A photochromic composition for making optical materials comprising a polyurethane prepolymer formed by combining an isocyanate and a compound having an active hydrogen containing group, a polysilsequioxane and a photochromic compound. The photochromic composition may also include a monomer that has both an active hydrogen containing group and an unsaturated group. The polysilsesquioxane is incorporated as a copolymer and/or as a polysilsequioxane-chemically modified polyurethane.

Polyurethane-based photochromic optical materials

Photochromic matrix compositions and tie layer compositions useful for the preparation of photochromic polycarbonate lenses are disclosed. The tie layer compositions facilitate adhesion of the photochromic matrix composition to the polycarbonate lens. The photochromic matrix compositions can contain a flexible hydrophilic dimethacrylate monomer, one or more hydrophobic monomers, a flexible hydrophobic multi(meth)acrylate monomer, one or more urethane methacrylate oligomers, and one or more photochromic dyes. The tie layer compositions can contain one or more methacrylate monomers, a (meth)acrylated oligomer with a polycarbonate backbone, one or more urethane methacrylate oligomers, and a solvent or solvent mixture. Methods of preparing photochromic polycarbonate lenses are also disclosed, involving the serial application of the tie layer composition, then the photochromic matrix composition to the lens.

Compositions for the preparation of composite photochromic polycarbonate lenses

A scratch-resistant coating comprising a polymer including a functionalized polysilsesquioxane. The scratch-resistant coating is exposed to oxidizing conditions (e.g., ozone or ultraviolet light) that modify the surface chemistry of the coating to enhance adhesion to inorganic thin film coatings, such as antireflective coatings.

Compositions and methods for the preparation of composite photochromic polycarbonate lenses

A method of manufacturing a composite photochromic ophthalmic lens having an index of refraction of at least 1.49 is disclosed. The method comprises providing against a front portion of a mold, a first ophthalmic lens-forming composition including a polymerizable monomer, oligomer, or polymer and a photochromic compound; filling a rear portion of the mold with a second ophthalmic lens-forming composition, sufficiently different from the first ophthalmic lens-forming composition such that a distinct phase boundary results between the two compositions after complete curing of the two compositions, the second ophthalmic lens-forming composition including a polymerizable monomer, oligomer or polymer that is different from the monomer, oligomer or polymer of the first ophthalmic lens-forming composition, such that the second ophthalmic lens-forming composition is in contact with the first lens-forming composition, wherein either the first or second ophthalmic lens-forming composition is gelled before adding the other ophthalmic lens-forming composition, in an ungelled state, to the mold; and curing the first and second ophthalmic lens-forming compositions simultaneously, while the first and second ophthalmic lens-forming compositions are in intimate contact.

Methods for preparing composite photochromic ophthalmic lenses

Photochromic compositions are disclosed herein. The compositions comprise mixtures of methacrylate monomers, which when polymerized, provide a polymer matrix that exhibits improved fading characteristics of incorporated photochromic dyes and good photochromic temperature stability. The compositions are particularly useful as a composite layer on polymer-based ophthalmic lenses.

Photochromic matrix compositions for use in ophthalmic lenses

Unsaturated polyester resin-based ophthalmic lens compositions that are modified for unexpected improvement in speed of manufacture while maintaining uniform, low optical distortion and/or improved tint speed by the addition to the polyester composition of at least one photoinitiator, preferably having at least some activity at a wavelength above about 380 nm so that a UV-absorbing compound can be included in the polyester lens composition, and the polyester resin composition is photocured to gelation in about 7 minutes or less, e.g., using a light intensity of at least about 300 microwatts/cm.sup.2, more preferably at least about 500 microwatts/cm.sup.2, most preferably at least about 1,000 microwatts/cm.sup.2.

Production of photopolymerized polyester high index ophthalmic lenses

Unsaturated polyester resin-based compositions that are modified for unexpected improvement in uniform, low optical distortion and/or improved tint speed by the addition of one or more additives selected from an allylic ester and/or an acrylic monomer, together with an exotherm depressant, making the modified polyester resin-based composition commercially viable for casting ophthalmic lenses. The additive(s) and exotherm depressant are useful to modify the polyester for sufficient enhancement of optical distortion and/or tint speed such that any unsaturated polyester resin, capable of producing a clear, low color casting, will be improved sufficiently to provide a composition having the required properties for an ophthalmic lens.
