Methods and apparatus are disclosed for near field radio-frequency (RF) testing of devices, particularly user equipment (UEs) capable of millimeter-wave (mmWave) transmissions. An exemplary test apparatus is described that uses a transducer to facilitate near field over-the-air testing of UEs in the mmWave transmission band. The transducer may be an orthomode transducer and may include a dual-polarity port positioned in the reactive near field of an antenna of a device under test (DUT). For UE signal transmission tests, the orthomode transducer splits test signals received from the antenna of the DUT via the dual-polarity port into a pair of single-polarity RF signals. The single-polarity RF signals are separately fed through a pair of waveguide-to-coaxial adaptors into separate coaxial cables, which feed coaxial transmission versions of the single-polarity RF signals to test equipment for analysis. UE signal reception tests are also described that utilize the same or different orthomode transducer.

Near field wireless communication device testing using dual-polarity transducer

The invention is a CDMA transmission control technology that includes various combinations of the following functionality: decresting, in-band to out-of-band ratio (RIO), power control, and spectral shaping. Decresting reduces peaks in the CDMA signal. RIO generates a ratio based on the signal strength of in-band versus out-of-band portions of the CDMA signal. Power control adjusts the gain of the CDMA signal based on quadrature signal calculations. Spectral shaping attenuates in-band portions of the CDMA signal adjacent to the corner frequencies. The CDMA transmission control technology can be implemented in a CDMA base station to extend range and capacity.

CDMA signal transmission control

The invention is a CDMA spectral shaping technology that attenuates the out-of-band signal power in the CDMA signal. The in-band CDMA signal is attenuated near the corner frequencies to reduce components that provide a disproportionate contribution to the out-of-band signal power. The power amplifier in the CDMA base station can then operate at higher power levels without exceeding out-of-band signal power limitations. As a result, the power amplifier operates more efficiently and extends the range or capacity of the base station. In some examples of the invention, spectral shaping digital filters are placed between the cell site modem and the digital-to-analog converter in the base station. In other examples of the invention, spectral shaping analog filters are placed between the digital-to-analog converter and the low-pass filter in the base station.

Spectral shaping a CDMA signal

An antenna adapter for interfacing a portable radiotelephone with external equipment. In a preferred embodiment, a connector assembly includes a first connector portion that inserts directly into the radiotelephone's antenna port, replacing the normal antenna assembly. Matching electrical components on a circuit board are used to match the impedance of the antenna port of the portable radiotelephone. A second connector portion typically uses conventional RF connectors to couple the radiotelephone antenna port to external equipment.

Antenna adapter

A novel and improved antenna adapter for interfacing a portable radiotelephone 200 with test equipment is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the adapter assembly comprises an RF connector 104 at one end of an elongated conductor 102 which connects directly to the radiotelephone's 200 antenna port, replacing the normal antenna assembly. The elongated conductor 102 makes electrical contact with an external ground 204 of the battery charging ports at the bottom of the radiotelephone 200 at another end. The RF connector 104 may be impedance-matched to minimize RF signal attenuation when connected to the RF test equipment. In an exemplary embodiment, the RF connector 104 comprises a 50.OMEGA. impedance-matched SMA connector.
