An improved monolithic hydrogenation catalyst and processes for using same to hydrogenate animal and vegetable oils, said catalyst being comprised of a Raney metal alloy surface layer integral with and derived from a selected nickel alloy monolithic substrate mesh structure wherein said surface layer is predominantly derived from an adherent Beta structured crystalline precursor outer portion thereon. The catalyst is adaptable to both continuous and batch hydrogenation and shows enhanced activity, improved triene to diene selectivity and a low isomerization index. Hydrogenated oils show lower linolenic and stearic contents, lower trans-isomer percentages and lower melting points as compared to commercial products of equivalent iodine number.

Hydrogenation of long chain olefinic oils with Raney catalyst

An improved cathode with a conductive metal core and a Raney-type catalytic surface predominantly derived from an adherent Beta nickel (NiAl.sub.3) crystalline precursory outer portion of the metal core is disclosed. The precursory outer portion preferably has molybdenum added to give a precursor alloy having the formula Ni.sub.x Mo.sub.1-x Al.sub.3 where x is within the range of from about 80 to about 95 weight percent. Also disclosed is a method of producing a low overvoltage cathode. The method includes the steps of taking a Ni-Mo core or substrate having about 5-20 weight percentage of Mo and coating it with aluminum then heat treating to form a Ni-Mo-Al alloy with mostly a Beta nickel structure and then leaching out the Al to produce a Raney surface.

Raney alloy coated cathode for chlor-alkali cells

Hydrogenation processes utilizing improved Raney nickel alloy catalysts are disclosed. The catalyst comprises a monolithic mesh type structure of a nickel alloy having an integral Beta phase Raney Ni.sub.x M.sub.1-x coating on its outer surfaces, where M is a catalytic activator selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, ruthenium, tantalum and titanium and where x, the weight fraction of nickel in the combined alloy, is between about 0.80 and about 0.95. The catalyst is effective in processes for hydrogenation of aromatic compounds of the type ##STR1## wherein K is either benzene or naphthalene, R.sub.1 is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic chain containing from about 1 to about 9 carbon atoms or a phenyl radical, R.sub.2 is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic chain containing from about 1 to about 3 carbon atoms, and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are hydrogen atoms, hydroxy, or nitro groups. When this catalyst is used, substantially higher reactant flow rates and lower operating temperatures are possible as compared to conventional fluidized bed granular catalysts.

Raney nickel alloy expanded mesh hydrogenation catalysts

Hydrogenation processes utilizing improved Raney nickel alloy catalysts are disclosed. The catalyst comprises a monolithic mesh type structure of a nickel alloy having an integral Beta phase Raney Ni.sub.x M.sub.1-x coating on its outer surfaces, where M is a catalytic activator selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, ruthenium, tantalum and titanium and where x, the weight fraction of nickel in the combined alloy, is between about 0.80 and about 0.95. The catalyst is effective in processes for hydrogenating an amine-substituted aromatic compound of the type ##STR1## wherein K is either benzene or naphthalene, R.sub.1 is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic chain containing from about 1 to about 12 carbon atoms or a phenyl radical, R.sub.2 is a hydrogen atom, an amine group or an aliphatic chain containing from about 1 to about 3 carbon atoms, R.sub.3 is hydrogen or an amine group, and R.sub.4 is an amine group. When this catalyst is used, substantially higher reactant flow rates and lower operating temperatures are possible as compared to conventional fluidized bed granular catalysts.

Raney nickel catalysis of aromatic amines

A methanation reactor utilizing an improved catalyst for the conversion of CO, CO.sub.2 and mixtures thereof to CH.sub.4 is disclosed. The catalyst comprises a monolithic mesh type structure of a nickel alloy having an integral Beta phase Raney coating on its outer surfaces. When used, substantially higher reactant flow rates and lower operating temperatures are possible as compared to conventional fluidized bed granular catalysts.

Reactor containing a methanation catalyst

An electrolytic cell having an improved hydrogen evolution cathode, said cathode being characterized by a conductive metal core and an integral Raney-type catalytic surface predominantly derived from an adherent ternary aluminide Beta structured intermetallic crystalline precursory outer portion of the metal core is disclosed. The precursory outer portion preferably has molybdenum and titanium added to give a precursor alloy having the formula Ni.sub.x Mo.sub.y Ti.sub.z Al.sub.3 where x is within the range of from about 75 to about 94 weight percent, y is within the range of from about 5 to about 20 weight percent and z is within the range of from about 1 to about 5 weight percent of the Ni-Mo-Ti portion of the alloy. Also disclosed is a method of producing a low overvoltage cathode. The method includes the steps of taking a Ni-Mo-Ti core or substrate having about 5-20 weight percentage of Mo and about 1-5 weight percent Ti and coating it with aluminum, heat treating to form a Ni-Mo-Ti-Al quaternary alloy with mostly NiAl.sub.3 (ordered orthorhombic) crystal structure and then leaching out the Al to produce a ternary NiMoTi alloy Raney surface. A method for utilizing said low overvoltage cathode for producing hydrogen and an exemplary cell having a permselective membrane therein for so doing are also disclosed.

Electrolytic cell with improved hydrogen evolution cathode

An improved cathode with a conductive metal core and a Raney-type catalytic surface predominantly derived from an adherent Beta (NiAl.sub.3) crystalline precursory outer portion of the metal core is disclosed. Further, the precursory outer portion preferably has ruthenium added to give a precursor alloy having the formula (Ni-Ru)Al.sub.3 where the ruthenium content of the nickel-ruthenium portion is within the range of from about 5 to about 15 weight percent. Also disclosed is a method of producing a low overvoltage cathode. The method includes the steps of taking a Ni-Ru alloy core or substrate and coating it with aluminum, then heat treating to form a Ni-Ru-Al ternary alloy with mostly a Beta structure and then leaching out the Al to produce a Raney surface.

Hydrogen evolution cathode

A methanation process utilizing an improved catalyst for the conversion of CO, CO.sub.2 and mixtures thereof to CH.sub.4 is disclosed. A method for utilizing said low overvoltage cathode for producing hydrogen and an exemplary cell for so doing are also disclosed.

An improved cathode with a conductive metal core and a Raney nickel type catalytic surface predominantly derived from an adherent Beta (NiAl.sub.3) crystalline precursory outer portion of the metal core is disclosed. The precursory outer portion contains nickel, tantalum, and aluminum to give a precursor alloy having the formula (NiTa)Al.sub.3 where the tantalum content of the nickel-tantalum portion is in the range of from about 5 to about 25 weight percent. Also disclosed is a method of producing a low overvoltage cathode which includes the steps of coating a nickel-tantalum core or substrate having from about 5 to about 25 percent by weight of tantalum with molten aluminum and heat treating the coated substrate to form a (NiTa)Al.sub.3 ternary alloy with predominantly a Beta crystal structure on the outer portion. An alkali metal hydroxide is used to leach out aluminum and produce a porous binary Raney Ni-Ta alloy surface. The resulting porous binary alloy-coated substrate is useful as a cathode in electrolytic cells, particularly in membrane cells utilized to produce chlorine and caustic from brine.
