A single-use puncture device having an escapement assembly, a cylindrical sidewall and a helical spring encircling a lance. The escapement assembly includes cantilevered catch members which abut a stop turn of the helical spring to hold the helical spring in a stressed condition. Pressure at the front end of the puncture device causes a deformation of a thin diaphragm which supports the cantilevered catch members at ends opposite the abutment to the stop turn. The deformation is a flexing which moves the catch members radially outwardly to release the stop turn. The spring thrusts the lance forwardly from an armed position to a propelled position in which the puncture point of the lance extends from the front end of the device. The helical spring thereafter recoils to locate the lance in a neutral position encased within a housing. Rearmament of the device is thereby prevented. The front end of the puncture device includes the central access aperture, a skin-engagement region outward of the access aperture, a raised annulus which defines the skin-engagement region, and the thin flexible diaphragm.

Single-use skin puncture device

A shower head volume meter producing an audible or other alarm for indicating when a predetermined volume of water has been delivered. A polite alarm or 'beep' is used after a first volume of water y has been delivered, while an aggressive alarm in the form of a continuous sound is used after a second volume of water y+z has been delivered. A first embodiment measures the volume of water with a magnetic turbine and pick-up coil. The turbine rotates in response to water flow through meter generating a rotating magnetic flux. The flux lines cut across the pick-up coil which produces electrical pulse signals at a rate corresponding to the water flow rate. The number of magnetic poles in the turbine determines the total volume of water that can be delivered. A microcontroller analyzes the pulse signals and initiates the alarm. The pick-up coil doubles as an alternator to produce electrical power for the microcontroller. A second embodiment measures the volume of water using the pressure difference caused by the venturi effect. A piezoresistive die produces a voltage corresponding to the water flow rate. The meter can be a separate screw or adapter or an integral part of the shower head.

Shower head volume meter with alarm signal

A tonometer for measuring the intraocular pressure of an eye featuring an acoustic signaling system for determining the beginning of a pressure measurement. The acoustic system includes a consumable cap having a pair of annular raised surface portions spaced by a recessed area. The raised surface portions provide an eye-engaging surface at the face of the tonometer. A pressure transmitting plunger concentrically suspended between the raised surface portions by a plurality of spider arms combines with the eye-engaging surface to provide a contour which complements a shape of an eye. The recessed area is open along the eye-engaging surface, yet defines a generally enclosed volume when full tonometer-to-eye contact is made. Spaced apart inlet and outlet apertures within the recessed area permit channeling of an acoustic signal to and from the recessed area. Prior to proper coupling of the tonometer to an eye, a substantial amount of the energy of the acoustic signal is lost to free air. However, upon achieving full tonometer-to-eye contact the energy is captured within the recessed ara and channeled to an acoustic receiver when the plunger contacts the eye, constricting the inlet-to-outlet acoustic wave path. Characteristic change of the received signal is marked by a hold signal triggered to initiate an intraocular pressure measurement. Proper coupling may be detected by either monitoring the phase or the change in amplitude at the acoustic wave receiver. Intraocular pressure is measured by means of the plunger which is operatively coupled to a force transducer.

A photoluminescent system to determine the kind and amount of photoluminescent-labelled sample, such as derived from biological fluid, in which the labelled sample is coated onto a surface of an elongate carrier member. Such member is inserted into a quiescent light-tight enclosure at which the exposed side is impinged upon by illumination radiation and the radiation emitted therefrom is collected from the same exposed side.
