclosed to substantially compensate for various unwanted interferences and/or distortions within a communications receiver. A single carrier cable modem can be initialized on multiple channels. By initializing a cable modern on more than one channel, the error rate performance of short data packets in cable modems in an impulsive noise environment is improved. The advantage of low symbol rate transmission for short packets in an impulse noise environment is achieved without sacrificing burst capacity at a cable modem and without the complexity of transmitting multiple symbol waveforms simultaneously at a cable modem.

Flexible upstream PHY burst profile parameters to improve performance of short bursts in impulse noise

A communication device includes a media access control (MAC) and a physical layer (PHY) processor and supports multi-profile communications with one or more other communication devices. The PHY processor selects a profile based on one or more characteristics of a communication pathway between the device and the one or more other communication devices. A profile may include operational parameters such as modulation coding set (MCS), forward error correction (FEC) and/or error correction code (ECC), a number of bits per symbol per sub-carrier and/or sub-carrier mapping (e.g., such as based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)), cyclic prefix, channel(s) used in transmission, bit-filling and shortening, unicast and/or multicast transmission, and/or other operational parameters. The PHY processor also may be configured to operate within at least two different operational modes including a first mode of packet aggregation and a second mode of bit-filling and shortening.

Simplified multi-modulation coding set (MCS) or multiple profile transmission (MPT) scheme for communications

A communication device receives a transmitted signal from another communication device. This transmitted signal is generated within the another communication device based on predetermined digital data. The communication device then generates a first reference signal based on a copy of the predetermined digital data and subtracts the first reference signal from the transmitted signal to generate a first residual signal. The communication device then identifies at least one adaptation parameter based on the first residual signal and adapts the first reference signal using the at least one adaptation parameter to generate a second reference signal so that a first characteristic of the transmitted signal and a second characteristic of the second reference signal are approximately equal. The communication device then subtracts the second reference signal from the transmitted signal to generate a second residual signal processes the second residual signal to characterize inband spurious emission within the transmitted signal.

Inband spurious detection and processing within communication systems

Embodiments provide solutions to reduce power utilization (either at individual cable modems or in the overall network) in future cable modem networks. Particularly, embodiments seek to reduce power utilization at individual cable modems and in the overall network, by allocating upstream frequency bands and/or transmission modulation schemes among cable modems while accounting for cable loss experienced by individual upstream cable modem transmissions. According to embodiments, frequency spectrum and modulation scheme allocation techniques are provided to optimize power utilization and enable lower upstream transmission power by cable modems while maintaining similar signal strength of received signals or lower signal strength with reduced SNR requirements using lower capacity modulation at the headend.

Frequency spectrum and modulation scheme allocation for high speed data networks

A communication device is configured to perform symbol mapping of bits to generate modulation symbols using one or more modulations. The device may employ a blended modulation composed of bit labels or symbols having different numbers of bits per symbol and different modulations. For example, the device may symbol map bit labels/symbols having first number of bits per symbol to first modulation, and the device may symbol map labels/symbols having second number of bits per symbol to second modulation. The device may be configured to perform forward error correction (FEC) or error correction code (ECC) and coding of information bits to generate coded bits that subsequently undergo symbol mapping. The device may be configured to operate based on different operational modes based on substantially uniform steps of rates, or bits per symbol, and energy per bit or symbol to noise spectral density ratio (E/Nor E/N).

Fine step blended modulation communications

A communication device (e.g., a cable modem (CM)) includes a digital to analog converter (DAC) and a power amplifier (PA) that generate a signal to be transmitting via a communication interface to another communication device (e.g., cable modem termination system (CMTS)). The CM includes diagnostic analyzer that samples the signal based on a fullband sample capture corresponding to a full bandwidth and/or a subset (e.g., narrowband) sample capture to generate a fullband and/or subset signal capture (e.g., of an upstream (US) communication channel between the CM and the CMTS). The diagnostic analyzer can be configured to generate sample captures of the signal based on any desired parameter(s), condition(s), and/or trigger(s). The CM then transmits the signal to the CMTS and the fullband and/or subset signal capture to the CMTS and/or a proactive network maintenance (PNM) communication device to determine at least one characteristic associated with performance of the US communication channel.

Noise localization within cable based communication systems

Many communication systems operate based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signaling and/or orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) signaling. Within such systems, narrowband interference, which may alternatively be referred to as narrowband ingress, narrowband ingress interference, narrowband noise, etc., may adversely affect one or more subcarriers or tones causing a reduction in performance or even link failure. Such narrowband interference may affect only one or a relatively few tones employed within such communications. When the narrowband interference is identified, a transmission may then be made including one or more information-free tones. A device that receives such a transmission then uses those information-free tones to reduce or cancel the narrowband interference. Such processing may be performed in the frequency-domain, the time domain, or both.

Interference cancellation within OFDM communications

A method and apparatus is disclosed to determine communications receiver parameters from multiple channels of a received communications signal and to configure and/or adjust communications receiver parameters to acquire one or more channels from among the multiple channels of the received communications signal. A communications receiver observes a multi-channel communication signal as it passes through a communication channel. The communications receiver determines one or more communications receiver parameters from the multiple channels of the received communications signal. The communications receiver configures and/or adjusts communications receiver parameters to acquire the one or more channels from among the multiple channels of the received communications signal.

Communication receiver enhancements using multi-signal capture

A transmitter's operation is characterized using components having relatively low cost and low complexity. A device includes comparator(s) that compare a transmitter's analog output to predetermined level(s) to generate count(s) associated with analog output range bin(s). Each of the predetermined levels is associated with a corresponding one of the analog output range bins. A transfer function of the transmitter is generated using the comparison count values associated with the analog output range bin(s). A histogram may be generated from the comparison count values associated with the various analog output range bins. An equalizer is implemented to process data that will be transmitted by the transmitter. The equalizer uses equalizer parameter(s) that are selected based on the characterization of the transmitter (e.g., its transfer function, its histogram, etc.). The equalizer may use default or start up parameters until the transmitter's operation is characterized.

Broadband amplifier linearization using captured histogram data

An outer encoder encodes input data signal to generate a first encoded signal. An inner encoder encodes a subset of the input data to generate a second encoded signal, wherein the inner encoder has a different forward error correction (FEC) than the outer encoder. A symbol mapper processes the first encoded signal and the second encoded signal to generate a sequence of discrete-valued modulation symbols.

Memory depth optimization in communications systems with ensemble PHY layer requirements. Memory depth, for one or more modules in a communication device, is managed based on a limited amount of provisioned hardware. For example, each of a number of various modules within a communication device is configurable to operate at various memory depths. Considered together, various sets or profiles of operational parameters (e.g., associated with particular settings for each of the various modules within the communication device), may be employed to configure the communication device to operate in accordance with one of a variety of operational modes. For example, in a first operational mode, latency may be minimized (e.g., using shorted codewords, shorter interleaver depth, etc.), whereas in a second operational mode, a higher latency may be tolerated but with an expectation of much lower error rates (e.g., achieved using more powerful ECC, longer interleaver depth, etc.).
